Their life experiences are documented in a new exhibit, “A New Frontier across the Ocean,” which opens Saturday, January 16, 2010 at the Western Reserve Historical Society in University Circle . With images collected and catalogued by the digital archives of Multimedial Archive Memoirs of Regional Emigration (AMMER) and edited by Antonio Giusa and Manuela Astore, the exhibition is presented in partnership with The Consulate of Italy in Detroit . “A New Frontier across the Ocean” opens January 16, 2010 and runs through March 4, 2010 at the Western Reserve Historical Society’s University Circle Complex, 10825 East Boulevard in Cleveland . Museum hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10:00am – 5:00pm. For more information, go to www.wrhs.org. Using DNA in Genealogy Seminar on Saturday, February 6, 2010 Steve Garland, the administrator of the Garland DNA Project and an experienced family history researcher, will be presenting at WRHS a seminar covering the basics of DNA as well as how surname DNA testing is performed and organized. The title of his seminar is “Genealogical Research—Using DNA to Close the Gaps.” To learn more about surname DNA testing projects, visit his Garland Project website at http://www.worldfamilies.net/surnames/garland. The Registration fee for this event is only $15. The registration form will be available on the WRHS website at www.wrhs.org. Click on the Library/Archives and Genealogy Center tab, then on the Genealogy link. Census Bureau Gearing Up for 2010 Census Census Day 2010 will be on Apr 1, 2010. Every household in the United States will be mailed a questionnaire asking 10 questions about each member of each household. This will be the 23rd decennial census in a series that began in 1790. The Census Bureau will be hiring enumerators to follow up with all households that do not mail the questionnaire back in a timely fashion. If you are interested in this part-time employment, you can call this toll-free telephone number: 1-866-861-2010, or go to the website: www.2010censusjobs.gov to find your local census office. The first step is to schedule an appointment to take a half-hour test. Hiring will be based on test scores and local manpower needs. The website provides a practice test that can help prepare you for taking the test. Beginner’s Course: Exploring Family History on Saturday, March 6, 2010 Do you have a friend or family member who wants to learn more about how to do genealogy and family history research? Tell them about the next Exploring Family History workshop, scheduled for Saturday March 6 at Western Reserve . The workshop is designed for people with little or no experience in researching their ancestors. It focuses on learning how to conduct research in U.S. Census records from 1790 to 1930. Time will be available for on-line census research during the workshop. Other record types will also be discussed, including vital records, military records, land records and deeds, obituaries, etc. Most attendees find records about ancestors during the hands-on portion of this workshop.
