Hi, my great grandfather died in Cleveland RR accident during the CW! I have read RR workers were exempt from war duty during CW. Assuming this was true & he started working for RR a short time before the yard accident durin the CW, where would there be a record of his exemption? Luck for me, his wife(my great grandmother) had my Grandmother in her belly when he was killed! Dick in MD
On thing is many weren't exempt as such they just were still working on the RR. I read a book about this part of the Civil War a long long time ago before I knew my 2Xggf was a RR man during this period. There would be "accident" caused by troops putting logs (trees*G*) on the tracks and hold ups as Federal or Confederate troops tried to get transport (or goods) Being a RR worker in the CW was not a pass by any means.
