Is there a place on line to search for marriage records in Ohio? I'm trying to find confirmation of marriage of Andro (Andrew) Fill to Maria (Mary) Horbal on 11 Aug 1909. We believe Maria's (Mary) DOB to be 12 Jun 1892. Although we know they lived in Cleveland and were Russian Orthodox (St. Theodosius), we have been unable to find marriage records in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Maria is believed to have been a US Citizen who was born in Janesville or Hazelton or Wilkes Barre, PA but went back to Galicia with her parents when she was a small infant and did not return to the US until she was approximately 16 years old. We hit this marriage dead end several years ago are now attempting, again, to find the marriage records. Any help would be appreciated. Ellyn Fill Marietta, GA

Hi: Just a note to let you know of something interesting for those who have Newburgh Hts. or Cuyahoga Hts. relatives. The Cuyahoga Heights Historical Committee has a new room in the Cuyahoga Heights Village Hall (rear entrance) where they have posted many photos and historical information. They will be open on the first Saturday of November and December from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. Since my husband hails from Cuyahoga Heights I found it very interesting. They have done an impressive job of displaying the many photos that either belong to them or that have been donated and/or scanned. Feel free to stop by and take a look. Also, a special note for Sandy Rozhon: Sandy, we had corresponded before about a relative of yours who died in Sunny's Pond. In this room are Cuyahoga Heights fire department record books and when talking to the people there, they said that they believe that there is mention in those record books about the drowning of the youngster in Sunny's Pond. I didn't have time to look at the books, but you might want to check that out for yourself. Luke Hansford and Deborah Stone Hansford moved from Portland, Dorset, England to Cleveland sometime between 1866 and 1873 along with their children: 1. Sarah Swaffield Hansford (born 6 Nov 1859, Portland, Dorset, England) - married Daniel Hist in Cleveland some time after 1880, and died 12 July 1926 in Cleveland. 2. Mary Jane Hansford (born 1861, Portland, Dorset, England) 3. Keziah Hansford (born 3 May 1864, Portland, Dorset, England) - married unknown Christian name male Grover sometime after 1880 in Ohio, died 17 March 1917 at Willoughby, Lake Co, Ohio. Luke and Deborah had a daughter Allice Hansford in 1873 in Cleveland. (She is known as Emma Hansford on the 1900 US census.) Luke appears in the 1880 United States Census living with his wife and children in Cleveland, Cuyahoga, Ohio. He is 48 and a Brick Mason. The children with them are Alice, Mary, Sarah and Keziah. At a similar time to Luke and Deborah Hansford moving to Ohio, another Hansford family member moved and settled in Fairfield, Butler, Ohio. This was Joseph James Hansford who married Alice C. (surname unknown) - I am not sure if they married before he left Portland, Dorset or in Ohio. He died 21 Nov 1929 in Fairfield. If anyone can help me with information on these families and their descendants I would appreciate it. I don't know the marriage details and grand-children of any of these. Looking forward to listers help. Stephen Hansford Adelaide Australia

Sabrina: Though the Hiram Bartholomew of Ashtabula County may not be an exact match to yours, here are some points to ponder. Whenever I have such brick walls, I look at all the male child names within a family as they are easiest to track in the US Census. Generally I begin with the most unusual or uncommon baptismal name, in your case Chauncey. Include Soundex searches for surnames. Then I begin a search of each of those names, noting census years, counties and states. What I seek is some sort of migration pattern for the family and sibling names. Even if the birth years do not match, many baptismal names survived among related family members depending on relationships and ethnic practices. In doing so with your BARTHOLMEW names, I have determined the following from reasonable assumption thus some possible error. Your BARTHOLOMEW line could have been Dutch or Irish. If Dutch, look to Philadelphia for immigrant ancestor, possibly associated with a Jacob Bartholomew, born 1678 Rotterdam, Holland, died 1713 Middleburgh New York. If Irish, look to New York and Connecticut as possible first settlements of immigrant ancestor. Family names closely associated with military service, including garrison at West Point and Civil War soldiers of New York and Ohio. May be connected to the HARPER family who founded Harpersfield, Delaware County, NY and Harpersfield, Ashtabula County, OH. Possible family migrations indicated from NY to Ashtabula, Cuyahoga, Medina and Portage counties of Ohio, then perhaps to MI and IL. Hope this helps Dennis ----- Original Message ----- From: <ohcuyaho-request@rootsweb.com> To: <ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com> Sent: Friday, September 26, 2008 3:01 AM Subject: OHCUYAHO Digest, Vol 3, Issue 183 > > > Today's Topics: > > 1. You probably know about View-Master, the 3D picture toy with the round reels and viewer to watch them with. They have been around in one form or another since the 1938. What is less well known is that around 1940 the company issued three reels of cemetery scenes which were used for marketing and not sold to the general public. The first two reels have scenes I have identified as taken in Emlawn Cemetery in a small town near Buffalo New York. Now I am trying to find where the scenes on the third reel were taken. Since they include scenes of a chapel exterior and interior and the business office at the time, there is hope. Here is a link to a pdf document on what I know about these reels: http://www.drivehq.com/file/df.aspx/publish/alwooden/Auctions/View_Master_Emlawn_Draft5.pdf If you have any further information on these reels, please let me know. Also, I am a collector of View-Master items, so if you have anything sold by or related to the company that you would like to turn into cash, email me. Al Woodcock Cleveland, Ohio
If they were farmers, as many were, check the neighboring states such as Indiana and Michigan, as many moved on to more fertile fields. If you are using Ancestry, try the Soundex setting for the name as census takers are notorious for bad spellings. Also many early Ohio settlers came from Connecticut so check there for all BARTHOLOMEW names, also with Soundex. PS: There is a Hiram, about the same age, with father Lorenzo, in Ashtabula County, Ohio in time frame censuses. That Mary (from NY) does not fit with my family. My Mary, if one existed, would have been born between 1841 to 1847 or so. Dennis, I've looked into that Hiram before and it is not a match. I actually know a lot about him past the Civil War. I'm just stuck on his parents. Since I know he was born in the Cleveland area and lived there until about 1870 it would make some sense for his parents to have died there, but I really know nothing about them at all besides names and possible death years.
