Amelia and Hamlet adjoin on RT 125 [Ohio Turnpike.] About 1950,they stretched about a mile along the highway, with very few side streets, for, unlike some towns like Bethel and Williamsburg, they were never surveyed into blocks. Most of the side streets are post 1950. [And mostly are dead end,I think. ] The local fire dept's name hints at a problem researching Amelia-Hamlet area. BMOP,for Batavia,Monroe,Ohio, and Pierce townships, [and s e Union township is also near. ] Ohio Rt 132 jogs across Rt 125. Batavia township once covered all Amelia-Hamlet north of Rt 125. Ohio, then Pierce township covered the south side. The C,G,+P RR and the I,R+T Interurban RR passed thru the village. Charles Carroll Brown's bio says he attended Amelia High School and Parker's Academy. He was just 16,when he enlisted,Feb, 1865,under Capt Robt B Simpson,so I guess Amelia offered higher education 1864 era. I guess Amelia's sports claim to fame was about 1951-52 when Lloyd Amburgy drove in the winning run for pitcher Kenny Gaskins and coach Stanley Ansteat [sp?] in the Ohio State high school base ball championship. Amelia was always known for baseball in my youth. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! Juno offers FREE or PREMIUM Internet access for less!
