My former husband always loved to tell this story about his two great uncles (or maybe they were great-great uncles) in Iowa back in the days of horse and wagons. It seems these two brothers farmed next to each other and usually did things together to sort of help each other out. They weren't in the habit of voting because they had to go so far to the polls to vote, but one year when the presidential election came up they decided to go vote. They had to hitch up the horses to the wagon early in the morning before the sun was barely up, their wives fixed them a lunch basket to take, and off they went. They knew they were giving up a day of work on the farms that would have to be made up by putting in even longer days. It was a long, slow trip to the town where the polls were located and it took all morning for them to get there. They voted, ate their lunches that the wives had packed, and headed back home. It was almost evening when they arrived back at their farms, and one brother turned to the other and said, "I know that it's supposed to be a secret ballot and no one is supposed to know how you voted, but we're brothers so I don't think it would hurt if we tell each other how we voted." They did. And guess what. One voted for the Republican candidate and the other voted for the Democratic candidate! True story. Susan
