It was not necessarily in Ohio, but in the mountains en route to or from there to or from the Oil fields in Pennsylvania. Maybe I have the decades mixed up, it sounded a bit strange. I don't have an exact year, was guessing based on other facts, which would make it after 1870. Maybe they were just needlessly afraid. Have not been able to go further back with this as we don't have the names of William B. LICHTIG's parents yet, and they would be the adults involved. I got his marriage license, and it sadly had no names of parents on it. But, thank you for that great explanation of how people chose a mode of travel. Whether or not they continued by boat further inland, families could travel by covered wagon. 3. Of course once the Erie canal (1825) and the Wellend Canal (1829) this would have been the prefered (faster) method of travel.  By the 1820s Ohio towns and villages were connected by rail and by the 1850s interstate rail was in use and this would have been faster than traveling on oft times muddy "roads" or by canal.   http://memory.loc.gov/cgi-bin/query/D?gmd:13:./temp/~ammem_taCF::   And I know that when my ancestors came from Croatia and from Belgium that a rail ticket to their destination was purchased in Europe, this was between 1891 and 1905 (Croatia) and in 1907 (Belgium) Robert Jerin Click below to see my May 2009 Croatia tour  http://www.kollander-travel.com/media/jerincroatia09.pdf --- On Sat, 11/29/08, harvieandliz <hebarker@shaw.ca> wrote: From: harvieandliz <hebarker@shaw.ca> Subject: [OHCUYAHO] how did folks arrive at Ohio from Britain 1850s? 3. Once reaching America through one of the many ports of Baltimore or NYC, many traveled by wagon to OH and points beyond. Some even took the trip on foot. However, many also would travel as far as Buffalo, NY and then depart from there via Lake Erie. Buffalo, NY, at the time, was considered one of the gateways to the west for many years in the mid-1800's. The Erie Canal terminus was located in Buffalo, NY and it was a major port in our country at the time. the cohens wrote: > Obviously from England to America by boat. 3. A search at http://freebmd.org.uk yielded a few possible births for which you could order records for more information. The dates are : Registered Apr-May-Jun 1852 Clements Phoebe District: Faversham Vol: 2a Page: 495 Registered Apr-May-Jun 1853 Clements Phoebe W District: Bromwich Vol: 6b Page: 523 I would make sure John and Mary are not in the British Census for 1861 before hunting for them here, unless you know for sure they arrived before 1860. There is a Maria Elizabeth at freebmd in 1856, who may not be yours: Registered July-Aug-Sep 1856 Clements Maria Elizabeth District: Bethnal Green Vol: 1c Pg: 248 And many Mary's, Elizabeths, and Edward's, but you didn't say if these latter were likely to be born in the UK or here, so I'll let you check freeBMD for other entries yourself. Just be sure to click on "Search FreeBMD" instead of filling in the boxes in the advertizement. 1. [OHCUYAHO] Book recommendation
    2. Hello everyone, Yesterday, I was at the Main Cleveland Library, History Department. On a table someone had left a book that peaked my interest. It is titled "Psychic Roots--Serendipity & Intuition in Genealogy" by Henry Z. Jones, Jr. What a strange title. I checked the book out and am now trying to read it. Trying is not a bad thing in this case. Its the remembering that is holding me from getting through the book. I would like to recommend this book to everyone as a light read. It is written by a genealogist and he narrates instances from others on how they found a long lost relative, a piece of information, etc. without really looking for them or it. The book is about those "AHA!" moments where one can offer no explanation on how or why information was found or (another example) how someone has gone into an unknown cemetery and walked right to an ancestor's gravesite This is not a "how to do anything and everything connected with genealogy" book but a book that offers hope to those of us who have those brick walls or elusive relatives who refuse to be found. It reinforces the "AHA!" moment for all of us and says, "Yes, that moment is alive and well; we just have to wait and recognize it when it happens" The book can be ordered from the Cleveland Public Library from this link: http://search2.clevnet.org/web2/tramp2.exe/log_in/guest?SETTING_KEY=CLEVNET (Type in the title in the lower section) Have a great weekend. Pat

Hayes Presidential Center, Obituraries Hello Fellow Reasearchers, I want to point out that although a researcher might not have family in the area covered by the obituaries at the center, it should still be considered while looking because I've found people mentioned that had no connection with counties they have on the list. For instance when sending for HOGAN information related to the Erie County area I received an article that contained news from Cleveland and sited death news from Schenectady N.Y., Jewett, Harrison, Ohio and Painesville, Lake, Ohio. None of these places including Cuyahoga are listed as in the counties that the center reports having obituaries from. The article not only tells me the names of these deceased but the manner in which they died. All were listed in the Sandusky Register in 1924. It maybe unlikely that your surname will be found but it's worth the look.
