If you go to http://recorder.cuyahogacounty.us/ and go into seach database, general search and then change the dates to say 1860-1920 you'll see that in 1905 Leyshon Senior owned property with his wife Mary on Broadway. You can also download a copy of the deed and there is an earlier property he owned. In 1875 Leyshon Jr. and his wife Elizabeth sold property his father Leyshon. I would also as the archives for his will. 2. Hi Roger: I know that you asked about City Directories, but I thought I'd offer this instead. The Cuyahoga County archive has deaths in Cuyahoga County from 1840-1908. I would write to them and ask if they could check for your Leyshon Thomas after 1884. Their email address is: archive@cuyahogacounty.us There is no charge for them to look for this and to send you a copy of the death record if they find one. Be sure to send along your mailing address. Good luck. 3. There appears to be a Ohio death certificate for his wife, listed as Mary Jane Thomas, born in 1855, widow of Leyshon Thomas, and daughter of Thomas Gaynor Fitz Simmons at http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html?datestamp=1188967098937#searchType=standard;givenName=lyson;p=1;collectionId=700227;surname=thomas If you have problems, e-mail me directly and I'll save a copy of the image and will send it to you. The death certificate lists her place of burial, which is difficult to read but could possibly be Lake View Cemetery. They have a website at http://www.lakeviewcemetery.com/genealogy.html. You might try writing to them to see if Leyshon was buried there too. The Cleveland Necrology File has a transcription of her obituary at http://dxsrv4.cpl.org/WebZ/QUERY?sessionid=01-3538-1226039767 Nancy You may have to register to use this site, but there's no fee to do so. 1. [OHCUYAHO] Scranton Road Address and Nearby Churches/Pastors
    2. Jean Lesny
    3. #1 -- I am researching the marriage of May Simpson and Charles D. Kinney. They were married on 3 June 1901 in Cuyahoga County. (I have their marriage license application and return). The application stated that Rev. Hall of Brooklyn was going to perform the ceremony, but a Rev. J.D. Jones is the one who filed out the marriage Return. I cannot locate these priests on the list of pastors on the rootsweb site. How can I find out what church they were with? I would like to see if they have any records regarding the marriage and if anything was submitted to them regarding her death. (She did not die in Ohio.) #2 -- with regard to May Simpson, again, at the time of her marriage on 3 June 1901, she was living at 1285 Scranton Avenue in Cleveland. Does the 1901 city directory have the "pink pages." This house was located on the current site of Metro Hospital's parking garage. I would like to see if I can find out if the house was a "boarding" house, or "institution" of some sort. It was located one block from the Jones Home for Friendless Children, where May grew up. Could the two residences be linked in some way? Recent research has revealed that May might have had a baby before getting married, so, could this have been a home for unwed mothers? Any help or direction would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Jean "To get back one's youth, one has merely to repeat one's follies."          --from The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde

And forget the part about avowing aliegence to anyone, that was not a requirement. Also forget about the King of England as up until about 1820 people traveled feely to the US and simply walked off the ship at the dock and into the US, no inspection required. So the reason you are not finding him could be: 1) a manifest that is difficult to read and the name has been mis-transcribed, 2) the manifest for his ship has not been transcribed at all or.. his page has been missed by transcribers.... or 3) the family story is simply a story... So the question ... who was this person and what was his birth year? He had been a Methodist missionary in Liberia, and I have some artifacts that have come down in the family but can't find him on any ships lists. He was a US citizen. Is this why? I have read RR workers were exempt from war duty during CW. Assuming this was true & he started working for RR a short time before the yard accident durin the CW, where would there be a record of his exemption? Luck for me, his wife(my great grandmother) had my Grandmother in her belly when he was killed! I read a book about this part of the Civil War a long long time ago before I knew my 2Xggf was a RR man during this period. There would be "accident" caused by troops putting logs (trees*G*) on the tracks and hold ups as Federal or Confederate troops tried to get transport (or goods) Being a RR worker in the CW was not a pass by any means.
