Dear List, I am new to this list and somewhat new to research in the USA. I am looking for some guidance with my research on my HEGEDISH line. The following is what I know: ~It is safe to assume that the name was originally HEGEDÜS. ~He is in the 1920 census under HAGADISH, stating that he immigrated in 1895 and was naturalized in 1902. ~In the 1930 census his wife is a widow. ~He married Mary Frances Kasper, location unknown ~He had the following children: Margaret Lindway, Elizabeth Kocsik, Helen Yondo, John, and Thomas ~The Cleveland Necrology file shows a John Hegedish dying in 1922, no obit/ only cemetery record ~His daughter would always tell me that she was Slovak, however Hegedus is a very common Hungarian name. What should I do next? Should I try to locate the naturalization records and if so, what will that tell me? Any suggestions are VERY welcome and thank you in advance! There is a John HEGEDESH at http://www.rootsweb.com/~ohcuyah2/nats/coarch/part2/pg0097.html. Have you checked the Ellis Island website? >~He married Mary Frances Kasper, location unknown Have you checked the marriage index at http://probate.cuyahogacounty.us/ml/ ? (It doesn't seem to be working this morning. You might want to try it Monday.) >~The Cleveland Necrology file shows a John Hegedish dying in 1922, no obit/ >only cemetery record Searching for firstname "John" and lastname "Heg" in Cuyahoga Co. in 1922 at http://www.ohiohistory.org/dindex/ gets a couple of possibilities. You may want to order the death certificates. Once you know the exact date of death you can request an obit lookup from the Cleveland Public Library at Microform.Center@cpl.org. Last time I checked it was free. It may take a few weeks. >~His daughter would always tell me that she was Slovak, however Hegedus is a >very common Hungarian name. I'm no expert, but Slovakia was part of the A-H Empire before WWI. Many Slovak names were "Magyarized" by edict. *** Good luck! -- Dennis M. Kowallek kowallek@iglou.com ******************
