    1. [OHCUYAHO] Protestant Church Records
    2. Jean Lesny
    3. I've conducted a lot of research here in Cleveland, and the Cleveland Catholic Diocese has been a wonderful source for much information, but where do I go to find out about my Protestant relatives? My g-g-grandmother and her siblings were placed in the Jones' Home in 1891. The Jones Home only took Protestant children, so I'm trying to determine what Protestant churches were around the area in 1891 (and before -- do Protestants practice baptism?) I'm hoping to find more information on the childrens' parents' deaths, and hoping church records might help. The parents (Mark SIMPSON and Mary JARVIS) lived on Hanover Street in February 1891 and then on Washington Street in April 1891 (the date of the mother's death). (I think this is the west bank of the Flats). Any ideas? Thanks, Jean from Olmsted Falls

    1. Re: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909
    2. Good morning Ellyn, You may also want to write to St. Theodosius' cemetery for all information they have in their records. The address and telephone number is on my website. Thank you for the offer of the 1946 50th Golden Anniversary book. I am in the process of putting its information on Cleveland's Southside and that site has a search engine where one can look for names. We have also uploaded various photos from the book and will be putting more pictures in the future. When you write St. Theodosius about your husband's "christening" record ask for his Baptismal/Confirmation record. Greek (Byzantine) Catholics and Orthodox children are baptized and confirmed at the same time. In some cases, the parents' and godparents' religious and personal information is added to the record to show that they "qualify" to hold the position they are seeking. Some Records of Death also show more personal information than you would expect, especially if the person was married. As to the relative who was a Russian Orthodox priest, you need to look to Greek Catholic churches in the area where he may have practiced. In Pennsylvania especially, there was a movement towards Orthodoxy from the Greek Catholic religion in the early 1900s. That relative was very likely a Greek Catholic priest who defected. Again, go to my website for information and links on this movement. (The St. Theodosius page) It is not unusual for some immigrants to have no marriage license in the early 1900s. I have seen it in researching persons who belonged to the Greek Catholic and Orthodox religions. I don't know if they did not think a license was necessary and/or did not know such a thing existed or the priest failed to register the marriage once he officiated it. A distant relative of mine was married in New York State in 1906, at the home of a cousin who came over earlier. It took me almost 20 years to find the marriage record and it came from a Greek Catholic church. They only stayed in New York for less than a month (so the Banns could be read in church) and then moved to the coalmines of Southwest Pennsylvania and then ultimately Cleveland. If I assumed that there would be a civil document on their marriage I would be still looking because there isn't anything. Write to me off forum if I could be of any help. I am especially interested in the St. Theodosius choir director who was in your family. He might be your "wild card" when it comes to getting church records! 3. Thanks for the tidbit about mailing with a donation; I have reached out to them in the past but didn't receive an answer but I believe it was via e-mail. I will definitely try this again and do the mail and donation. It's nice to know they are a 'friendlier' church regarding getting information. I'd like to get my husband's christening certificate as well; he was christened there in the early 1950's and we have a picture but no documentation. By the way, I do have a paper copy of the 50th Golden Anniversary book done by St. Theodosius in 1946. I'll be glad to try to find references in here for anyone that is interested. Unfortunately there is no index and the pages are very yellowed. One of these days I'll scan it and you can direct me where to best donate the scanned copies; it's about 75 pages or so. One of my husband's uncles was the choir director there at one time. I appreciate everyone's suggestions and help; you have all be great. 3. Yes, thanks. That is one of the 3 cities that I have for her from different records. I knew Steve Fill and he confirmed that he did not know that birth city 'for certain'. PA records are kept by county and I've searched several of them; unfortunately I bumped into lots of 'records burned' situations. I have not revisited the PA locations in several years. -----Original Message----- From: ohcuyaho-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohcuyaho-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of Susan Sent: Monday, October 06, 2008 1:40 AM To: ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909 >From her death certificate - her birth date 14 Nov 1892 Hazelton, Pennsylvania informant was Stephen Fill Susan http://search.labs.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable ;c=700227 --- On Sun, 10/5/08, Ellyn <ellynf@mindspring.com> wrote: From: Ellyn <ellynf@mindspring.com> Subject: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909 To: ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, October 5, 2008, 3:25 PM Is there a place on line to search for marriage records in Ohio? 3. I do not know that the 1910 Township census is our Andy but I do know he used that name and he had been in the US since 1906 and that he went directly to Ohio from New York as he had at least 1 older brother there at that time. His brother and/or brothers worked in the Steel Mills and the family legend is that Andy hated the steel mills so the railroad could be an alternate job. I agree that it bugs me that I can't find her in 1910. Pennsylvania is my wild card for the marriage as Mary/Maria's age is different on every document I find and range is 3-5 years. She could have been under age 16; I also believe she may have a brother or uncle who was a Russian Orthodox priest in PA and he could have married them in PA. I believe her parents are Eva Frensko (spelling could be one of several different ways) and Theodor Horbal (that name came from her death certificate). I believe her sibs are Andrew, Teckla and Bogdan but I don't know where I got those names from. I am in the process of going back through all these names/records and doing better source documentation. I have been unable to find passenger lists for her going back and forth but the name could be so many variations. -----Original Message----- From: ohcuyaho-bounces@rootsweb.com [mailto:ohcuyaho-bounces@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of the cohens Sent: Monday, October 06, 2008 1:30 AM To: ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com Subject: Re: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909 That 1910 Cleveland Township census bothers me. What make you sure it is him, as opposed to one of many other Andrew Fill's, when the age isn't even recorded (as far as I could tell)? And how do you know they didn't meet and get married in, say, New York? It sounds good to write the church, but I'd continue to check other scenarios out as well. Did you find a passenger list for her return to the U.S.? Do you know if she came alone or with her family? Names of her parents if she came with them? If she was here in 1910, we should be able to find her, and that's bugging me, not finding her then if she was here. Could have been with relatives while hubby was in that camp, if that was him. On Robert Henry Robertson's death certificate of 1925 his occupation is given as Stone Cutter, but his employer is Ballantine Company, Edinburgh, Scotland. Am intrigued by an Edinburgh Company employing men in Ohio Kay

I'm trying to find confirmation of marriage of Andro (Andrew) Fill to Maria (Mary) Horbal on 11 Aug 1909. We believe Maria's (Mary) DOB to be 12 Jun 1892. Although we know they lived in Cleveland and were Russian Orthodox (St. Theodosius), we have been unable to find marriage records in Ohio or Pennsylvania. Maria is believed to have been a US Citizen who was born in Janesville or Hazelton or Wilkes Barre, PA but went back to Galicia with her parents when she was a small infant and did not return to the US until she was approximately 16 years old. We hit this marriage dead end several years ago are now attempting, again, to find the marriage records. Any help would be appreciated. 3. That 1910 Cleveland Township census bothers me. 1. Re: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909
    2. Write to St. Theodosius here in Cleveland. http://www.sttheodosius.org/contact.html Ask if there is any marriage information listed in the church's early records (after 1908) for the person you are asking about. The last name has been changed and whomever answers your email may be able to give you the original name of the person you are looking for. Other records that can be searched are of course a marriage record, but also baptismal/confirmation listings for any children before 1930. St. Theodosius had a very large parishioner base in the early 1900s and the search may be hard for the church to do. Remember to ask how much a search will cost. If an email does not get you a response, send a letter with a donation or a notation on how much a search will cost. St. Theodosius is one of the friendlier churches when it comes to getting information on an individual. Requests for information can take a while, so be patient, especially with holydays fast approaching. 3. Andro (Andrew) Fill came to US via Trieste in January 1906 on Francesca when he was 19. Name on manifest is Andreas Ful (with an accent over the 'u') or Fyl, or Fyil. Handwriting is very difficult to read. 1930 census shows age at first marriage as 23 which tracks with the DOB I have for him of 10 Dec 1886. I tried searching for passenger lists for clues about them at http://findmypast.com as they would most likely have been on ships that stopped over in England, and I had poor luck there. The only thing that stood out for me that was someone who was a Fill born about 1851 who went to Canada in 1893 via Liverpool: FILL Anders 1851 M 1893 Liverpool Canada Quebec Also, I don't recall you saying (I may have missed it) when you think they got married or what censuses you have on them and where. That info would help us. The 1910 and 1930 censuses have information about the age or year of marriage that would help. 3. Ellyn,  Ando didn't get here until 1906, he came in through New York. In 1920 his daughter is 9 so it might be safe to say he met his wife and married in PA and then came through to Ohio. Since he has two brothers Peter and Hritz (harry) and neither of them come up they may have married before they came to the U.S. both their wives were also from Galicia Cindy --- On Sun, 10/5/08, Ellyn <ellynf@mindspring.com> wrote: From: Ellyn <ellynf@mindspring.com> Subject: [OHCUYAHO] Marriage Records: Fill/Horbal 1909 To: ohcuyaho@rootsweb.com Date: Sunday, October 5, 2008, 3:25 PM Is there a place on line to search for marriage records in Ohio?
