Does anyone have or had any knowledge of EDWARD PAUL BASTIAN who was born April 18, 1916, son of Paul and Florence Corriigan Bastian? They lived in Cleveland. He is a first cousin, probably still alive since I have not been able to find a death notice including the SSI index. He went to Lincoln High School but they have not been able to find him for reunions etc. I would love to find him. Ruth Bastian arbyjones2@aol.com

Are the the clippings too old and brittle to be scanned? Nancy L. Yes to school records. Somehow he would have had to prove his age when entering school or if moving, his age and grade level at the new school. Jackie

I recently requested my father's Ohio birth certificate from Columbus, after learning it was not on file in Cleveland. He was born in 1910. Apparently, no birth certificate exists for him and he is now deceased. I called the Department of Health in Columbus and was told that often when a baby was delivered by a midwife, she would give the birth record to the parents to file. Since they figured they had a copy, they often would forget or neglect to file it with the State. (Midwives were not required to keep records.) My father must have provided some record of his birth because he was collecting Social Security. Social Security, I believe, was instituted in 1938. So, whoever suggested finding baptism records was likely correct. Obviously, that's a little easier to find out if you know where the relative was living at the time of birth. Also, I think Columbus told me that if my father had still been living, he could have filed with the State to obtain a delayed birth certificate. I'm wondering if old school records, if they exist, might contain birth information. Nancy L.
Hello, The birth and death records from 1867 to 1908 are spotty at best. Many people did corrected and omitted birth records in Lake County in 1942 and 1943. I am wondering what the law was or incentive that made them do it then. Perhaps it was social security applications really beginning then. The proofs went before the judge of probate and the resulting certificate was recorded in a Civil Docket. In Lake County they are in about 13 volumes (now stored elsewhere with microfilm at Morley Library), specifically for omitted and corrected births. This is still being done today for current incorrect or missing birth certificates. The index is a card file mixed in with the index cards for the old probate births. Sorry my experience is not in Cuyahoga County, but it is likely similar. Therese Spellacy at Probate would probably know. Cynthia in Lake County
I have the census records from ancestry.com. If anyone wants me to do a quick search, or you can't find a specific person, please let me know. I have been responding to people individually from the list who were researching their family, and have provided a lot of information, only to recently not have any response from the inquirer or to receive a blocked message response. So I'm not going to research anymore unless I'm specifically asked. Doing a lot of work and having it end up in somebody's spam mail is not worth my time. christiefox@prodigy.net

FIRST OF ALL LET ME SAY THANK YOU TO ALL WHO RESPONDED TO MY POSTING. I AM SORRY BUT WHEN I PUT THE YEAR RANGE IN FOR RUTH IT WAS 1930-1942 NOT 1920. I KNOW IT HAS TO BE BETWEEN THOSE YEARS BECAUSE SHE WAS IN THE 1930 CENSUS AND MY PARENTS WERE MARRIED IN 1942 AND MY MOTHER SAID THAT SHE HAD ALREADY PASSED AWAY. I DID WRITE ST. PAUL CHURCH BUT THEY HAVE NO RECORD OF EITHER CHARLES OR RUTH. ALSO I WROTE THE CUYAHOGA ARCHIVES AND THEY LOOKED IN THE FILES FROM 1850-1950 AND FOUND NOTHING. SO HERE IS WHAT I KNOW. THEY WERE MARRIED APRIL 5, 1909 I BELIEVE IT WAS IN TOLEDO, OHIO. THEN IN 1920 THEY SHOW UP ON THE CENSUS IN CLEVELAND AND CHARLES WAS THERE UNTIL HIS DEATH IN 1954. HE WAS BORN JAN. 27, 1884 IN CRESTLINE OHIO AND DIED AUG. 1955 IN CLEVELAND. SHE WAS BORN JAN. 9, 1879 IN AUGLAIZE, MOLTON TOWNSHIP, OHIO. I HAVE BEEN IN CONTACT WITH A FEW OF RUTH'S DISTANT RELATIVES BUT LIKE ME THEY KNOW NOTHING. SO IF ANYONE CAN HELP ME I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE IT I AM UP AGAINST A BRICK WALL AND DO NOT KNOW WHERE TO TURN NEXT. Bette, My father was 36 yrs. old when he filed for a Special Birth Certificate so he could apply for a social security card. His mother had to file an affidavid to verify his date of birth. His birth was registered in 1943, but it doesn't show up in the regular birth indexes in Kentucky. Ohio may have the same system. You might contact the Ohio Dept. of Vital Statistics and ask about special/delayed birth certificates. You might also check with the Cleveland area Health Dept. to determine if they might have copies of these types of birth registrations. Bette, I have a great aunt born in PA in the late 1910's and she applied for a "delayed" birth certificate in 1942. I don't know how they went about doing that. So, I have 2 different delayed birth certificates, last names spelled differently and it says that "proof" was a baptismal record. Did you go to the archives and do a search yourself? Karen
I only seen 2 Ruth KELLER's at www.ohiohistory.org and they died in Crawford and Perry County. You may want to check with them since the on-line index is only good through 1937 and they have later years there. You may want to ask for a census look up in 1920 & 1930 to determine if she was still alive then. I can do a 1920 look-up, but I would need Charles' age and place of birth, there are actually quite a few in Cleveland! Karen
Hello Karen... Thank you for your message. To answer your question "Did you go to the archives and do a search yourself?" No, my distance away from Cuyahoga County is in excess of 600 miles therefore I am unable, at least at present, from doing the necessary research on foot." He is likely the same man as listed in an early record as George H. Detmer (1801-1883) who arrived from Germany in the USA in 1835. Check the records of the Early Settlers Association. I am interested in him for my book, HISTORY OF THE CLEVELAND GERMANS.Any info you care to share with me? Being Catholic, and living on Lake Street, he would have attended St. Mary's of the Flatz until the first German Catholic church, St. Peter's was forme din the 1840s. germanbob@ameritech.net Marilyn Detmer <Auntie1m@comcast.net> wrote:I am looking for information on a Gerhard H. He was a tailor by traade. Could you see if there is any information on them in the Archives. I have a feeling that her last name could be Brekman. They are burried at St. Joseph's. My grandmother had to do something similar. In order to apply for a "delayed" birth certificate so she could move to America from Canada, she brought in the family bible that recorded her birth, all of her school records, and her mother had to swear to it as well. All this information was actually typed onto the back of her birth certificate as well. This was in Canada, but America may have handled it likewise.
