He left New Jersey in 1818 and settled in Cleremont County, Ohio for a short time. In 1820 he homesteaded approximately 488 acres of land in Bartholomew County, Indiana, near the present-day city of Columbus. He gave 1 acre of land for the first Methodist Episcopal Church to be built in the County. It was known as Carter's Chapel. It is no longer standing, but the Cemetery is still in existence on Highway 31, about 3 miles north of Columbus. Part of Nathan Carter's land is still in possession of the Carter family. Although Nathan Carter died in Indiana, there is a tombstone in Bethel Cemetery, Hurffville, New Jersey, which reads: "Abigail Chew first wife of Nathan Carter. Died November 3, 1806, aged 33 years. Nathan Carter died in the state of Indiana March 26, 1847, in the 78th year of his age." On the reverse side of the tombstone reads, "Drewsyllah Step, 2nd wife of Nathan Carter, died October 27, 1808, aged 26 years, also Elizabeth Leonard, 3rd wife of Nathan Carter, died in the state of Indiana, March 31st, 1841, age 57 years". A small book, entitled Carter Family Records found in the DAR Library, Washington, D.C., contains the following: "A letter from brother D. Carter dated August 21, 1850, informs me as follows: ""I took a stone up to Bethel and put it up to Mother's grave. It is Italian rock, it is almost 6ft. high by 18 inches wide and cost 21 Dollars. I had it put in between the graves. Over Mother's grave - over stepmothers grave."" (Note: D. Carter would be Nathan's son Daniel.) Note: My husband and I (the preparer of this Carter Genealogy) drove to the Bethel Methodist Episcopal Cemetery in Hurffville, New Jersey and found the tombstone of Nathan and Abigail Carter. We took pictures, and also made a "rubbing". The tombstone says: "ABIGAIL CHEW First Wife of Nathan Carter Died Nov 3d, 1806 aged 33 years. NATHAN CARTER Died in the State of Indianna March 26th 1847 in the 78th year of his age." The other side of the stone has the inscriptions of the other 2 wives. Hanna B Dupree, b 1813, daughter of Nathan Carter and Elizabeth Leonard wrote the following in 1884: "Nathan Carter started West in 1820. Came over mountains in wagon. Took a boat at Pittsburg and staid at John Carters on Buckwell farm near Batavia Ohio until Sep. Reached Bartholomew County Dec, 1st 1820. Land had been entered in Aug. previous. 1/2 mi by 1/2 mi in extent. All at present is in the hands of heirs of him who entered it except 6 acres." I visited the Gloucester County Historical Society, Woodbury, NJ which had in its files much work done by Mrs. Lucille C Hull of Columbus, IN.
