    1. [OHDARKE] Bigler Family
    2. Below is a transcript of a page that I copied out of a Darke County history. I apologize that I do not have the exact citation for this, I will continue to search these piles of paper for it. I have no interest in this family but in another family also on this page. This is on page 145 and I regret that it is incomplete as I did not copy page 146. Perhaps this will give someone a place to start. Sandy The first BIGLERs in Darke County were David and Nancy (GRABLE) BIGLER who settled on a 197-acre farm along Harris Creek about one-fourth mile east of the present Oakland Church of the Brethren in Adams Twp., in 1831. They with their twelve children came by horse and wagon across the mountains from West Bethlehem Twp., Washington Co., Penn., where they and their parents were members of the Ten Mile Church of the Brethren (attending services there in the small brick building perched on a hill top that is still in use by the Brethren congregation). The BIGLER family originated in the highlands east of Berne, Switzerland, where many BIGLERs are living today. The BIGLER name appears in official property records of the Canton of Berne as early as 1389, with the same spelling of the name as in Ohio today. The ancestor of the Ohio BIGLERs, Marcus or Mark, BIGLER, arrived at Philadelphia, with other German speaking immigrants known as "Palatimes," in 1733. He settled eventually on a 259-acre farm east of Frederick, Md., in what is now Carrol Co., Md., which he called "Mark's Delight," where he died in 1787. He had three sons and a number of daughters. The sons were Mark Jr., who settled near Roanoke, Va., ancestor of the Presbyterian BIGLERs in Virginia; Jacob, who settled near Shinnston, W. Va., a soldier in the Revolution and ancestor of the Mormon BIGLERs of Utah, including two Presidents of the Mormon Church; and Israel, who settled in Washington Co., father of David Bigler of Darke Co., Ohio. David (1787-1844) and Nancy (1793-1858) BIGLER lived on their farm along Harris Creek and are buried in unmarked graves on that farm. Seven of their children, after marrying in Darke County, moved to Church of Brethren settlements in the general area of Goshen and Elkhart, Indiana. These were: Andrew, who married Lydia RARICK; Rachel, who married David C. MILLER; Daniel, who married Catharine MIKESELL; Amos, who married Catharine MAURER; Phoebe, who married Michael MILLER; Delila, who married Levi MILLER; and Nicodemus, who married Hannah HERSHEY - they being the parents of the prominent school teacher in Darke County, Charles H. BIGLER, Major Epaminondas BIGLER, and Dr. Lewis BIGLER of Gettysburg. Five children of David and Nancy BIGLER remained in or near Darke County, namely: Moses; Barbara, who married John MARTIN; Julia Ann, who married Henry MAURER; Nancy, who married Andrew Deeter; and Lydia, who married Joseph FAHNESTOCK. Moses BIGLER (1818-1874) married Mary MILLER (1825-1908), daughter of Jacob MILLER, early pioneer in Adams Twp. and one-time owner of the Webster gristmill. Moses and Mary lived on a farm in northern Adams Twp. where their five children were born. Those were: Cyrus (1844-1928), Jacob (1848-1917) who
