    3. Dear Ceal, Good point--there could be so many reasons. Alicia's husband, JOHN HENRY GALVIN, was also supposed to have lost his Irish family. The family story is that he lost them on the boat over arond 1846, when he was about 2, and was adopted by an English family. I have never been able to find out if this was the case, I keep trying to find out who raised him. Thanks and good luck to you, Catherine OHCUYAHO-D-request@rootsweb.com wrote: > ATTACHMENT part 1 message/rfc822 OHCUYAHO-D Digest Volume 04 : Issue 293 Today's Topics: #1 Unmarried woman living alone in Cl [Catherine Galvin #2 orphanages ["Richard Chafin" #3 Re: [OHCUYAHO] Unmarried woman liv [CEAL611@aol.com] Administrivia: To unsubscribe from OHCUYAHO-D, send a message to OHCUYAHO-D-request@rootsweb.com that contains in the body of the message the command unsubscribe and no other text. Hello, You all are so helpful, so I thought you might be able to help with this. I just found my husband's g-g-g-grandmother ALICIA JULIA HYDE in the Cleveland Directory in 1865-66. She is a boarder at 273 Columbus and is unmarried--, no profession is listed. Since I have not been able to find a family for ALICIA, or to find her in the 1850 or 1860 census, I am grabbing at this thread. Here is my question: what was she doing living in Cleveland, alone, in 1865? Could she have been a teacher (my mother-in-law seems to remember hearing this) and if so, how do I find that out? Also, is it possible to find out whom she rented from? She claimed in her husband Civil War pension paperwork that she was born in October of 1844 in Steubenville, Ohio, so she would have been about 21 at the time. In April of 1866 she would mary JOHN HENRY GALVIN. I tried "paging through" the directory to find other unmarried women boarders, but it seemed pretty unusual--should I be shocked? Thank you for any thoughts on this. She had come from Ireland to live with a relative who ran a boarding house after all of her family had died. She probably would not have had a profession listed as she most probably helped out at the boarding house until she married in 1873. I have been unsuccesful in finding her living here in Cleveland prior to the 1880 census. I know she was here. I just can't find her. There could be numerous reasons for your g-g-g grandmother living alone in Cleveland at that time.
