I have one page I copied out of the above-referenced paper so I thought I'd share what the local news is for anyone who may be interested. Happy hunting. L.E. WALLIN, of Anderson, Ind., was seeing relatives and meeting friends here Thursday. Quite a number of property owners are putting down cement walks and a great improvement it is for our thriving town. There are yet several badly needed near the center of our city, and where travel is the greatest. Owing to the absence of Assistant Marshal Cal MILLER, he being gone visiting, our old timer John HOOVER acted in his place as night watch the past week, and right well can John fill the place, and violators of the laws seem to know it and take heed. Mrs. John MYERS, new bride of Agent MYERS, met with a rather serious accident Wednesday night by falling down stairs and receiving such injuries as to disable her from moving about since. She was starting down stairs carrying a heavy lamp, when in some manner made a misstep and fell to the floor below. Zachariah MILLER, residing three miles west of town, died Thursday morning of heart trouble, aged ninety years. Funeral service and interment took place Sunday, conducted by Rev. BEARD, of the M.E. Church. The deceased was the oldest resident of this vicinity, and was very active until the past two years. He was known as one of our substantial farmers for many years. Nicholas DIDIER died Wednesday evening of a complication of diseases aged near thirty-six years. Funeral service and interment took place Saturday, conducted by the Knights of St. John order, of which he was a prominent member. The deceased was among our most energetic business men, being a member of the grain firm of Didier & Son for a number of years. He was well and favorably known and had many friends, which fact was verified by the large attendance at his funeral. Savona, O. Len Bussard and Chas. Steinhilber took in the excursion to Cincinnati Saturday.
Elle4n; Also try the Mercer Co Papers. My Grt Aunt and spouce died in Ohio City and death Obit was in Celina and other Mercer Co Papers. Mercer Co adjoins Van Wert. Also the newspaper had her maiden name as Smith when her mother's maiden name was Mahala SMITHSON and her's was Louisa ROOKS. I also had her Mar cert., a dau's extracted birth in Clinton Co Court Records in LDS records,. Now have found that Louisa Rooks and Joseph ( Joel) Boring, he spouce went in 1909 to Cem office at Mt Olive Cem and bought their cem plots with her name as LOUISA ROOKS and his as JOSEPH ( Joel) Boring abt 10 yrs before they died. So from their mouths came her Name of ROOKS as her maiden name. Still one person put her in WCFT as a Smith and connected another Smith family as her parents and other's have picked it up and are further spreading wrong imfo about her parentage and maiden name. Her parents were, William ROOKS b 1817,and Mahala Smithson b 1814 both in Clinton Co. Oh,and she was born in Greene TWP, Clinton Co. Oh Oct 1839. Her mother died in abt 1855 in Marion TWP,.Grundy Co. Mo. Someone who gave newspaper etc thought her name was Smithson and newspaper just put Smith etc. I now have 3 proof's of her maiden name but still the Smith imfo is out there. Hope other's that are descend of Louisa see this and contact me as I have lots of Gen for them corrected. So you never know how much problems come from misspelling names etc. as well as getting things told to family long ago can be misconstrued. I received the following message from my friend, Ron Fernsler and thought I would pass it on to anyone interested in this Darke County family. You can find the blurb along with an order blank at: http://www.dcoweb.org/bookstore/ Thanks! --Jane Torres -----Original Message----- From: Ron Fernsler [mailto:ron@fernsler.com] Sent: Friday, March 14, 2003 5:30 PM To: Torres, Jane E Cc: pfish197@concentric.net Subject: Fernsler book ============================================================================= The Posterity of John Philip and Maria Barbara Fernsler (Farnsler, Fensler, Fansler) Compiled by Clerice Z. Fisher and Ronald E. Fernsler This text covers the ancestry and descendants of Philip Fernsler, who was born in Zttlingen, Germany in 1704, and arrived in Philadelphia in 1727. He married Maria Barbara Georg in 1731. Some of their descendants spell the name Farnsler, Fensler or Fansler. The book, which is fully indexed, contains 1104 pages, and 96 photographs, with biographical sketches on each family member we were able to trace. Some of the female lines included in the book include the surnames: Barlett, Case, Comins, Davidson, Frick, Geib, Hoover, Imboden, Keesbury, Keifer, Krall, Kreps, Lisle, Ludwig, Marshall, Martin, Miller, Moore, Moyer, Nafzger, Poorman, Reist, Ristenbatt, Rohland, Shanaman, Smith, Snyder, Spohn, Stager, Stephens, Tharp, Walters, Williams, Zehrbach, and many more. The plans are to have the book printed on acid free paper, and hard bound, by a commercial printing company. This will require a minimum order of 200 books, and must be paid for in advance. We could turn it over to a printer who specializes in genealogical books and let them advertise it, but they would add a considerable profit to the cost, and would take orders until they were assured of a worth while sale before the book would actually be printed. If orders were insufficient they would cancel the printing. Our plan has always been to sell the book at printing costs, so we are asking for paid in advance orders (checks will not be cashed until we have received the books). We feel this will be the least expensive way to make the family history available to you in a quality, long life book. Paid orders received by April 10, 2003: Price per book: $45.00 Plus Shipping $3.00 Total: $48.00 each Delivery by the printer is scheduled for approximately May 20, 2003 After April 10, any remaining books will be $50.00 each plus shipping while the supply lasts. Make checks payable and send orders to: Clerice Fisher 2139 Sheridan Place Richland, WA 99352 Address questions to the above address, or to Clerice at pfish197@concentric.net or Ron at ron@fernsler.com. Good afternoon, The Preble County Room, Commodore Preble DAR & Preble Co. Genealogical Society are again sponsoring a genealogy research lock-in on Sat., Apr. 12th from 4:30 PM to midnight. We call it Night Owl Prowl. It has become a semi-annual event and FREE. For those who don't know about it, we have volunteers who are familiar with the Preble County Room's holdings and who assist researchers in locating information. They also provide help for those "brick wall" problems.. Researchers also have access to the library's subscribed on-line resources via 10 computers. Registration is limited to 25. The PCRoom closes normally at 5 PM on Saturday. But, those who have registered for the Night Owl Prowl are "locked in" with the volunteers until they chose to leave (or until midnight). There will be snacks provided. Soda pop and candy bars are available in a vending machine for $.50 each. Anyone having additional dietary requirements may bring their food with them, too. We ask that food be consumed in the meeting room only. Please register with the Preble County Room at pcroom@infinet.com. Thanks, Susan -- Susan H. Hi, It appears the "local library" is mine. Here is an obit. for his brother. According to our obit. abstract book (which currently end in 1930) by Audrey Gilbert: Aug. 21, 1930 - in Lewisburg Leader & Eldorado News Jacob Sayring, 75, died near West Manchester Thursday, born Monroe Co., Ohio and lived in West Manchester since 1874. Leaves wife Sophia; brothers Levi of West Manchester and Adam of Germantown; 4 half sisters; 5 half brothers. Funeral Aug. 16 at Twin Creek Chapel. We have clipped and copied the obits. from the Lewisburg Leader as well but only to 1932. Here is Sophia's. Mrs. Sophia Sayring, 76 d. at home short distance southwest of West Manchester Sat. Had a stroke several weeks ago. Was discovered on the floor afterward by her brother John Arnold who lived with her. Native of Montgomery County. Lived on the farm where she d. for past 38 yr. Services at West Manchester Congregational-Christian Church with burial in Twin Creek Chapel cemetery. Survivors are brothers: John Arnold and Wm. Arnold of Ft. Recovery, sister Mrs. Joseph Harshbarger of West Manchester; 2 half sisters & nearly 50 nephews & nieces. Husband, Jacob, d. a little over 2 years ago. We have the original newspapers in book form. Have 1934 on the top of the pile and the 1940 book (on the bottom of a 6 ft. pile). Did not see Levi's obit in 1934. Also have the Arcanum Times for 1934, nothing there either. According to our Preble County death index: Jacob Sayring b. May 6, 1855 & d. Aug. 14, 1930 Levi Sayring b. Mar. 31, 1863 & d. Sept. 12, 1934 Sophia Sayring b. May 10, 1856 & d. Nov. 12, 1932 No record for Clara. Hope this was helpful. Susan -- Susan H. Kendall, Director Preble County District Library 450 S. These individuals are burried in the Castine Ohio cemetery. Does anyone have the obits for them? Sayring, Levi 1863-1934 Sayring, Clara E. 1868-1940 Does the local library have a lookup service? Thanks, -Eric
Hello, I am researching the surnames of Beireis, Boss, Stamm, Wolter, Armbuster, and Bertsch in Darke County. Is there anyone else researching these surnames? If so, I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Jill Bard
Hello List, For many many years I have searched for the last missing dau of my 4th gr-grandparents and I hope someone on the list will be familiar with one or more of the names below. I have had the marriage record below for about 20 years but not following the path of movement of the majority of this family, or their normal naming pattern, Martha E. Creech has been lost to me until just recently. James A. WYANT m.30 Dec 1858 Martha E. CREECH in Vigo Co., IN. I still have not found this couple in 1860. In 1870 they are in Crawford Co., IN, as WYANT. Children were: Sarah 10, James Mc. 6, Alice 4, Ida 1. They were living only a few households from Martha's parents. In 1880 James and Martha show up in Franklin Twp, Darke, Ohio, as WIENT and children were: Sarah J. 18, James Mc. 16, Alice 12, Ida 10, George 8, Elizabeth 5, John 3, Driley 1. Then apparently the "t" at the end of the name got lost and family members start showing up as WYAN. In 1900 Martha WYAN is a 60-yr old widow living in the household of her dau and son-in-law Charles and Drilla HUGHES in Newberry Twp, Miami, Ohio. Martha reported she'd had 9 children with 5 still living. I can only account for son George WYAN who lived consistently in Darke County with his wife Viola and ever-expanding family, and Drilla who married several times. Possibly dau Ida married Abraham R. Garver but I am not sure yet. In 1910, Martha WINES is 68-yrs old and living in the household of her dau and son-in-law Omer N. and Drilla SLONAKER along with the three Hughes children by Drilla's first marriage. I have been unable to find Drilla or her youngest son Glen Hughes in 1920 but in 1930 she is Drilla PENNY living with husband Joseph Penny and her dau Marie Hughes in Monroe Twp, Miami County; son Glen Hughes was at West Milton in Miami County. It is possible that Glen Hughes on the SSDI b.7-19-1899; d.6-1971 Miami County is the same Glen though the birth month is off by a couple months. Given Drilla's history, no telling what her name ended up being. There was a Drilla COLFORD who d.10-25-1931 in Allen Co., OH (Ohio Death Index) and Drilla was not a common name, but I have no way of knowing whether she was the same person. Meanwhile, George and Viola WYAN were still living in Darke County 1900-10-20-30. So, after making a short story long, does anyone have access to cemetery records that possibly list Martha WYANT-WYAN-WIENT-WINES after 1910? She does not appear on the Ohio Death Index under any of those variations (or others that I could think of). Are there any marriage records for the WYAN(t) family in Darke County? Searching the internet, I noted that someone has a lot of data on a WYAN family from PA to Darke Co., OH, and there are a lot of similar names but not the right dates. Whether James A. WYAN(t), husband of Martha, was related to this other group I don't know at this point, but he is not included on their website, so not to be confused. Thank you very much for your time and for any clues/hints anyone might be able to provide. Sincerely, Ruby
