How would someone, presumably a mortician, preserve a body for shipment in 1842? My gggfather's brother, who lived in LaSalle county, IL, unexpectedly died on a visit to Clermont county, OH in 1842. His gravesite or record of burial has not been found either in OH or IL, but family tradition says his body was returned to IL for burial. Does this sound possible through embalming or, maybe, ice caskets that I have heard about? Richard Moore, ramoore@home.com
