If you go to this URL, you'll see a map of Newburgh as it was in 1874. Follow the pink area to nearly it's lower edge to where it says STATE OF OHIO. To the right of those words, you'll see the property of C.P. Jewett. There may be others but that one popped out at me so I thought I'd point it out to you. http://www.clevelandmemory.org/titus/titus077.shtml Sandy On 14 Apr 2005 at 19:26, doriswaggoner@juno.com wrote: > > When was the town of Newburgh founded? Hello List Members, With the arrival of Spring and some glorious weather I am looking for someone with a camera and a little bit of spare time who would be willing & able to visit Monroe Cemetery in Cleveland for the purpose of taking some gravesite photos. I am unable to do this myself as I live some 600 miles from Cuyahoga County. If this assist appeals to anyone please write me off list for the details. Thanks for your consideration of this request. Rhodes was an excellent governor! If you were an Ohioan wanting a job, or a college education, or good parks and highways to use, James Rhodes was your governor. "Roving bands of antiwar students and nonstudents alike were smashing merchants' windows and confronting city police. The next day, Sunday, after the Kent ROTC building had been torched the night before... On Monday, May 4, at about noon, guardsmen confronted a small band of jeering, rock-throwing students as a larger group, gathering for an antiwar rally, looked on peacefully. The troops began retreating up a hill and then, without warning or apparent specific provocation (and probably without orders), turned and began firing. The volley of M-1 rifle rounds lasted an awful thirteen seconds. Four students were killed. Nine were wounded, two very seriously." So who is too blame? As one who came from that era and thought little of the "disrespectful and self destructive Frankfurt School inspired "if it feels good do it" fad", I would say the likes of Dr. Spock, the Frankfurt School etc. are to blame Robert Jerin CherylQ@aol.com wrote: Good morning, Having witnessed first hand those events, Kent State I mean, I think we do not need a repeat of that governorship. I seem to remember a republican governor in Ohio when I was younger. A man named Rhodes who sent the national guard onto the Kent State campus to kill college student protestors. Is that what you want? JC
From Kevin: "I seem to remember a republican governor in Ohio when I was younger. A man named Rhodes who sent the national guard onto the Kent State campus to kill college student protestors. Is that what you want? JC" I find it amazing how some twist and turn history to suit their own needs, I'm sure the governor had no intentions of killing anyone, Kent State it well documented.
I did make contact with someone who was researching the wife of Johann Georg BULLINGER, Catherine ROTHMAN. But she had no new information to share with me. We both agreed that the family died out in 1942 with the death of Johann Georg's grandson, Otto A BULLINGER. Otto A. did have two sons but they, and his first wife Mary WALTHER, preceded him in death, his sons in 1906 and 1916 followed by his wife in 1917. I did send a email message to the historical society who are the present owners of the stone lions called the Bullinger Lions. They have not replied so in the coming week I will try to call and speak with someone who might know something about the family. Thanks for asking Ernie Kuemmerer
When was the town of Newburgh founded? I know it was before 1828, as I have an ancestor born there then. But how much before? What kind of a community was it around that time? How large in 1828? Was there a school for young women there in the 1830s or 1840s run by a Mr. Whipple, who by about 1850 was on the faculty at Oberlin? My ancestor was Eunice Jewett. Her parents were Moses and Eunice Jewett and lived on Miles Ave in Newburgh. After her mother died in 1832, her father remarried Adeline Adams in 1836. Her father seems to have died in 1850 and her stepmother continued to live on Miles Ave. My ancestor moved away but one of her brothers, C. P. Jewett, lived at another address on Miles Ave. He married a stepsister, also named Adeline Adams. All three lived very long lives and were buried from the Miles Ave addresses. So there must have been some kind of social stability in the area, I presume. What can someone tell me about this community? Thanks, Doris Waggoner Seattle

Hello: I don't know when the Newburgh you are speaking of was founded. However, I am familiar with what is now Newburgh Heights and also where Miles Avenue is. Early on, a large area on the southeast side of the Cuyahoga River was called Newburgh. Miles Avenue had beautiful, large homes, and it was a lovely area. Unfortunately, today the neighborhood is no longer like it was. Most of the people who owned those beautiful homes moved out to the suburbs, and many of the homes were then purchased by absentee landlords. It is no longer an area where I'd feel safe. One part of what was Newburgh became Newburgh Heights. It is a small village. Its boundaries, roughly, are the Harvard-Denison Bridge on the west, East 49th Street on the east, Fleet Avenue on the north, and Harvard Avenue on the South. This area is about 2 miles northwest of Miles Avenue. Newburgh Heights doesn't have its own school system, and the students there attend Cleveland Public Schools, as do the students on Miles Avenue, which is a part of the city of Cleveland. Newburgh Heights does have its own police, fire, and mayor, though. Good luck in your searching! Lorene of Cleveland.
Have you come up with anything new since we last communicated? German Bob in Cleveland EKuemmerer@aol.com wrote: I am new to the list. I am researching two of my greatgreatUncles, brothers, who emigrated from the village of Ingersheim Wuerttemberg Germany to Berea/Cleveland Ohio in 1854 and 1865. This is what I know about them: Johann Georg BULLINGER was born in 1828 and emigrated in 1854. I don't know when he was married but his wife name was Catherine, surname unknown. She was born in 1843 IN Baden Germany. They had four children, Otto A. born 1863, Helene born 1867, Rosa born 1871 and Emma born 1877. Otto's wife was named Rose, surname unknown and they had a son Harry who was born in 1906. Emma was married to a Ernst Weber who was born in Germany in 1869, location unknown. The 1910 and 1920 census reports show that her mother, a widow at that time, was living with Emma and Ernst. The 1900 Cleveland City directory show that they were living at 22 Height. Georg Frederich BULLINGER at the age of 29 emigrated in 1865. A year later on April 15, 1866 in Cuyahoga county he married Rosina STRIGER who was just 16 years of age. From my research of census reports from 1870, 1880 and 1900 they had no children. I would be interesting in knowing if anyone on this list is also researching this surname.
