    1. [OHDARKE] Save Civil War Resting Place!

    3. Hello, everyone. I know what I'm going to post here has nothing to do with Darke Co., OH, but it's close enough and it could be happening to us, as well. It breaks my heart! Please help to stop this! Go to this link and sign the petition: http://www.petitiononline.com/faybat04/petition.html Paramount Development Corp. has approached the City of Fayetteville, WV and asked that they re-zone a 60-acre farm on the edge of town for commercial use. Paramount Development intends to build 2 large buildings that Wal-Mart and Lowes will occupy as well as several smaller out parcels. The 60-acre tract of land however is what is known as the Fleshman/Clark farm, it was the site of the Sept 10, 1862 Battle of Fayetteville. The site also contains a battlefield cemetery, which contains the graves of at least 24 American soldiers. This property is in imminent danger of being developed, which would mean this hallowed ground would be lost forever. We are asking that the City of Fayetteville deny the request by Paramount Development Corp. to rezone the property and help to preserve Americas ever shrinking battlefield land, as well as, preserve and protect the hallowed ground. We owe it to ourselves and to our ancestors to protect this land that they fought and died for, this honored field where the dead from the battle rest in their graves. Thank you! ===== ~*~*~*~*~*~*~ Surnames I'm researching ~*~*~*~*~*~*~ ALLEN*BARGER*BALDWIN*BECK*BLOCHER*BOLLINGER*BOOMERSHINE*BRODBECK*CATE*CHENOWETH*COLLINS*CONRAD*COX*CRAUMER/CROMER*CRUTCHFIELD*DIXON*GEARHART*GREER*HADLEY*HARRIS*HARTER*KERR*LAMB*MCPHERSON*MOON*PASSMORE*REINHEIMER*ROSER*RUSH*SHIRES*SPARKS*STATLER*STEWART/STUART*STOUT*SWARTSEL*TEAFORD*THOMPSON*WEGANNAST*WISE*WORKMAN

    3. Here is a place closer to home that already lost part of the battle to preserve our history. Johnson's Island is a tiny island in Lake Erie just off the shore from Sandusky, OH. A local contractor wanted to blast out one side of the island to form a channel and marina inland, where he wanted to build expensive condos and houses. The people of Johnson's Island fought but the man won and blasted away part of the prison grounds. I walked the area where this prison stood - it's beautiful, wild and haunting. Then I walked the cemetery and was so touched that I kept returning and even wrote a poem about it. Will the cemetery be next I wonder. A Google search for Johnson's Island turned up numerous sites on the place - below are two. The places really need to be protected. "The Confederate Cemetery on Johnson's Island (the only area publicly owned) contains 206 tombstones commemorating the over 300 prisoners that died while imprisoned here." http://www.heidelberg.edu/~dbush/Personal%20Web%20Page.htm History and layout: http://www.fred.net/stevent/JOHNSONS_ISLAND/Jisland.html Shirley Pearson ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Statler To: OHDARKE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 3:58 PM Subject: [OHDARKE] Save Civil War Resting Place!
