Pacific Daylight Time From: _rjerin26@yahoo.com_ (mailto:rjerin26@yahoo.com) Reply To: _ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com_ (mailto:ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com) Ship manifests include anyone who traveled aboard that ship, including ship's crew (at least alien members of the crew), US Citizens, aliens and non-immigrant aliens (that is an alien who had been in the US prior to this trip and was returning). And forget the part about avowing aliegence to anyone, that was not a requirement. Also forget about the King of England as up until about 1820 people traveled feely to the US and simply walked off the ship at the dock and into the US, no inspection required. So the reason you are not finding him could be: 1) a manifest that is difficult to read and the name has been mis-transcribed, 2) the manifest for his ship has not been transcribed at all or.. his page has been missed by transcribers.... or 3) the family story is simply a story... So the question ... who was this person and what was his birth year? He had been a Methodist missionary in Liberia, and I have some artifacts that have come down in the family but can't find him on any ships lists. He was a US citizen. Is this why? Did the lists only show immigrants who disavowed allegiance to former countries and avowed allegiance to the King of England or US, depending on the date? I, myself , tend to get stuck using the same old search engines and need to get prodded at times to check out other sources. I have often found listings on the free searches that I never have found on ancestry. The list only benefits from everyones input. I, myself , would like to thank you!! 3. Let me emphasize that, as Robert has pointed out, there are other services which may be better than what I choose to use. And, as many of you will see if you try any of these free services, there are many errors. I am listed as living with friends and associates I never lived with, for example, and many phone numbers were disconnected long ago. But, the advantage of using these services is that they can make the hunt for relatives much easier, even if we are unable to find obituaries on people. I have no experience ordering the paid information offered by these services, so I do not know what it consists of. I have found myself able to locate relatives using just the free services alone. There are living people whose names or lifestyles will still make them elusive or even impossible to locate this way. But it is great when it does work. As some of you may know, Ancestry.com also has a public records search feature for the U.S. and also old phone directory listings. But many listers do not belong to it, so I did not mention it, although a friend likes it better than the free people search sites. 3. I read about the People Search function available on Veromi.net for the first time in a posting from the The Cohens on 24 Aug in response to a query about the Starynchak family. As they pointed out, a search of this website yields many Starynchaks who might be cousins of Barb who posted a query about this family. I did try Vermoi.net with my own surname, and all my family, plus several known and possible cousins, popped up. A listing for my mother, who is deceased, even appeared as a search result. I recognize many slight spelling errors in given names and surnames, but the ages given seem to be correct. So much for privacy!! Apparently you can order public records from Veromi for any person named in a search result for about $10 or a package of several people for a higher fee. Does anyone have experience with ordering records from Vermoi.net? The posting from The Cohens recommended using the Vermoni.net search results as starting points for looking up phone numbers on Internet phone directories and using them to contact possible cousins. 1. [OHCUYAHO] My posting about Starynchak family was misdirected
    2. Wallace Huskonen
    3. In case anybody is confused by my posting on 24 Aug about Starynchak family records, I mistakenly directed it to Lilly Martin, who sent in a query about the Burden family. My posting should have been for Barb, who was the inquirer about the Starynchak family. Sorry Lilly, sorry Barb. Barb has since has straightened me out and I was able to forward to her email address the death certificate I found for her grandfather Theodor Starynchak. He was listed as Frank Theodore Starynschuk on a death certificate on the LDS website http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch. The informant on the death cert was Katie Starynschuk, and Barb had named Katie as Theodor's wife. Note that she spelled the surname differently from Barb. I also forwarded a death certificate for a child of Julia Starynchak Vana, who is named as a daughter of Theodor and Katie in the obit of Mar 4 1967 found and posted by Pat Smith on 23 Aug. I provided instructions to Barb to sign up for access to search.labs.familysearch.org so she could search for other relatives. Wally Huskonen, CG whuskonen@roadrunner.com

    3. The 411 web page may be misleading! I have not used 411 for a while so I thought I would try it again.... and it has not changed. Trying several family members it gave several wrong answers... for instance an aunt who passed several years ago and a house my son owns but has never lived in. You may want to try Switchboard.com... and the results are much faster than 411. http://switchboard.com/ Robert the cohens <the.cohens.in.california@gmail.com> wrote: You are in luck. You could try other people search sites like yahoo or zaba, but this is the one I use. That will give you a number of family constellations who are clearly your relatives. Study the most recent towns they lived in (I think the ones at the top) and then go to http://411.com and enter just the surname alone for the state of ohio to begin with, or the whole country or another state or specific town if you want. Then see who you want to call, based on the combined information from the obituary and the people search. If you study the information carefully, chances are pretty good that your first call will be to a relative! I have used this technique to locate and connect with hithertoo unknown or much too lost relatives. Just found two more missing branches this week, in fact. I don't have the patience to sit back and wait for them to find me, and they are always so very glad to hear from me. Veromi shows deceased names (I think when there was a trust involved), and in this case I think I saw Julius, possibly at 108 years old! Maybe he is alive, hard to say, but his name is there so you know who his family members are/were. In this case, with an unusual surname, it was easy. If people's phone numbers are unlisted, I try their churches, and that's how I got in touch with someone this week. The churches have to respect privacy laws, but generally will pass on contact information to their members, if there are surviving relatives who are still church members and you are pleasant when you explain why. Hope that helps. 3. Lily, I checked for your grandfather on the LDS Family Search website which has images of Ohio death certificates from 1908 through 1953. I am sending to your email address as an attachment the death record for Frank Theodore Starynschuk, who died at the Cleveland State Hospital on 29 Oct 1945. The informant was Katie Starynschuk, who I believe was your grandmother. Frank Theodore was buried in St. Peter & Paul Cemetery in Parma, according to the death certificate. I'll leave it to others to advise you on the possibility of finding info from the cemetery. I am emailing this cert and one other for a baby born to Julia Starynchak Vana, who I believe would be your anunt to the email address nezars@aloola.sy. If this is not correct, please send an email to the address below. You might be able to find more obits with the alternate spelling above. Wally Huskonen, CG whuskonen@roadrunner.com

    2. Thank you so much. I had a few things, but most has been lost. I don't believe I ever had this obituary. I have heard that my grandmother lived in Conneticut also, and I have heard rumors of Pennsylvania. I had always thought my grandfather died in the 1920's. I found out though, that he died in a State Hospital. I would give anything to know why he was committed there in 1929, but there is no one who can or will give me the information. I am so grateful that you took the time to send me that obituary. Thank you! **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here. 2. If there is anyone who remembers the Katie or Theodor Starynchak family (my grandparents) They lived on Altoona Rd in Brooklyn -across the alley from Deaconess Hospital. Before that, on various streets in the Tremont area. I have searched for many years for information regarding any relatives. I know some family names are Hirniak, Klatka, Klepacz, Molodec, and others, but I cannot seem to find any real connections to my family. Also, if anyone please, might have a photograph of Steve (Chip) Starynchak, (my dad). He used to go to Morgana Softball field a lot to watch games. If any of these names are familiar to anyone, please let me know. Many thanks! **************It's only a deal if it's where you want to go. Find your travel deal here.
