Hello: I had the same experience as you. However, someone told me to go onto the NARA website and just explore the links until I found the civil war pension file index. I did find it (although I cannot remember how) and was able to find a record of the number of the pension file for my ancestor. You can print out an image of that little record. Once I had that, this is the letter that NARA told me to send: FOIA/Privacy Act Officer VA Central Office Department of Veteran Affairs Director, Records Management Service (005E3) 810 Vermont Avenue, NW Washington, DC 20420 Dear Director: The National Archives has instructed me to write to you stating that I am requestion access to the pension file of my great grandfather, whose name was ________, the pension file designated as number ___________ (please see enclosed image). I am requesting that you conduct a BIRLS (Beneficiary Information and Records Locator System) search for the file and retrieve it for my use from the Federal Records Center where it is currently housed. Of course, I am willing to pay applicable fees, hopefully comparable to the $37 that I would have paid the National Archives for a complete record had the records been located there. Thank you very much for this information. Sincerely yours,....... I sent the above letter and received about a month later a post card saying that they were working on my request and would contact me again later. That was about 40 days ago. I haven't yet heard, but I am hopeful that I will, as it often takes 60-90 days, I am told. Hope this works for you. Lorene in Ohio

I live out of town but if it meant getting the pension file I'd make the drive. I was trying to get pension papers for a soldier who died in Washington, DC and was supposed to be buried in Arlington in Spanish American War section. My request to NARA came back stating the file existed but they did not have it. I was instructed to contact any VA office and ask them to request the file. I contacted the office closest to me (200 miles away) and it took a while but they were very helpful - got the file, copied the papers, and mailed them to me. Good luck
I went on to Ancestry and found the pension index card. David Vorce listed as Invalid has a pension application number given 17 Aug 1896, his widow filed 3 Nov 1923 and was given an application number. Both of them are also given certificate numbers and at the bottom of the index card is XC 2719583 I take it that's the pension number. I gave them that the first request but they came up with nothing. The only other thing I can think of is that David mustered in with the Co. K 2nd Reg't Heavy Art'y but was transferred to Co K 9th Reg't. I don't think I listed both reg't on my request but still the pension should be there for both David Vorce reg't right? I'm going to try one more time. Thanks to those for their input, Cindy --------------------------------- Discover Yahoo! Get on-the-go sports scores, stock quotes, news & more. Check it out!
Hello, Early 2004 I requested from NARA onlilne order the Civil War Service file and Pension file for a Lake County Veteran George VORCE. He enlisted in New York but resided in Lake County after his release, his widow requested his pension. NARA sent me a letter stating that this file was not in their possesion and that I should request it from Cuyahoga County Veterans Affairs. I did and heard nothing, then I called and tried to speak to someone there, someone who had no idea they had Civil War files. I waited and heard nothing. I have written 3 other letters none have been answered. Someone told me to request them again through NARA because if the researchers can't seem to locate them right away they tell you to look elsewhere, I did that and I just recieved an email from NARA saying they can't locate his file and will send me a letter, no doubt telling me to contact Cuyahoga County VA. Has anyone had to deal with the VA for this purpose? I live out of town but if it meant getting the pension file I'd make the drive. Another question why is a Lake County Veteran's file with Cuyahoga County and not with NARA or Lake County. Both he and his widow died and are buried in Lake County and she was a lifelong resident. Okay any insight would be helpful. Thanks, Cindy --------------------------------- Yahoo! Mail Stay connected, organized, and protected. Take the tour
Hi, Could someone with Ancestry please do a lookup for me. John SHARKEY is a Civil War soldier buried in Cuyahoga as such. When I requested to NARA for his muster roll papers they sent me four of them that listed him as a deserter. They said he went to Euclid on a leave of absence and did not return. Worst of all I paid $17.00 to find that out on four papers. Then yesterday I decided to go through the list of soldiers in his unit, K Company 2nd Reg. On the Civil War Soldiers and Sailors System I could go through over 3,000 names in his Regiment. Much to my surprise I found that there were two names listed as SHARKEY John and SHARKY John. I would venture to guess that when John came back from leave and reentered they spelled his surname incorrectly. Now I'll request John SHARKY from NARA and I bet I get more of his service record back...maybe just four more papers but at least he won't have been a deserter. Be warned before sending the $17.00 for the service record check all surnames for misspellings. You can do that by going through the regiment list on CWSS. John Curran is also spelled Curren and Currun and all listed in the same unit. Okay on to my request, John SHARKEY was not listed as a pensioner on the Cuyahoga County 1890 Veterans and Widows Pension census nor did I find him on Ancestory under John SHARKEY but would someone double check to see if he's not listed as SHARKY. His wife's name was Mary and he was living on the east side of Cleveland I think Euclid. I would appreciate the lookup. Thanks, Cindy --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Yahoo! Hello Cynthia, Once again I was intriqued by the program topic that you found for your meeting on Thursday. I am already searching for program topics for next year to present to the Lorain Co. Chapter. Could you please tell me how to contact Bill Haagen? Did your members enjoy his presentation? We often find that our members are always eager to find more ways to enchance their Internet genealogy and this program sure fits that bill. Thanks for any help, Cynthia. Irish naming patterns: First son after father's father Second son after mother's father Third son after father Shari in Ohio
Hello Listers... Please keep in mind that I am searching for my great grandfather MICHAEL (MICHL) PARLE born somewhere in County WEXFORD ab. 29 Nov 1865, arrived in USA in 1880 at age 15. Parents not known to me. He had 3 daughters (one my grandmother) and 1 son named Thomas who died at birth or in infancy in CLEVELAND, OHIO, USA. MICHAEL died in 1901 there. Would MICHAEL's father's name have been THOMAS since he named his son Thomas????? Is that an Irish naming pattern??? Thanks for all suggestions re finding any info re birth, RC baptism, etc. for MICHAEL PARLE in Ireland. Lynne in sunny Florida, USA
Hi...is anyone more familiar than I with Deeds circa 1875? I downloaded 4 deeds from the Cuyahoga Co. Recorder's site, and have some questions. Deed 1) Grantors: John SIRL and Anna Maria SIRL Grantee: Joseph SIRL Sum of Transaction: $5.00 Property: 'part of lots 48 and 49, beginning in center of Lorain Street...' Deed 2) Grantor: Joseph SIRL Grantee: Anna Maria SIRL Sum of Transaction: $5.00 Property: same as deed 1 (above) Both Deeds 1&2 were dated the same (signed 14 June 1875, Received 17 June 1875, Recorded 26 June 1875) Deed 3) Grantor: Friederich EISENBEIS and Anna Maria EISENBEIS Grantor: Joseph SIRL Sum of Transaction: $1.00 Property: 'part of lot 3...bounded as follows' Deed 4) Grantor: Joseph Sirl Grantee: Anna Maria Eisenbeis Sum of Transaction: $1.00 Property: same as Deed 3 Both Deeds 3&4 are dated the same (signed 21 June 1875, Received 22 June 1875, Recorded 1 July 1875) Can anyone guess what was going on? Why the transfer of the same property from a couple to a 3rd party, and then back to the female (presumably wife) on the same day? And the 3rd Party (my ancestor) was part of 2 sets of transactions of this nature within 2 weeks.... If anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them! Thanks, Kelly Moran moranfamilytree@hotmail.com
One reason might be that some of the area might have been rezoned, or one party needs an easement to access a piece of property, so all the lots had to be deeded differently. Sometimes if the county needed to put in a bridge or widen the streets this kind of thing would happen. The Great Lakes Chapter of the Association of Professional Genealogists is sponsoring an Advanced Genealogy Discussion Group. The next meeting is on Saturday, May 21, 2005. The purpose of the group is to discuss advanced genealogical methodology as presented in case studies that have appeared in various scholarly genealogical publications. The group meets the third Saturday of the month, starting at 10:00 am, at one of the Akron-Summit County Public Library meeting rooms. The library is located at 60 South High St., Akron, OH. The meetings last about one and one-half hours. The discussions are free but pre-registration is required. Any experienced genealogical researcher is welcome to enroll. As a pre-requisite, participants should be familiar with Dr. William M. Litchman's article, "Teaching Analysis, Logic, and the Research Process: A Seminar Approach", from the NGS News Magazine, Nov/Dec 2000, pages 340-343. Each participant is requested to read several times, in advance of the meeting, the article to be discussed at the meeting. The article chosen for the May 21, 2005 discussion appeared in the National Genealogical Society Quarterly, September 1992. It is titled "Howells of Muskingum County, Ohio: Correlating and Interpreting Evidence to Reconstruct a Family" beginning on page 194.
