Kids of Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown-will written 1814 RT 743 and Indian Creek,Washington Twnsp,Clermont Co,Oh .Do I know them- no. Capt-Lt-JP-Rev George Brown's does not mention all his children. "Or" it does not mention all the Brown's in his near neighborhood. And the waters got muddied 1-2 years ago when we met akabrat830@earthlinknet, and by some data from the joint EMAIL group, MCQUEEN-L@rootsweb.com . I can prove a no of Brown's the age of his children nearby . The problem is that Henry Brown lived nearby a few years, and his childen [child] are the right age,and likely 1st cousins . And that Henry Brown's son Washington Brown m a McQueen also. I'm much more sure Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown,d 1814 was raised in the Hampstead-Westminster,Md area. And have many more hints that he was son of John Brown m Ruth [?] mCQueen, and grandson of George and Mary Stevenson Brown[e],whose land adjoind,n e Westminster ,Md Dugal and Grace McQueen's, from 1743. John Brown's dau ,Mary, was in MADISON CO,KY m to Edward Logsdon,Jr, her cousin. I think Henry, above,is John's son, also. Jeanine, since you have Ashburn's I'm going to repost here what BCJBogie posted to Simpson-l@rootsweb.com This is about the Simpson's whose farm adjoined my grandmother Brown's. My grandfather Brown owned part of the Simpson farm. U. S. Grant. In the fall of 1818, John Simpson moved from Montgomery Co., PA, and settled on the Page place(which he had purchased the year before), moving into a brick house, part of which was erected in 1807 and fully completed in 1811, and which yet stands in good condition.[old brick burned, with multiple loss of life abt 1900. Fine modern home on it's site] Mr. Simpson was a man of intelligence, and bore an excellent reputation among his neighbors. He died Jan. 20, 1837 in his seventieth year. His family consisted of Mary, who married James Griffith, Jan. 29, 1813, in Pennsylvania, and moved to Bethel in 1817, where he carried on his trade, blacksmithing, until his death. He was the father of John S., William L., R.McK., O.P., L W., and A.R. Griffith, and of daughters who married George B. Johnson and T. Q. Ashburn of Batavia. The second daughter of John Simpson, Hannah, married Jesse R. Grant, June 24, 1821, at the Simpson Homestead in Tate[township], the Rev. Moses Edwards, a Baptist minister, performing the ceremony. [HB Fagley daily walking to corner of farm] The fruits of this union were Pres-gen Hiram Ulyses (later called Ulyses Simpson GRANT ), born April 27, 1822, Samuel Simpson, Orville L., Rachel C. (died single), Virginia Payne (Mrs. A.L. Corbin), and Mary Frances (Mrs. M.J. Cramer). Jesse R. Grant died at Covington Ky., but Mrs. Grant still lives with her daughter, Mrs. Corbin, at Jersey City, N.J. The fourth daughter of John Simpson, Ann, married James Ross, also a Pensylvanian, who came to Clermont County in 1818, and who lived at Bethel until his death in 1849. Their children were Helen, Orlando H., and Marcellus. The former married W.T. Burke (now of Portsmouth, Ohio), and at the breaking of the war, in 1861, U.S. Grant, Orland H. Ross, and W.T. Burke were all serving as clerks in Grant and Co.'s leather-store, at Galena, Ill.; and Ross, after holding many positions in the Army, was assigned to a position in the Treasury Department, which he still holds. The only son of John Simpson is Samuel Simpson, who married Elizabeth Griffith, and yet lives near Bantam, in Tate [Township] nearly eighty four years of age. He reared two sons, Capt Robert B., living in Cincinnati,[who was HB Fagley's great uncle] and John, a captain in the United States army, in New York. Of his five daughters, Harriet E. is single; the others married William Elrod, George S. Gatch, Benj. Winans, and Walter E, Burroughs. Perhaps I should explain my interest in all this. All of my mother's family were in Clermont County from very early until recently. This makes Hermon Fagley a very distant cousin, through the Browns. Mother had told me we had some connection to Gen. Grant; my aunt and cousin didn't know exactly what. When I went looking, I found that Mary Ellen Griffith, the daughter of James Griffith and Mary Simpson, was the first cousin of Gen. Grant. She was also the second wife of Judge T.Q. Ashburn, who was my grandmother's uncle. So you see, I really can't claim any relationship. It is still interesting, though. Hope this is of a little help.
