Isn't Darke County, Ohio near Goshen, Geneva, Berne, Indiana, on the border? Is the county also a Mennonite / Annabaptist area for Germans, Swiss and others? I received the above from someone when referencing my father's surname and that a cluster of Gigandet had gone from Belfort, FR to Darke County. Can anyone tell me whether the above is true or accurate? It would be interesting for me to know. Unfortunately I have not been able to validate my family connection to Darke Cty as I am unable to get family date past my grandfather, but do believe that there is some connection. My family is from Vendlincourt, Switz. which is only 19 miles from Belfort. However, I am interested in any background for when I am able to make a connection. Thank you very much. Claire
Claire, Geneva and Berne are located in Adams County, Indiana, just inside the Indiana-Ohio state line. Geneva and Berne are about 40 miles north/northwest of Greenville, Ohio ( the county seat of Darke County ). Goshen is located in Elkhart County, Indiana, in the very northern part of the state ( almost to the Michigan border ). Goshen is about 130 miles northwest of Greenville, Ohio. Someone else on the DCO List will have to help you with your other question about the Mennonite and Anabaptist settlers in Darke County. My Darke County ancestors were Methodist and EUB. Sharon Butsch Freeland Superior, Boulder County, Colorado .
For more information about Anabaptists in Darke Co, check out the archives of the BRETHREN-L@rootsweb.com for the surnames. Or join and ask questions. There were one or two German Baptist congregations in Darke Co, don't know about Mennonite. Often German-speaking settlers searched out an existing church that was German-speaking. There was a lot of movement between the Anabaptist groups. Claire, I just read Sharon's reply, and I wanted to get an oar in the water---- Although a very short oar. Greenville, Darke County, had a very strong element of Brethren, I believe, and they still have the Brethren Home as an assisted living arrangement. I think that Anabaptist = Brethren, but I might be wrong. At my mother's burial in 1988 in Greenville, several people came, still dressing in Brethren clothing (for lack of a better word). My mother taught in a country school and one of her pupils was a gentleman named Norman Burns who became, among other things, the president of the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Upon his return to this country in the '70's he was writing a book on the Brethren of Darke county. I have no information further on him, sadly. My main reason in writing, is not that you won't get better info from the DCo group directly. But if you get info off the list, could you let me know. I'd love to know more about the folks there. Go to cobnet.org for more information about Anabaptist groups, including the Brethren, of which there are several groups with differing practices and beliefs.
