I know that he had eight children from his first marriage over a 20 year span, was widowed four years before he married again. I don't know the age of his second wife, but she also had eight children. One of his sons married one of her daughters. So I'm guessing they were more or less the same age. They had two children together, who died in infancy. One source says his sons became prominent businessmen in Cleveland. I found an old Oberlin yearbook showing that several of her sons but none of his went there. Her sons were buried in a plot he bought 25 years before they were married but none of his family except the son who married in. In other words, lots of potential for differences between the two sets of children. There might have been good reason for just letting things slide for 20 years! But I'd sure like to know for sure when Moses died. Sandy, What you're suggesting makes sense if he died in 1850 and it took time to get his will probated--he had eight children, all of whom seem to have survived to adulthood--for the 1853 sale. But what about an 1870 sale? That's 20 years later. Or would the husband's name be put on the deed of a sale made by a widow? I just don't know how things were done in those days. Why is it more convenient? Cuyahogans: John and Josephine Epp were listed in the 1880 Federal Census of Cleveland. John was 28 years of age and Josephine 23 years. He is shown as native to Bavaria and she as born in PA. They have a 2 year-old son (Edwin) living with them. Do any of you have any supporting/expanding info on this Epp family? TIA Bob Epp, in VA
Does anyone out there own a copy of "Cleveland Newspaper Index to Marriages and Deaths (1818-1876)" I have a copy but I just moved and it's packed away somewhere. If someone owns this could they lookup Moses JEWETT for Doris.
Hello Everyone, Can someone on the list send the CCArchives email address to the list. I told Doris to email them (I know the email comes with a request sheet) and inquire if Moses JEWETT had a will but I can't find the email address, the one on the Cuyahoga County rootsweb list is old and hasn't worked in a long time. Sounds like the right man, since he was born in 1788 and would be 62 in 1850. How can I get access, at this distance, to the Necrology File to verify any other details that might be there? I went to familysearch.org and I see that someone has recorded the marriage of Moses and Adeline 31 March 1836 and I see that Jim Dresser must have some connection to Moses. Jim is a very nice guy and if you go to his site via familysearch.org he can give you the info he has. Hi Doris, I read through the property deeds online at the recorder's office and something struck me, your Moses Jewett is still selling land with his wife Adeline 14 July, 1870. They both sold land to Charles Jewett. I know it's your Moses because it records his wife as formerly Adeline Adams so I'm pretty sure your Moses died after 1870. Also 6 Sept. 1853 Moses and his wife Adeline sell land to the railroad. Adeline is also listed there as formerly Adeline Adams. I would consider Moses still alive in 1870. On the subject of Cuyahoga County Necrology Films, they are paid obituaries taken from local Cuyahoga County newspapers, mostly the Cleveland Press and Cleveland Plain Dealer. Several Genealogical Societies though through the years have recorded headstone information and that info was put on index cards and filmed with the obituaries. There would be no other information on a index card reading "Cemetery information" Necrology File Reel # 042. This is simply an index card with either headstone info or cemetery info such as the place of burial perhaps birth and death dates if it's on the headstone. Of course if it said Harvard Grove with a death date or Calvary Cemetery then it would give the researcher another source to check that would yeild further information. As listed in " Landowners from the 1874 Atlas of Cuyahoga County, Ohio" page 50 JEWETT C.P. Newburgh Township Lots 466. I have a small copy of this map if you'd like it. Please go to http://recorder.cuyahogacounty.us/ Go to search database, then general search Change the date box to 01/01/1850 and put in Jewett Moses, it will bring you up two early deeds for Moses, one to the Railroad and one to Charles Click on the number to the left and it'll bring you up a printable deed. You can then put in the other Jewett names. Looks like Charles has quite a few deeds and one is to Alvah.
