Here is a place closer to home that already lost part of the battle to preserve our history. Johnson's Island is a tiny island in Lake Erie just off the shore from Sandusky, OH. A local contractor wanted to blast out one side of the island to form a channel and marina inland, where he wanted to build expensive condos and houses. The people of Johnson's Island fought but the man won and blasted away part of the prison grounds. I walked the area where this prison stood - it's beautiful, wild and haunting. Then I walked the cemetery and was so touched that I kept returning and even wrote a poem about it. Will the cemetery be next I wonder. A Google search for Johnson's Island turned up numerous sites on the place - below are two. The places really need to be protected. "The Confederate Cemetery on Johnson's Island (the only area publicly owned) contains 206 tombstones commemorating the over 300 prisoners that died while imprisoned here." http://www.heidelberg.edu/~dbush/Personal%20Web%20Page.htm History and layout: http://www.fred.net/stevent/JOHNSONS_ISLAND/Jisland.html Shirley Pearson ----- Original Message ----- From: Sharon Statler To: OHDARKE-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, April 02, 2004 3:58 PM Subject: [OHDARKE] Save Civil War Resting Place! Thanks for allowing my post about the Fayettville, WV cemetery and battlefield. I just couldn't let that go without doing something about it. Also, I WISH I could go to the ListFest. I keep meaning to get up that way, but it's a long drive and so many things keep popping up that I MUST do or attend. I grew up in Greenville and lived one street over from the fairgrounds. People parked by our house every year to walk over there for the Great Darke Co. Fair. I loved it! I'll make it to ListFest one day, I promise. I'll be overexhuberant, too, I'm sure. I loves me some Potpie. Yum-yum! Am behind on my email ....for those of you who have never attended ListFest ---- Please ---- TRY IT!!!! I attended the first time last year....these folks knock themselves out bringing all kinds of wonderful info. to get you started or to forward your studies on your families. I did not think I had anything to contribute as a newbie but I did with my cryptic family info. Two things were at the "endless buffet of potluck goodies" --- that I have not seen since my grandmother was alive.....one was milk pie or cream pie and the other was "pot pie." I was truly amazed at seeing these items --- I was the over-exuberant one at this list fest. And truly delicious too not only these two items but all the goodies!!! If you have never attended --- try it!!! For those of you who have RV's --- you can make reservations at the beautiful Darke County Fairgrounds (we have a pop-up and camped out -- my husband enjoyed staying at the fairgrounds while I was listfesting). Lots of shade trees and there was all kind of "doings" at the fairgrounds. They had a bicycle shindig. And also an RV show/get together. The fairgrounds is not far at all from where the ListFest is held. Of course, there are motels, etc. too but just thought I would mention the fairgrounds. You do need to make reservations ahead of time though at the Fairgrounds as it seemed to be a very busy place. June E. Hulit kerryoh@sssnet.com Wooster, OH
Hi Teri and All, The Darke County ListFest is an annual event and will be held on June 19th, 2004. The main purpose of the ListFest is too allow us to actually meet those people we've gotten to know through the e-mail lists. We bring our laptops or notebooks and have a big day comparing notes, families, etc. Susan Kendall has in past years brought a Darke Co. collection of research volumes from her Preble County Library (and I'm sure hoping that she will again do so) and we have a photocopier available. We have local authors who come to join the fun and also bring their books to sell and the Darke County Genealogical Society usually has a table of publications. After we have eaten our noon meal and are full of GREAT FOOD (pot pie this year Michael?), we will be having a short program on cemetery restoration. Wayne has enlisted one of the local monument companies to come talk with us about cemetery restoration, stone repair and replacement, etc. Then, it's back to visiting and doing genealogy for the rest of the afternoon. We have continued this format as people seem to enjoy it immensely. This will be our 5th ListFest and we do have a good time! Of course, the other benefit is that you are in Greenville - the heart of Darke Co. Garst Museum is open during the weekend and is a wonderful place to do family research PLUS you have access to the extensive museum. The public library has a genealogy collection and newspapers on microfilm. We will soon be adding to the information on the web page so please, stay tuned! http://www.dcoweb.org/listfest/listfestintro.htm Hope to see many new faces this year! --Jane -----Original Message----- From: Teri Templeton [mailto:ttempl75@hotmail.com] Sent: Tuesday, March 23, 2004 3:58 PM To: OHDARKE-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [OHDARKE] ListFest 2005 Does anyone know when ListFest is this year? Good morning, The Preble County Room, the Preble County Genealogical Society and the Commodore Preble DAR are again sponsoring a "Night owl prowl" (aka genealogy research lock-in). It will be held on Saturday, April 17th at the Library Administration & Resource Center, 450 S. Barron St. (Rte 127) in Eaton beginning at 4:30 PM. Although the Preble County Room closes at 5 PM, participants will be "locked in" (although you may leave anytime) until 12 midnight. Snacks, water and coffee will be provided. Those with special dietary needs may pack their meal. Bottled drinks are available for purchase at neighboring gas stations. Volunteers will be available to assist researchers in using the Preble County Room collection and on-line resources. There is no charge to attend but registration is limited to 20 in order to assure adequate space and assistance. To register email the Preble County Room at pcroom@infinet.com or call 937-456-4970. -- Susan H. Kendall, Director Preble County District Library 450 S. Ok...so where is Shawnee Prairie Reserve? *grin* Shirley
I did an Advanced Google Search on that phrase, and came up with this: Shawnee Prairie Reserve, 4267 State Route 502, Greenville. -----Original Message----- From: Shirley [mailto:unicorn1945@sbcglobal.net] Ok...so where is Shawnee Prairie Reserve? *grin* Shirley --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. FYI from Shirley Pearson. This msg. went to Delaware and all the surrounding counties. ----- Original Message ----- From: Shirley To: INDELAWA-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Monday, March 22, 2004 10:08 AM Subject: [INDELAWA-L] GenFest 2005 - update Hi listers. Thought I'd update you on the progress in plans for GenFest 2005. I don't have a lot but promised to try and keep you posted as we go. Our initial meeting included, Muncie Public Library, LDS Family History Center, Bracken Library, Delaware County Historical Society and Minnetrista. I presented the concept to all and everyone seemed enthusiastic. A few fresh ideas came up but nothing was set in stone. Our priority now is to find a date that lets all our main resource centers (those mentioned above) be available. Minnestrista and Bracken both must work around some very busy schedules and so then must we. For example: it would do us no good to plan something that included Minnetrista if they have little parking left for our researchers. Bracken has an even more serious consideration - if they are in interim, the library will not/cannot be open at all. We are waiting these two sources and their availability of a reliable calendar for 2005. At that point, we will meet again and set a date that fits everyone's needs. Also, I am bouncing things off Jane Torres who does the Darke County, OH ListFest each year. Thank you, Jane for your patience and willingness to share your experience. (Jane has invited Mike and I to ListFest in June!) We're hearing some really wonderful ideas to make GenFest special. The same is true if you are hunting someone in census records. I have a family who lived on the Darke Co. side of Union City for years, but later found them on Randolph Co. IN census even though they still were in the same town. Karen -----Original Message----- Message Board Post: Are you certain that Tunis Ullom was buried in the Union City Cemetery in Darke County, Ohio? There was a Union City Cemetery on the Ohio side of Union City, which is no longer active.
