North of Gettysburg,now Adams Co,was York Co, mid s Pa is York Springs, Pa, which,1750's had the 1st Episcopal church that far west,followed by York and Carlisle. And, nearby,and one of the 4 Quaker meetings of old York-Adams Co, was the Huntington Quaker Meeting. It struck me that a Quaker-Episcoppal neighborhood elsewhere in e Pa would not be very pro Rev War,and researching that theory,I found Rev Daniel Barton arrested,and depoerted 'for conspiring to destroy Pa colony munitions" . Later research hinted these munitions were being stored in one of his 3 churches-at York,Pa. and the incident at the time the British military took Philadelphia, and our own CONGESS moved to York.[ The British military also held NEW YORK CITY, mid 1776-Nov 1783, sooo the John Simmons Inn there was in Loyalist area.] The Hatton-Hattan -Hutton RESEARCHERS have found in Penn Archives 3rd,or 5th series, a York Co,Pa militia list that included what I say is our Adam Simmons, and his known York Spings-Huntington Twnsp NEIUGHBORS, and the date was [?] 1778, and somebody please post same to Holly. Benj Ely was b 1805,and came with Samuel and Rachel Leeds Ely, [m 1804] from on-shore Atlantic City,NJ,wth colony,1806, and Benjamin was the deaf Bantam Oh weaver,and merchant, and Mry Hitch's wedding dress came from 1 of his Cincinnati wholesalers. Thomas and Jane Smullins Hitch,were from very s Eastern Shore of Md, and,after a few years with his brother at Falmouth,Ky,in 1811 Thomas settled across the road from Carmel churchyard- Laurel cemetary of Simmons burial fame. John and Nancy lived there,ten moved a mile west of me ,to the farm "Bantam Stock farm" in the sw corner of the new Rt 125-South Bantam Rd interchange, and [?] just behind,or n of Old Bethel Methodist a mile north are Hitch graves,and Benj Ely,and his 3 wifes name Mary Mary Hitch Ely,Mary Sheldon Tice Ely and Mary Donham ely,of Jonathan S of Nathanial and his 2nd. Chuch now sits within East Fork State Park a mile north of Lake Harsha. carlely@juno.com once headed the group that tries to keep the old church painted and roofed. It should be noted that,1811, a colony from Adam Simmons Clermont,Oh neighborhood migrated to John Simmons Washington Co,Ind neighborhood. Colglazier,Gaskins,Fee,Purkizer are a portion of that roster. Old Thomas Hitch buried no 1,Jane Smullins,in Laurel,and remarried the widow Bainum, and as a very aged man,rode horseback to see the new baby,my grandmother,Ruie Ely. 1855 era. The photographer said the day was 2 cloudy to attemt a 5 generation photo,without the baby moving. Mary Hitch Ely likely died at-near the Bantam,Oh general store of her husband. She married young [16?] and her 1st,my great grandfather,John Francis Marion Ely, was born tiny,and pre-mature. [A teacup would fit over his head]. He was never of perfect health,though died in this house in his 70's. 1907 era.
