    3. Consider that the name used may apply to the individual instead of the actual given name because that person chose a completely different name. My wife's aunt was named Elsie, didn't like it and chose Peg. Probably the only time Elsie ever showed up was on a legal document. On the other hand my mother, named Helen didn't like that and chose Betty, from her middle name Elizabeth. Betty showed up on legal documents in her case. Also middle names often become lost so the person you are researching could have been using a form of a middle name.
