That's how I fit. I have tried over the years to locate anybody with knowledge of Barney McGookey ( Mary Olive's first husband) and he appeared out of thin air as far as I can tell. Even with soundex I cannot match McGookey to any Irish name I can find. Then I got to Frank Fenton O'Rork and behind him was Mary McGee and Matthew O'Rork. I surmised from the dates that Matthew had died at sea and I figured on a buriel at sea. What I could find also said Ontario (ON) so I assumed they came into Canada. I also have read that during the famine "miscellaneous" persons of Irish descent fled the country and I figure they were part of that and no records were kept. I sure would like to nail them down but I think you're right, it's a needle in a haystack. You would think that we could come up with some clue as to where they came from by ship manifest but I haven't found one yet. If we suppose that Keating came into the country with her and perhaps knew her from home, can we track his arrival here???? By the way, ancestry.com has it wrong. Mary Olive was married to Barney McGookey first and had 10 kids, then when he died she married Arthur Anderson. Ancestry.com shows her married to Anderson McGookey........ Where do the McCartney's fit in this?

    2. Last week someone on one of the lists did suggest writing emails to aol...I have sent at least one each day from my 7 screen names to aol feedback for about 10 days. Many have been doing the same -- flooding aol's mailbox with requests to get our mail. All I got was form letters telling me to contact Rootsweb and tell them how to get the mail delivered -- I ignored that suggestion. Today is the first day I have received at least some mail. I have been checking the archives to see what I missed. I am glad to be back and hope it will be permanent. I was happy to see the lists arriving in my mailbox. Sharon in So. California

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: O'Rork, Keating, McCartney Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/1VB.2ACE/11430.1.2.1 Message Board Post: As far as I know, no one had found anything that would confirm when the O'Rorks arrived in the US. Frank O'Rork (son of Mary McGee and Matthew) provides a variety of dates in his Civil War pension papers, 1840 and 1842 being the most common. I recently confirmed that Frank's older brother Thomas was living in Cincinnati in 1921. I want to try to track him down to see if I can find anything there. The story is that Matthew O'Rork died on board the ship and was buried at sea. Mary either met Bernard Keating on the ship or, there is speculation that they came from the same town in Ireland. In any case they married and had their first child, Mary, by 1852 and can be found in the 1860 Ohio census for Erie county. Bernard died before 1870. I have not been able to locate either Bernard or Mary in any records before 1860 but Frank's pension papers indicate that the family was living near Sandusky Ohio by the time he was 5. I talked to a professional genealogist who specializes in Ireland and was told that unless we at least knew the county in Ireland, preferrably the parish, it would be next to impossible to find the family there. Are you also researching McCartney? That family is connected to the O'Rorks in several generations. How are you connected? Keep in touch Ann

Friends may call this evening at the fuenral home after 7 o'clock. Former residents of Berlin Heights, the Austin family moved to a home on Patten Tract Road just north of the Erie County line near North Monroeville about seven years ago. The mother was a member of the North Monroeville Congregational Church while the daughter was in the Girl Scouts. The children attended school at Monroeville. It was learned today that the surviving son, Eugene 15, had attended the Erie County Junior Fair here and reported he was too tired to join the other memebers of his family for the fishing trip on Saturday. The father, Mayhew, 40, swam to a range light after the 17-foot speedboat was swamped during the wind and electrical storm. 3. Shelly, you asked...snip>looking for an obituary or news story for Hazel Ellen Austin and children Cynthia and Robert. Death date for all three is August 18th 1956 in Vermilion Twp. >snip Here is the first of two articles. Sandusky Star-News Aug 20, 1956 page 1 col 5: SEEK BODIES OF MOTHER, 2 CHILDREN - Mayhew Austin, 40, survives tragedy on Bay during storm. BULLETIN ~ Sandusky firemen recovered the body of Cynthia Austin, 14, from Sandusky Bay off the Hinde & Dauch dock, foot of Jackson St, early Monday afternoon. Charles Chamberlain, 521 Pearl St notified police that he saw the body off the municipal dock. Identification was made by the girl's father, Mayhew Austin. Austin, his son, Eugene and a brother, Mark Austin, Vincennes, Indiana had been on a Coast Guard boat searching for the bodies. The body was removed to the Charles J Andres Sons' Funeral Home and will be taken to the Hinman Funeral Home at Berlin Heights. Only the father and a 15 year old son of a rural North Monroeville family of five survived today following a Sandusky Bay Tragedy during the Saturday afternoon storm. Mayhew Austin, 40, was discharged from Providence Hospital Monday following severe shock after he was rescued from a range light which he succeeded in reaching after his 17 foot speedboat, "Tonda" was swamped during the storm. One son, Eugene, 15, remained at home Saturday while the other members of the family went on the boat trip. Drowned in Sandusky Bay are: Mrs Hazel Austin, 31, wife of Mayhew; Cynthia Austin, 14, and Robert Austin, 12. Members of the Cedar Point Coast Guard continued dragging operations Monday after obtaining more definite information from Austin as to where the capsizing of the boat occurred. Until today it was impossible to question the man, an employee of Apex Electric Mfg Co Sandusky, because of severe shock. The Coast Guard quoted Austin as saying that the party was near Johnson's Island when the storm appeared headed this way. They failed to don life jackets and headed for the Lower Lake Coal loading docks. While enroute the boat caught by the brunt of the storm, upset and all were thrown into the water. Austin told the Coast Guard that he found one of the children's jackets floating and hung on to it and which probably saved his life. He said the wind hit and the boat was swamped. The Coast Guard stressed the fact that had the family donned life jackets there is a possibility all might have been saved since the station immediately sent out a patrol throughout the Sandusky Bay area. The boat sank. According to Patrolman Harry Vail of the Sandusky police department, Austin is reported to have swam approximately one half hour and clung to the first range light in the bay from the coal laoding docks. L G Warner and A W McLeod of the Cedar Point Coast Guard removed Austin from the range light and brought him to Sandusky where he was taken to Providence Hospital by Frey ambulance. The Austin family lived on Patten Tract Road north of North Monroeville. Sandusky police received the call from the Coast Guard at 6:06pm Saturday to meet the boat bringing Austin to the mainland. -- Erie County Chapter,OGS. Dues $10 per year.
