    1. Re: [OHCUYAHO] "Passenger Lists and Naturalization Records"
    2. I'd love to come, but I live in Seattle... Here's my question, though. I have an ancestor I know from letters was in New York City in June 1850. He turns up, though, late in that month or in July, in the census in Dubuque. I'm sure it's the right person because all the stats are right. Question is, how did he get there? He had been a Methodist missionary in Liberia, and I have some artifacts that have come down in the family but can't find him on any ships lists. He was a US citizen. Is this why? Did the lists only show immigrants who disavowed allegiance to former countries and avowed allegiance to the King of England or US, depending on the date? If only non-citizens are shown, how do I start looking for his mode of transportation? I don't know he came thru Cleveland, but I'm suspicious. He married a Cleveland girl in 1851 in Dubuque. 3. Ship manifests include anyone who traveled aboard that ship, including ship's crew (at least alien members of the crew), US Citizens, aliens and non-immigrant aliens (that is an alien who had been in the US prior to this trip and was returning). And forget the part about avowing aliegence to anyone, that was not a requirement. Also forget about the King of England as up until about 1820 people traveled feely to the US and simply walked off the ship at the dock and into the US, no inspection required. So the reason you are not finding him could be: 1) a manifest that is difficult to read and the name has been mis-transcribed, 2) the manifest for his ship has not been transcribed at all or.. his page has been missed by transcribers.... or 3) the family story is simply a story... So the question ... who was this person and what was his birth year? 1. [OHCUYAHO] Peter Busch and Emma Schmitz family
    2. Jeanne Crews
    3. Anna Maria "Emma" Schmitz married Peter Busch shortly after 1870. She was the daughter of Nicholas Schmitz and Maria Katherine Minnich (or Muench in German)and the sister of my gr-gr-grandfather Stephen. In 1880 the Busches were living in Amherst, Lorain County, but I think they probably went to Cuyahoga County. Children that I've found include Catherine, Stephen, Nicholas, Mary, Peter P., and Anna J. Some of my information comes from the Ohio Death Certificate Index. Also, there could have been more children because I haven't found them in 1900. I think Catherine married a Mr. Dolezall and died in 1911. Stephen died in 1914 in Cleveland and was married to Sophie Oberacker. I think Nicholas was married to Julia Dvorak and died in Bedford in 1960 (from an obit in the necrology file). Peter P. was married to Mary Hanley and died in 1942. And Anna J. was married to Fred Bauer and died in 1937 in Akron. If anyone has any additional information or is connected, I would love to hear from you. Thanks, Jeanne

    1. [OHCUYAHO] Schmitz or Minnich relatives from Rhineland Prussia Germany
    2. Jeanne Crews
    3. I'm new to the Cuyahoga County list. My ancestor, Stephen Schmitz, came to America in about 1864 at the age of 19. His family was living in the town of Illerich, which is now in the Rhineland Province of Germany but which was part of Prussia when he came. A family story says that he deserted the Prussian army and stowed away on a ship. The story also says that he first came to see relatives in Cleveland but couldn't find work, so he then moved to Lorain County and got a job in the quarries, working to save enough to bring his parents and younger siblings. I don't know who the relatives in Cleveland were. So I'm hoping that maybe this story may sound familiar to someone. His parents were Nicholas Schmitz and Maria Katherine Minnich (Muench). Another close by town in Germany is Landkern, and there were a lot of Schmitzes there. Any leads would be appreciated! Thanks, Jeanne

    3. The following is from my upcoming book on the Cleveland Germans. Call the church and check with the WRHS Deutsche Evangelisch-Protestantische Dreifaltigkeits-GemeindeEarly Clergy: Duerr, Horn, Schneider, Stempel, H.C. Germann (until 1878), August Kimmel (1878-1929), John Etjen. This church was formed in 1874 by members who split from Die Deutsche Evangelische Protestantische Kirche and met at the home of Christian Nobbe on old Clifton Street (E.39th). At a later meeting at Louis Zimmermann’s Hall at St. Clair and Lyman (E.41st) they resolved to incorporate. Pastor Duerr, who was then serving the Christ Episcopal Church on Orange Street, declared willingness to preach to this new congregation. Meeting temporarily in an English-speaking Episcopal church at Superior and Alabama (E.26th), the members decided to buy land at the southwest corner of Case Avenue (E.40th) and Cooper for $7500. After setting the cornerstone in June 1874, Pastor Duerr stepped down and Bishop William Horn of the Evangelical Association, and Pastors Schneider and Stempel served as interim ministers. Stempel dedicated the church building in 1875. In 1919, this church consolidated with Die Deutsche Evangelische Protestantische Kirche, which relocated to Thornhill Drive and Arlington Avenue. It became known as the First Evangelical and Reformed Church which went through subsequent consolidations to become Fellowship United Church of Christ in Wickliffe. ----- Original Message ---- From: "genealogygal2@juno.com" <genealogygal2@juno.com> To: OHCUYAHO-L@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, August 1, 2008 8:50:42 AM Subject: [OHCUYAHO] Trinity Evangelical Independent Church Hi: I'm interested to know if anyone knows where I might find the church records for Trinity Evangelical (Independent) Church which was located at 171 Case in the year 1899.  Case later became E. 40th and this church was located at approximately Case and Cooper.  I haven't been able to find this church still in existence today and am hoping someone might know where their records would be located.  In 1899, the Pastor there was Rev. 1. [OHCUYAHO] Federation of East European Family History Societies
    2. Robert Jerin
    3. Conference aims to help genealogists uncover Eastern European branches of family trees Wednesday, July 23, 2008 By Marylynne Pitz, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette Archives Service Center, University of Pittsburgh Hungarian-American employee at the Carnegie-Illinois Steel Corp. Homestead Steel Works Press Shop in 1944. If you are a descendant of the millions of immigrants who came to America from Central or Eastern Europe, tracing your family tree can be a challenge because borders changed often in those regions during the 20th century; even today, each country handles records differently. But genealogy guru Stephen P. Morse made parts of this fascinating and frustrating task easier when he created One-Step Search Tools, a streamlined way of searching the Ellis Island Web site after it launched in April 2001. He'll be here Aug. 1 to give the keynote address at the opening session of the three-day Federation of East European Family History Societies' 14th annual genealogy conference at the Pittsburgh Airport Marriott Hotel in Findlay. This is the first time the conference has met in Pittsburgh. An estimated 7.5 million immigrants from Eastern Europe came to America between 1880 and 1914. The local mills and factories drew many of those people here. As of 1900, the U.S. Census counted 86,158 people in Allegheny County from Central or Eastern Europe, including Hungarians, Germans, Poles, Romanians and Austrians. The total number of foreign-born people living in Allegheny County that year was 191,479. --------------------------------- Find your Eastern or Central European roots What: A genealogical conference called Pittsburgh: The East European Magnet. When: Aug. 1-3. Where: Airport Marriott Hotel, 777 Aten Road, Findlay. Web site: feefhs.org. Information: Lisa Alzo, conference chair, 412-848-1394. --------------------------------- Even if your family came from another part of the world, this gathering, which features 24 speakers, offers sessions for beginners who want to learn more about a mysterious relative or just locate the baptismal certificate of a Slovak grandmother. Registered participants can sign up for one-on-one consultations with conference speakers. Among the 58 presentations, topics include "Acquisition of Jewish Records in Eastern Europe," "Finding Your Grandma at Ellis Island," plus "Baptisms and Beyond: Record Holdings of Catholic Parish Archives." Lisa Alzo, the conference chair, said the federation promotes family history research for people whose ancestors emigrated from Central and Eastern Europe. "Many of our members and officers actually work at the Family History Library in Salt Lake City," one of the main repositories for genealogy. "When something is microfilmed, we know right away," Ms. Alzo said, adding that the organization counts 26 organizations under its umbrella as well as 132 individuals. Marilyn Cocchiola Holt, head of the Pennsylvania Department at Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Oakland, said the conference is an excellent opportunity to learn more about genealogy and hear Dr. Morse. The library is one of the conference sponsors. A hero to professional genealogists as well as to people who are exploring their roots, Dr. Morse is an electrical engineer who was the architect of Intel's 8086 processor, the granddaddy of the Pentium processor used in today's computers. "Everyone who has used his shortcut methods knows how useful and helpful they are in using online databases, which can be very confusing and hard to work with," she said. Ms. Holt, who gives a talk for beginning genealogists on Aug. 1-2, will highlight some special resources, such as Indiana University of Pennsylvania's special collection on coal mines, miners, disasters and the culture of coal in this region. The McKeesport Heritage Center keeps back issues of the McKeesport Daily News as well as city directories. Many Central and Eastern Europeans earned their living at National Tube Works in McKeesport. "So many people are intimidated by genealogy. All you need to do is take that one first step," she said, adding that it's exciting when people find information about their relatives in census, naturalization, church and cemetery records. "One thing builds upon another. It can be done," Ms. Holt said. Often, she added, people "find gratifying and interesting information about family members they may just remember very dimly, and it brings them back to life for them," she added Federation of East European Genealogy Socities Conference Pittsburgh PA Aug 2008 http://feefhs.org/

    3. Do contact the Western Reserve Library and they can direct you to a division of the library (maybe it was the Archives) where they have copies of most yearbooks.  I was looking at books from the 1920s as well as some memorbilia from the era.  It was very interesting   --- On Fri, 7/25/08, Nancy Schramm <nancy.schramm@gmail.com> wrote: From: Nancy Schramm <nancy.schramm@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [OHCUYAHO] Yearbooks from Western Reserve U & Flora Stone Mather College To: ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com Date: Friday, July 25, 2008, 12:53 PM Janet: If you don't hear from anyone who has these books, try Case Western Reserve University Library or the Western Reserve Historical Society ( www.WRHS.org <http://www.wrhs.org/>).
