I was just given a book of Presbyterian church records yesterday-records of the Nicholsville, or 'Scotch Settlement ' Presbyterian from 1831,and from the more anti-slavey 'New Style' branch, who located,in Bantam,in1861, led by Samuel Simpson, uncle of Pres Grant. And that Bantam church-Hermon Fagley, trustee, 1944, is where we went til my Mom wanted me exposed to a Sunday School not taught by my parents. So,my fondest memories of Easter Sunrise service are of the Bantam Presbyterians traveling to an Ohio River hilltop to join the Mt Zion Church of Christ-both churches led by Yale educated Rev Edwin Flory, apple grower. After Sunrise Service at Mt Zion [St Paul's today], we could gaze down Boat Run,and across the Ohio River, into n Ky a couple miles away. And play with the many Wildey kids. My cousin,Mary Louise Fagley married in 1946 her Dr ROSEGAY in that church. . [Her memorial from her San Francisco friends is on the Internet at www.google.com search ROSEGAY]. Anyway, after services, the Mt Zion folk always led us across the road,to a big breakfast in their former school house. At this late period,I can remember only 1 Easter Sunrise service after we started attending at Bethel. That was a sun rise service, held jointly by the several Bethel churches, near the shelter house in Burke Park. It might be,Easter, that we went back to Mt. Zion. As the Presbyterian church split over how anti-slavery to bew,so split the Bethel Methodist. President Grant's father, and Bethel mayor headed up the more moderate Methodists at the current site. A block away, where the "little school building "stands on n Main, was the federal law breaking Underground RRer branch of the church. When the Fagaly's came to Bethel in 1850,they joined the latter. Hench1@aol.com's Capt Will Fagaly was a conductor.
