    3. Of the 900 HEGEDUS who arrvived via Ellis Island 33 declared their race to be Slovak. It is not uncommon to find names which are common amongst one ethnic group belonging to another. It is doubtful that they would have claimed to be Slovak if the were not! However maybe your HEGEDUS simply came from the area that would become Slovakia after WW I. Robert Jerin JANDA143@aol.com wrote: Dear List, I am new to this list and somewhat new to research in the USA. I am looking for some guidance with my research on my HEGEDISH line. The following is what I know: ~It is safe to assume that the name was originally HEGEDS. ~He is in the 1920 census under HAGADISH, stating that he immigrated in 1895 and was naturalized in 1902. ~In the 1930 census his wife is a widow. ~He married Mary Frances Kasper, location unknown ~He had the following children: Margaret Lindway, Elizabeth Kocsik, Helen Yondo, John, and Thomas ~The Cleveland Necrology file shows a John Hegedish dying in 1922, no obit/ only cemetery record ~His daughter would always tell me that she was Slovak, however Hegedus is a very common Hungarian name. What should I do next? Should I try to locate the naturalization records and if so, what will that tell me? Any suggestions are VERY welcome and thank you in advance!
