Surnames: Smith, Overly, Kimble Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/0VB.2ACE/226.1.2.1 Message Board Post: Judy, Smith's are such a hard name to be searching for. If you read through my post describing my lineage, there is indeed a Joseph Smith. This is of course a different Joseph because he was born later and I have been able to trace him to Michigan with one of his son's at age 70 (1930).... I am responding because while searching for my Smith's I have noticed that this family did tend to use "family names" over and over. At the time, this was not all that unusal. The Smith's in Darke County seemed to do this. Sharon Williams is working on all the Smith's in this county. I have not talked to her in a while. She senttme the information that she had on the Smith's at the time and we were not able to place my Smith's in her information for sure but I suspect that we just haven't found the right document yet. I sent her an email recently to see how she was doing but did not hear back from her. I'll have to send her and email again...Anyway.. I know that my Smith's came from Darke County from Civil War records for James W Smiht which clearly states that he was born in Darke County, Ohio.. I am wonder if your Joesph is a younger brother to my James. Do you see the name Kisiah repeated in your family anywhere? I have it in mine and there was a Kisiah Smith born in Darke County too in the same generation as my James. I have no proof of a connection between James and the first Kisiah but I have a strong suspicion. James and his wife,Susannah, named their children using all the common names....John, Joseph, James, Charles, Mary Ann...etc (check my posting for the whole list). I have been watching these family names including Joseph... repeat themselves. All these same names show up up in Darke County in the early Ohio Census records. In my mind all of whom are potential parents to James...and his siblings...if we could just get them identified. The unusal name of Kisiah popped out to me when I noticed the name in! my family and then again in Darke County. I will keep an eye open and if I see anything I'll let you know. Please do the same. I will add you to my addres book if you don't mind as a Smith Researcher from Darke County Thanks, Jan Smith

If interested, let me know at gnepat@interaxs.net Pat Johnson Family Bible. Very large, leather, well-preserved bible. The inscription reads: To Vandalena Wagner by Benjamin Wagner, Dec. 25, 1881. There are no b,m, death records in it, but there is correspondence dated 1977 to Mrs. Geo. W. Bowman of Greenville from Mrs.Long of Alhambra, CA which contains some family info. It also records the death of Vandie Wagner in 1892, aged 44. ************************************************************** This message was scanned by the Avast Anti-Virus Gateway **************************************************************
I am seeking any information about Samuel Hays and his wife Elizabeth (Martin) Hays and their children. Samuel and Elizabeth moved to Darke county around 1840 and left around 1850. All of their 6 children were born in Darke County. Around 1850 they left for either Michigan or Illinois. They appear on the 1860 census for Illinois. Elizabeth died either in Darke County or Michigan. Any information will be appreciated.
There is NO Roll CAll on this list at this time. The DCO list, where many of you are also subscribed, IS having a Roll Call now. Please wait until that is over to start one here. Hi, Looking for info on Peter STUDER who married Catherine BARGA. Catherine was the oldest child of John BARGA and Adelle PEQUINOT. Thanks, Anita
I'm looking for any information on the Buchanan family of Greenville, Darke Co. This family begins with James Buchanan who is on the 1820 census for the county near my proven great great grandfather James Stephenson and his wife Ann Porter Stephenson. I descend from Eliza Buchanan who married James Stephenson's son Josiah in 1823, Darke Co. Ohio. I believe she was the daughter, possibly the niece of James Buchanan, but have had trouble getting any Buchanan information that could be validated. Other families related in some way to this one: Steele, Moffott, Stahl, Robbins, Porter, Johnson, Sailor, Teagarten. (spelling varies on all these surnames in the old documents) Thanks, Sylvia Stephenson Ross thistles@ocsnet.net ----- Original Message ----- From: <Jerri92345@wmconnect.com> To: <OHDARKE-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, March 05, 2004 7:25 PM Subject: [OHDARKE] Roll Call Darke Co., Ohio > I am looking for information on my great-great grandfather and family, James > Davis, born abt 1810 in Virginia? Hello, I have just mounted an old picture from the 1st Minstrel Show that was performed by the Hoosier Club in Union City. The show took place at the Grand Theater in 1914. The picture includes characters in the Al Jolson "blackface" tradition which was popular in those days, but is very politically incorrect in the current times. There is no offense intended. My parents identified the men in the picture as: First Row: James Ruby, Glen Barr, Victor Thornburg, _____ Braden, Eldan Reichard, O. O. Fraze, Frank Haselmire, Charles Heitzman, Ray Lenich, _____ Vaughn, Elmer Shugars, John Knoll, Victor Wildermuth, Skat Thomas Second Row: Tom Bothast, Kenneth Coats, Harry Thornburg, Pudle McGill, Howard Glunt, Clete Riffle, Tom Mason, Henry Miles, James Potter, Dory Robison, Herbert Wildermuth, Clarence Bothast, Ott Bailey, Carl Rosenbush Orchestra: ______ McDaniel, Claude Heckman, Ralph Thornburg, Everett Williams, Howard Mills, Fred Stebleton, Dr. Ruby on the Piano http://randolph.dcoweb.org/1914hoosier_club.htm --Jane Torres

I want to thank all of those who provided me census information for 1880 and other years on our William Hamilton. It has been a great help in our research. Would like someone to check the actual 1880 census record on the below Hamilton family to confirm the transcription vs. the info I provide below. . The LDS website transscription includes the following info Source Information: Census Place Patterson, Darke, Ohio Family History Library Film 1255010 NA Film Number T9-1010 Page Number 284B W. M. HAMILTON age 65 born Delaware Shoemaker both parents born in Delaware Susan HAMILTON Wife age 56 born Virginia VA Keeps House both parent born in Virginia John HAMILTON Son age 24 born Virginia Farmer James HAMILTON Other age 22 born Virginia VA Farm Hand George HAMILTON Other age 20 born OH Farm Hand Mary HAMILTON Dau age 16 born OH At Home I believe this family is from my wife's line as the birth years and locations for W, his wife and other Hamilton living there match Our records have a William Hamilton born January 23, 1814 - Howeverhis name may have been William Selantial or perhaps James William. Appreciate confirmation of the middle initial.from actual census record. The other 4 members of the household match the names and birth years of the youngest 4 children of William and his wife Susan Ellen Fore. However our unsourced family records indicate that both John and James were born in Ohio.while the LDS transcript inidcate Virginia. Appreciate confirmation on what the actual census status about birth state for John and James as well as their relationship to William (son vs. other). Also, if someone can check the 1870 census for consistency that also would be appreciated. Thanks in advance. Arnie
