One of my relatives was sent to the Orient State School in Pickaway County, Ohio about 1917. This county is just south of Franklin County (Columbus, Ohio). The school was closed in recent years. I would start by searching for a website about the school and see if you can find where the records were sent. Or log on to the list and see what anyone can tell you. He would be listed in a census but you would have to look for the Orient School. I've tracked down 3 ancestors this way. Ohio might have a Department of Mental Health that would list schools. I know Michigan does and I've used them. If I can help you in any way, please feel free to ask. I'm in Sandusky County, not Cuyahoga County. Go to Ohio Historical Society website to search their death certificate website. No problem. I just wanted to know where I should begin. You can rent microfilmed records from the LDS Family History Library in Salt Lake City. LDS = Latter-Day Saints. Their website is: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp Here is a link to their FHL FAQ: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHC/frameset_fhc.asp?PAGE=faq_fhc.asp After reading the FAQ, feel free to ask about anything you don't understand. FYI, NARA is the National Archives. If you happen to live nearby, you can also look at census (and other) records there. Boy do I ever need a new brain.. The name of the child born 29 Aug, 1919 and died 07 Sept. 1919 was Theodore Kollecker, fathers name was Theodore Kollecker and mothers name was Jennie Schumacher. They weren't married at the time of his birth. I know that they lived in Cleveland at the time of the birth. The other child(the injured one) was born Edward Kollecker on 29 Sept, 1922 in Cleveland of Theodore and Jennie Schumacher. I have a copy of his birth certificate and the record for a corrected name change to Elmer Henry Kollecker done on 01 Jan. 1979. He died 09 Dec, 1982 in Cleveland. I am hoping for help to find out were he was kept in his earlier years. Possibly from 1926 to mid or late 1930's. Sorry for not including this info in the earlier e-mail. Ruth

Joining in late here. I saw some Mortality schedule books at the library. I can check this coming Tuesday. I kind of recall they have books for more than one state, but don't think they had a lot of different years. Have never looked in them. What name and year were you interested in? I am looking for a marriage certificate for Ohio, ( William Crossman to Florence McIntyre), They lived in Cleveland but there was no record in Cuyahoga Co. for them. Is there a place where I can write if the county is unknown? Therese

You can get the death certificate at a number of other places in Ohio without spending the $16.50 the state requires. The Akron Library, the Stark County Library and the Ohio Historical Society are so much cheaper. If you send me the name I can pull it for .25 cents. I am wondering if someone can help me with 2 questions? 1. I have an uncle who was born 29 Aug. 1919 and died 07 Sept. 1919. I am wondering if there would have been a birth or death certificate for this baby? If so where do I look? 2. I have another uncle that was injured as a very young child and evidently was placed in a "home or hospital", somewhere in Ohio.. My mother remembers my grandmother filling a basket with goodies and being gone for a day or two at least once a month. Then one day she came home and told my mom that this young boy with her was her brother(my uncle Elmer). Uncle Elmer had the mental capacity of a very young teenager, maybe 13 or 14 in the time that I knew him, so evidently his head injury caused some mental problems. What I am looking for is where he may have been "kept" for the years that he wasn't home? Any suggestions on where to look would be greatly appreciated. Being in Alaska I am limited to the kindness and help of others for help and sincerely appreciate the help that I have gotten from this group. Thanks, Ruth
