    3. Catherine, Oldenburg is a state in Germany up near Denmark neighboring Schleswig-Holstein. There is also a city of Oldenburg. Could "Les viesel" have been someone's attempt at a contraction for Schleswig-Holstein? There is also an Oldenburg in Schlewig-Holstein itself. Prussia seems like too much of an inclusive term, but then Prussia was growing and could have had claims on Oldenburg by 1870. Check some historical maps of Prussia. I doubt it was Baden and Wuerrtemburg--too far south. I'd go with the most contemporaneous information which seems to be the 1860 census. A great map site for Germany is http://www2.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/ Barb ----- Original Message ----- From: "Catherine Galvin" <catgalvin@yahoo.com> To: <OHCUYAHO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 24, 2004 10:37 PM Subject: [OHCUYAHO] Help with German birthplaces in 1860 census? > Hello, > Could someone help with this? My great-great-great grandfather JOHN WIGGERS and his wife CATHERINE change their birth places over the years. I feel very foolish asking for help with this, but have been squinting at maps for quite a while and have not come to a conclusion. > JOHN 1860: Oldenburgh (?), Germany CATHERINE 1860: Les Viesel (?) > John 1880: Prussia CATHERINE (appears as SASHA) 1880 Prussia > Also in 1880, their married daughter Doretta lists her parents as be in born in: > (Father) Baden (Mother) Wurttenburgh. > If this helps, John was a piano maker who probably came to the states no later than 1850. My grandmother claims that he built the first upright piano in the United States, but that is obviously hogwash. > Can anyone interpret these different answers? What is Les Weisel and where might it be? Also, any help with the Wiggers name would be wonderful. > ( I am sheepishly admiting this, but these Wiggers did not live in Cuyahoga. There just aren't any German Experts like you all on the other boards!
