    2. Is anyone researching the Beitt surname in Ohio? I am trying to piece together the Beitt family in Cleveland. My grandmother, Hannah Beitt, was born in 1871 in Germany, died in1948 in Indianapolis, married Ira Lee Hammond. I believe her parents must have been Gottfried Beitt (1818-1908) and Justina [Gustie] Gross (1825-1910 ). In the 1880 census their name is spelled Beight. The 1900 census indicates there were 13 children, eight of them living in 1900. They immigrated from Germany/Prussia around 1873, and according to the 1920 census listing for the wife of Paul Karp, may have come from Koenigsburg. It is possible that some of the family arrived on the Caledonia on 10 July 1873. The Castle Garden database has their surname listed/indexed as Bertt. Four of their children are Justine (1863-1910 m. Paul Karp), Hannah (my grandmother), William (1853-1927, m. Augusta), and Caroline (1874-?, m. Hahn). Between the census, the Cleveland Necrology file, Cleveland City Directories, property records, and scanty family lore, I have found other possible children, and also Zuck grandchildren. There are also Beitts from Chicago who moved back to Cleveland and Medina (Herman b. abt 1849, m Eliza, children August, Harry, Paul, and Minnie). Family stories suggest that the children were my mother’s cousins. I hope there is some distant cousin out there to join me in tackling the Beitt mystery.
