Hi Nancy: Let me know approximately what years you're talking about for your grandfather going to school while living in Collinwood (and how old he would have been at the time). I have listings of schools in existence from 1906 - 1923 (not all years) that I could check for you. My Mary Callaghan (b. 1864-5/d. 1901, married name Keyes) was Roman Catholic. Because I attended Villa Angela Academy on Lake Erie on Lake Shore Blvd., I know that school existed from 1865. I checked at Ursuline College, and apparently nobody can find any records back that far....... When I come to Cleveland in June, I'm going to drive around that old neighborhood. Have no idea what to expect nowadays.......... Just thought that in 1880 a RCatholic grade school would have existed around there. I think they did go to St. Joseph Church (or am I thinking of being buried in St. Joseph Cemetery??). Think I'll check with Diocese of Cleveland..... Her father, Jeremiah Callaghan, re-married in 1876 and was married in St. Bridget Church........so...........maybe that's the one.... Thanks for your concern. Lynne in Florida the post office mentioned was 429 Woodland Ave. ************************************** See what's free at http://www.aol.com.
Thanks Laura: I've been trying to figure out where my grandfather would have gone to school if he lived in Collinwood. But I'm also not sure that was their primary address even though that is the one in the phone books. My father says that they had a summer home in Collinwood and another house somewhere in the city. I haven't found any evidence of this except various and asundry documents which may have only housed his father at one time or another but not deeds. I'm also thinking that he may have gone to a private school. I will try the District office and see what I can come up with that way. I may also be able to find something out from his college records which I still have to write for :o) Nancy
Hi Nancy: She wrote directly to the main office of the Cleveland Public Schools and stated in the letter which school our ancestor attended and approximate years and asked for any information available. About two weeks later she got copies of a few report cards (covering two years) for our ancestor and that ancestor's sister, and a "family card" that showed three of the children in this family and what schools they attended. She wrote back later asking about the older children in this family who would have attended school much earlier (there was a big gap between the children) and there were no records for those older children. So, I guess what you get is hit and miss. But, there are some records there. Good luck, Laura Hine On Thu, 12 Apr 2007 13:09:30 -0400 "Nancy Schramm" <[email protected]> writes: > Laura: > > When your cousin requested the information from the Cleveland > School > district who did this person contact. Laura: When your cousin requested the information from the Cleveland School district who did this person contact. The disctrict or a particular school? Nancy
NEOCAG meets Saturday April 14, 2007 at 9:00 am at St. Bartholomew Church in Mayfield. Norm Henke will lead the group with a talk on "VISTA - Or Not!?" This will be the pros and cons from a person who has been using it for quite some time. Visitors always welcome. Refreshments will be available. Sorry I will miss this, being at the OGS Conference in Columbus. For more details, see our web site at http://neocag.net Cynthia Turk
Hi Lynne: Since your Mary Callaghan was 15 years old in 1880, I'm guessing she would have been attending high school, but it's tough to say for sure. However, in 1879, the following high schools were in existence in Cleveland: Normal School - a training school for teachers Central High - on the east side West High - on the west side Since Broadway was on the east side, I would fathom a guess that a good starting place would therefore be Central High School. Just for your information, by 1906, the following high schools were in existence: Central High E. 55th south of Cedar Avenue East High E. 82nd at the corner of Decker Ave. Glenville High 495 Parkwood Blvd. at the corner of Everton Lincoln Nigh Scranton Road at the corner of Castle Ave. South High Broadway opposite Fullerton Ave. West High Franklin Ave. at the corner of W. 69th St. I hope that this helps a little. My cousin requested school records for the 1930 timeframe from the Cleveland Public Schools and was successful in getting some information for one of our ancestors, but they had nothing at all on another ancestor. So, getting school records is hit and miss. But, you might give it a try. Good luck Laura Hine On Thu, 12 Apr 2007 07:25:40 EDT [email protected] writes: > What school would my Great Grandmother Mary Callaghan (age 15) have > attended > if she lived at 1009 Broadway. What school would my Great Grandmother Mary Callaghan (age 15) have attended if she lived at 1009 Broadway. Cleveland, on the June 1880 Census? They were Roman Catholic. In 1870 she lived with her brother Charles and parents Jeremiah and Ann Callaghan and the post office mentioned was 429 Woodland Ave. Any ideas out there???? Great lists. Thanks. Cynthia are you sure this is the link? I used to work for Ameritech (now AT&T) and most of the yellow pages sales offices used to keep copies of old directories. Try www.smartpages.com for a sales office locator. I know there is one in Cleveland off of Rockside Rd near Canal. there is also one in Canton. If you don't make any headway email me directly and I'll see if I have any buddies left over there.
