Actually anyone can express their concern! I have been told that the more outside people exert pressure, the more the legislators think others are watching....which may help! Sure can't hurt! Especially if you use Ohio records or have Ohio families to research. Hello Claire, During the 19th century the dress and lifestyle was similar to the Amish. The Brethren website will tell you when the German Baptists broke off into different groups, some embracing modern conveniences but maintaining simple lifestyles and others rejecting modern conveniences while maintaining simple lives. My Darke Co ancestors, Paul Deal/Dale and his wife Mary, very likely moved over from Miami Co to get more land. They had growing families with many sons. The German Baptist Brethren were largely farmers, although some were merchants. They didn't participate in government, and their ministers were lay people. One of these, my ancestor Philip Younce, preached in both Miami and Darke Cos, at least. His home base was Miami Co, but he had his own little circuit of churches, including one or two in Darke. Greenville Creek was one of these, I believe. He preached to both German/Swiss folks and to African American congregations, as he could preach both in German and English. This was written up by a Miami Co man who had known him as a child. I recommend those of you with Miami/Darke roots check the Brethren list Archives to see if your surnames are mentioned. You may be surprised to find you have Brethren roots too, and not just those with German sounding names. Sharon At 10:12 AM 4/24/2003 -0400, you wrote: >Sharon thank you for the links. Date : Wed, 23 Apr 2003 01:56:16 -0400 (Eastern Daylight Time) This notice was posted: http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/index.cfm This Index May Be Inaccessible After July 1, 2003 Due to significant recent and potential decreases in state support, the Ohio Historical Society may be forced to make massive reductions in staff by July 1, 2003. As a result, the death certificate index may be removed from the society's web site. This would be necessary since staff would be unable to fulfill the large number of requests for copies submitted by patrons who use the online index. Onsite access to the index and the death certificates may also be limited by reductions in operating hours of the reading room at the Ohio Historical Center in Columbus. Research assistance via telephone, fax, e-mail, and postal mail will likely be curtailed as well. For more information about Anabaptists in Darke Co, check out the archives of the BRETHREN-L@rootsweb.com for the surnames. Or join and ask questions. There were one or two German Baptist congregations in Darke Co, don't know about Mennonite. Often German-speaking settlers searched out an existing church that was German-speaking. There was a lot of movement between the Anabaptist groups. I would like to hear from anyone who has any information pertaining to James and Sophia Clemens in Darke County, Ohio, from the early-to-mid 1800's. Both James and Sophia were reportedly former free slaves of my 5th Great Grandfather, Adam Sellers. Originally from Rockingham County, Virginia, they relocated to Ohio in 1817 when my grandfather, Adam Sellers, moved to be with his sons and a daughter in Warren County, Ohio, near Springboro. Adam took James and Sophia to Darke County and provided for their welfare until his death in 1821. In a letter to a cousin in 1887 Adam's grandson, also named Adam Sellers, outlined that Adam had moved to Ohio, stopping for a time in the German Township (now Liberty) in Darke County, Ohio. He spent several months there while his former slaves became established before moving on to Warren County. In an article for the Underground Railroad, the following was written concerning James Clemens, his wife, Sophia, and the farmstead they built in the German Township: "The James and Sophia Clemens Farmstead is one of the oldest and last remaining agricultural resources in one of Ohio's earliest black settlements, Longtown (Greenville settlement). This farmstead was the home of James Clemens (1781-1870), who was the founding father of the settlement, instrumental in starting the first school, donated land for the Wesleyan Church and established a cemetery for the community. The Clemens were also conductors in the Underground Railroad and soldiers in the Civil War. The records of the first landowners of Darke County, Ohio, show that James Clemens was the first free black man to purchase land in German township. Arriving with his wife Sophia in 1818 from Virginia, he soon built a thriving farm business. Sophia's maiden name was Sellers, and she is believed to be the daughter of Adam Sellers of Rockingham County, Virginia the former slave owner of James Clemens." I'm interested in learning more about James and Sophia, their own ancestors, and their descendents. I would love to hear from anyone who descends from them and/or who knows anything about them at all, especially during their time in Rockingham County, Virginia. Any info pertaining to their life, their final resting place, etc., is most welcome! The articles I have read all state that "Sophia's maiden name was Sellers" and that she is "believed to be the daughter of Adam Sellers of Rockingham County, Virginia the former slave owner of James Clemens". In knowing that this Adam Sellers was my 5th Great Grandfather, I'm all the more interested in learning more about James and Sophia. Again, I'd like to hear from anyone who has any information and/or from anyone who has helpful hints or suggestions on where and how to look for more about them. Thanks! Michael Sellers 5th Great Grandson of Adam Sellers

Brookville, OH in Montgomery Co just opened a Brethren Heritage Center--the write up in the Brookville Star stated that they had books/papers/Bibles from many different Brethren communities there. Please email me privately if you are interested in further. Greenville, Darke County, had a very strong element of Brethren, I believe, and they still have the Brethren Home as an assisted living arrangement. I think that Anabaptist = Brethren, but I might be wrong. At my mother's burial in 1988 in Greenville, several people came, still dressing in Brethren clothing (for lack of a better word). My mother taught in a country school and one of her pupils was a gentleman named Norman Burns who became, among other things, the president of the American University in Beirut, Lebanon. Upon his return to this country in the '70's he was writing a book on the Brethren of Darke county. I have no information further on him, sadly. My main reason in writing, is not that you won't get better info from the DCo group directly. But if you get info off the list, could you let me know. I'd love to know more about the folks there.
