Today,my w Bethel,Ohio hike took me where I was in the northern part of the farm where Jesse Root Grant m Hannah Simpson in 1821. I could see,in the distance, the site where the old brick Thomas Page had sold John Simpson,Jr had been located. Thomas Page then started a tannery at Pt Pleasant,Oh,on the Ohio, where, 1822,Hannah Simpson Grant and Jesse Root Grant had the future Prs- Gen US GRANT. Said house burned with multiple loss of life,1900 era. Ohio Rt 125,then s Sugartree Rd,3\4 mile. I have a picture of the house, someplace 3 days ago,I saw the Simpson tombstones in Old Bethel churchyard,a mile north of Bantam,Oh in East Fork State Park. Thomas Page had 400 acres from 1805. He built the neighborhood's 1st,or 2nd brick and sold the whole to the John Simpson's [Jr] in 1817 era. I know the site of a 2nd ,very old ,cabin and well on the property. Simpson had a Griffith son-in-law with him,and another dau m [James?] Ross. Neshamminy Presbyterian, in s e Bucks Co,Pa had been a church of Simpson,Jr. John Simpson,Sr had attended one near Harrisburg,Pa ministered by Rev Elder. Terr Gov Samuel Medary wrote of attending elementary school with Hannah Simpson Grant,in s e Pa .My memory is that it was a Quaker school, though both Medarry and Simpson had Nesamminy Presbyterian ties. But they lived in the Gwynedd-North Wales ,Pa colony across the county line south. 1698, Gwynedd,North Wales was settled, and many of the Welsh became quaker. Medary had a Welsh Harris mother.John Simpson,Jr had a Welsh Roberts tie, plus the Griffith's were Welsh- 2 Simpson siblings m 2 Griffith's. Prof and US GRANT expert John Simon tells me of Hannah Simpson Grant being so quiet. I think she was educated as a Quaker-for sure, she was raised amid nw Philadelphia suburbs Quakers. Ks-Mn Territory Gov Samuel Medary wrote of attending Quaker school with Hannah. A power in Ohio State politics, and a Columbus,Ohio newspapermam, this childhood friend of Hannah's was jailed in the war by Gen Grant for his Peace Democrat newspaper writings. 1825,Sam Medary had stopped his migration west at Bethel,Ohio because of the Simpson's. I'm from his sister,Mary Medary Iden, who stopped at Bethel,in 1834,after gettig a Quaker certificate of removal from n Wash DC in Md Quakers. Hannah Grant's nephew m a Fagley Hannah Grant's bro-in-law,Oliver Grant m a Medary, with a Bucks Co Quaker mom. But,the Simpson farm adjoins not my Dad's Fagley's, but my Mom's Justice-ELY-Brown farm. I was raised in the Bantam Presbyterian,1940's because, 1865, Samuel Simpson converted my Mom's Justice's and Ely's from the Methodist Old Bethel. But all are buried at Old Bethel.Which is not,and is 5 miles west of the Methodist church in Bethel who had Jesse Root Grant as leader. A block east of the latter was an Underground RRer Methodist. Actually ,on a corner of the 400 acres of John Simpson was a 2nd Underground RRer church. Which makes one think. The Grant's were so-so on slavery, but the Simpson's? A farm cut from the 400 acres of Page-Simpson was Underground RRer Rev Isaac Holmes Brown's. Samuel Simpson's son,Capt Robert Belville Simpson married a sister of a proven Underground RRer.,Capt Will Fagley. When a Presbyterian church became available at Nicholsville, the Simpson's attended it. And the Presbyterian's were anti-slavery. Was Samuel Simpson,or son, guilty of breaking the Federal law and helping slaves escape? JOHN SIMON?
