I'm asking for any help or ideas that may get me past my greatest brick wall. Hiram Bartholomew was born in 2 March 1842 (or there about) in Berea, OH. His parents, to my knowledge, were Stephen Bartholomew and Hannah Grandy (Grande). They married in Cuyahoga County in 1841. Hiram had a brother Chauncey and possibly a sister Mary. According to his obituary his mother died when he was five (abt. 1847) and his father died when he was nine (abt. 1851). I cannot find Hiram or any of this family in the1850 census. I know nothing about his parents' parents, beyond that his grandfather Bartholomew may have lived in Bradford, PA (I don't know a given name for him). Hiram is in Cuyahoga County in 1860 living with a Spencer family. He serves in the Civil War in the 23rd Regiment from Ohio. I even have letters he wrote to the Spencers, however, it is never clear if they are family or just a family who took him in. Eventually he moves out of the area. I would like to know what happened to his parents and who their parents were. I'm not sure where they died, but since he is still in Cuyahoga County in 1860 I have thought they may have died there. I'm guessing they may not have tombstones. I've had them search the death records at the Archives, but have not found anything yet. Not living in the area, I think I have exhausted the resources available to me and would like to know what other options there maybe or if anyone has run across these names before. Thanks in advance. Hi Everyone, Due to the recent movement of Hurricane Ike moving through Ohio on Sunday leaving destruction everywhere, Ike also decided to leave its mark on Woodland Cemetery. I had visited Woodland Cemetery last night and I cannot believe the destruction the high winds had left on the cemetery. After talking to Mr. Mitchell, Manager for the City of Cleveland Cemeteries, today regarding the condition of Woodland Cemetery, the city had decided that the cemetery is unsafe to visitors right now. For the public safety, it has been decided to postpone the clean up while the city departments come into the cemetery to assess all the damage, inspect all the trees for additional loose/down limbs, and clean up the cemetery. Many people had been killed by loose tree limbs throughout the state recently and we all feel that we would rather protect the public then someone getting hurt. Therefore, Woodland Cemetery is going to be temporarily closed to the public while the city does what it needs to do to ensure the public is safe in the cemetery. The City of Cleveland wants nothing more then to ensure the safety of the public and from what I have seen, I agree. For those of you who would like to come and assist with a fall clean up, we would appreciate it if you would come to Highland Park Cemetery to help clean up one of the many veteran sections at 10:00am or after. Highland Park Cemetery is located at 21400 Chagrin Boulevard (216.348.7210). Please bring your shovels since many of the veteran headstones are being overgrown by grass. If you should have any questions, please feel free to call me. We thank you for your help, cooperation and understanding. Hi Laura Thanks for this. I have written to them straight away. Since I posted the original request I have found a transcript of the 1900 directory on line and he is still there at the age of 86. He is not in the census though, but it wouldn't be the first time he avoided enumeration. Does anyone on the list know where I could ask for a lookup in the Cleveland City Directories 1880-1890 please? I am in England, so ordering films from the LDS, which has them all, would take upwards of three months. I am trying to find the death of my ggg grandfather Leyshon Thomas. He emigrated to NY from Wales in 1867 with his family and settled in Syracuse. They are all in the 1870 Syracuse census running a saloon. By 1880 they are scattered all over the NE US. Leyshon junior, his son, moved to Norristown PA in c1875-8 and ran The West End Hotel and Restaurant there. Leyshon senior revisited the UK and arrived back in Castle Garden on 6th September 1879, describing himself as a hotel keeper. However, he does not appear in the June 1880 census. I had assumed he had died sometime in that short period, until I discovered his marriage to Jennie Simmons in July 1880 (IGI) and the birth of a child to them in 1884, both in Cuyahoga. At this time Jennie is 28, and Leyshon says he is 74 - actually only 70 but he was always very innacurate with his age. Leyshon is not around in the 1900 census, and given his age I would assume his wandering days were over, so I would like to know if he appears in the Cleveland Directories for the period, and if so when he disappears.
