Good morning Ellyn, You may also want to write to St. Theodosius' cemetery for all information they have in their records. The address and telephone number is on my website. Thank you for the offer of the 1946 50th Golden Anniversary book. I am in the process of putting its information on Cleveland's Southside and that site has a search engine where one can look for names. We have also uploaded various photos from the book and will be putting more pictures in the future. When you write St. Theodosius about your husband's "christening" record ask for his Baptismal/Confirmation record. Greek (Byzantine) Catholics and Orthodox children are baptized and confirmed at the same time. In some cases, the parents' and godparents' religious and personal information is added to the record to show that they "qualify" to hold the position they are seeking. Some Records of Death also show more personal information than you would expect, especially if the person was married. As to the relative who was a Russian Orthodox priest, you need to look to Greek Catholic churches in the area where he may have practiced. In Pennsylvania especially, there was a movement towards Orthodoxy from the Greek Catholic religion in the early 1900s. That relative was very likely a Greek Catholic priest who defected. Again, go to my website for information and links on this movement. (The St. Theodosius page) It is not unusual for some immigrants to have no marriage license in the early 1900s. I have seen it in researching persons who belonged to the Greek Catholic and Orthodox religions. I don't know if they did not think a license was necessary and/or did not know such a thing existed or the priest failed to register the marriage once he officiated it. A distant relative of mine was married in New York State in 1906, at the home of a cousin who came over earlier. It took me almost 20 years to find the marriage record and it came from a Greek Catholic church. They only stayed in New York for less than a month (so the Banns could be read in church) and then moved to the coalmines of Southwest Pennsylvania and then ultimately Cleveland. If I assumed that there would be a civil document on their marriage I would be still looking because there isn't anything. Write to me off forum if I could be of any help. I am especially interested in the St. Theodosius choir director who was in your family. He might be your "wild card" when it comes to getting church records!
