Bill, I don't find a listing for John RUCKI in the Cleveland Library Necrology files. http://dxsrv4.cpl.org/WebZ/Authorize?sessionid=0&next=/html/obit_start.html&dbchoice=1:dbname=necr&bad=html/authofail.html&style=noframe According to the 1930 census a John RUCKI worked at a woolen mill. Many Poles in Cleveland worked at CLEVELAND WORSTED MILL CO. The area where the mill was located is now called Slavic Village after the Slavic people who settled there at the turn of the century, most of whom were Poles. There were also Czechs and Croatians who settled that area. http://ech.case.edu/ech-cgi/article.pl?id=CWMC John lived with a Czech family... they lived about a block behind the mill to the west. The 1918 WW I Draft Registration shows a John RUCKI living on Gallup Ave, just north of the 1930 address, b'date listed as Dec 25 1875 next kin Anna RUCKI living in Sliczko, Austria-Hungary (Poland was split 3 ways in the late 1770s with the west going to Prussia, the east to Russia and the south to Austria, the Austrian part was called Galicia or Galicy) The 1930 census stated he arrived1909, there is a Jan RUCKI arr Nov 1909 at the Port of NY from Jaworzynka, Galicy whose next of kin was wife Anna Destination to brother Mihal at Boomer W VA Robert Jerin Bill Gatchell <[email protected]> wrote: I'm looking for some help finding the obituary for John Rucki who died 25 Feb 1936. I have a copy of the death certificate which shows he died in Cleveland. Could someone point me in the right direction; I haven't done research in the Cleveland area before and I live in Texas. Robert and others, Thank you for your comments/suggestions both public and private. As usual when I read the comments/suggestions of others I thought of other details I should have put into to make this a more effective call for help: My ancestor Anthony Rucki died 26 Dec 1929 in Toledo, Lucas County. His parents are named on his death certificate as: John Rucki & Katarzyna Zalewski. John & Katarzyna are reported to have been born in Poland on his death certificate. Anthony is reported to have be born in Poland on the death certificate but his WWI draft registration card (presumeably filled out by himself) reports his place of birth as Somza, Russia. I've been crossing my fingers that his parents made it to the US with him but I have no proof of this at this point except a brief mention of a John Rucki (Louisa) at 3361 Lagrange in the 1923 Polk directory. My Anthony is also noted there on that year at 2821 Buckeye. This is all far removed from the Cleveland area I understand but having no luck in Lucas County I'm now chasing down Rucki's (John's and Katarzyna's first) outside of Lucas County in hopes of finding some reference of relationship to my Lucas County Anthony Rucki. The obituaries of Anthony Rucki were unique and multiple as he hung himself in the family home. Unfortunately there was no mention in the english language news articles of his suicide and final obituary. As I review the documents I have found about Anthony there is an obituary that is I believe in Polish, Ameryka Echo, Monday 30 Dec 1929, page 8, C. 6. If anyone with a talent to read Polish would be interested in reviewing this for me I can scan a copy by email. I did an extensive search of the Cleveland Public Library; Cleveland Necrology File today with the following wildcards Ruc*, Ruk*, Rue*, etc. but didn't find the John Rucki that I have the death certificate for that died in Cleveland 26 Feb 1936. This would be a good canidate for my Anthony's father timeline wise. In fact I didn't find one Rucki in this database. I subscribe to www.newspaperarchives.com but this collection currently doesn't have newspapers from Cleveland. Does the Cleveland Public Library have their local newspapers on film by chance? If not who might archive such a collection? Again, I appreciate everyone's comments/suggestions. Any further points are always welcome.
