Hi, Cross your fingers that your family came from Mecklenburg. All the church records have been filmed by the Mormons. I took a stab when I found that a person of the same name came from Mecklenburg-Strelitz (M-St. - the east half) and sent to the Archive in Mecklenburg-Schwerin (west half) (City of Schwerin is the capitol of both sides now.) for the permission to emigrate papers for my family. I was rewarded with 35 pages of permission forms and letters, with the actual permission to leave. They threw in the fiance with it. It had names and birth dates of each of the children of the family as well. Well worth the wait and the cost. There is a Mecklenburg Marriage Index at least for M-St. by Schuman. I am not sure where this might be here, but it is at Salt Lake Family History Library. Unfortunately it is in German. You could try to get the naturalization papers for your folks. Check the church records carefully. The marriage record (US civil) in that time period will not be much help. Look for a gravestone of other family that might give more information. Check the "Germans To America" series for passenger records. It is generally found around here that if a place was stated as Wittenburg (or similar spelling) they usually meant Wuertemburg. Check the 8 volumes (so far) of the "Wuertemburg Emigration Index" by Trudy Schenk and her friend. This is available in book form in many libraries and as a CD ROM. There is a copy at Western Reserve Historical Society. Check the 1907 voter registration list at www.wrhs.org . If you find it, go order the original. This gives the place of naturalization and sometimes you get lucky with more. Check at the Cuyahoga Co. Archives in the voter registration cards also for this information. If you think Mecklenburg is the place, you might like to join the Mecklenburg-L list. Very helpful. I made friends there who had access to the Marriage Index who could do a lookup at their library. There is a list for Wuertemburg as well. You will get acquainted with the on-line translators like www.dictionary.com translator. Happy Hunting! Cynthia in Lake County
