Bethel had,at the se corner of Plane [rt 125] and Main [Rt 133] a big,old square,non-Federal 3 story brick,with H chimneys [sp? ] built by very early pioneer Houghton and Nancy Riley Clark[e] JP. Batavia's Reeder Wright Clark,and Smith G Clarke were sons. Kept as an Inn 100+ years,lastly as the Sinks House,where my grandmother boarded when a Bethel teacher. Houghton and Nancy wed in 1806,though Houghton Clarke,bEngland,taught in Bethel pre-1800,andhewas the marrying JP involved in Bethel's witch trial.The Sinks House was torn down about 1929,to build the current Grant Memorial building,home of the Bethel Museum 30 + years. There was alsop north of Bethel in 1800-1802 a Clermont official and blacksmith,Amos Smith,who had brothers Houghton and John Smith,b NJ. There were 3 old 2 story Federal bricks between Ash and West Streets,on Plane. One was Zachariah Riley's,who wed a Swing,and was Houghton Clarke's bro-in-law.] The huge,modern Bethel United Methodist church's west section covers Riley's house. Sontag 's LIVED IN IT 1954.She was a Hiler. Harlow's Tractor Sales complex of buildings centered on an old brick that was part of Joseph Thorntons,then Joseph Clare's wagon works.The Bethel Hotel was built by Michael Ellsberry . The lawyers 1 story brick hiidden beneath siding house at thenecorner of West and Planemay be Bethel's oldest. I lack a couple blocks,but must talk to other local historians before typing.
