To all, This is the information I saved a while back about the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library. Hope it is of some help. I wrote to the Internet Reference down at the bottom for the info I wanted and they sent it to me at 40 cents a copy. Subject: Cincinnati Library OBITUARIES AND DEATH NOTICES We are often asked how one finds death notices (the page with deaths listed in small boxes) and obituaries (larger write-ups about the deceased). To start you may check Newsdex, our index to local newspapers for the name of the deceased. Go to our homepage, click on Catalog, and then choose option number 2, Newsdex. Enter the name of the deceased, by putting the last name in first, then a comma, then the first name. If you find the person's name, choose the number in front of it, enter this number and then push the enter button. This will bring up a citation consisting of the name of a newspaper, the date of the paper, the page number and the column number. This is the information which we need to find the obituary or death notice and mail it to you. You CANNOT read them online, as Newsdex is an index only. We do not have the technology to e-mail you the text of the obituary/death notice. You must send us your mailing address and we will mail you a xerox copy from microfilm. Please keep in mind that before 1985 we did not index death notices, only obituaries. Therefore if the person you are looking for died before 1985 and received a death notice, but not obituary, you will not find this person's name indexed. If you do not find the deceased person index and you are SURE that the person died in Hamilton County, you may mail us the person's name and exact date of death (year, month and day). We will then search the newspapers for five days following that date. If we find a death notice, we will mail it to you at the cost of 40 cents per xerox page. Please do not send money until we bill you. If you don't know an exact date of death for the person, you should contact either the Elm Street Health Center at 1525 Elm St., Cincinnati, OH 45210 -- telephone: 513-352-3120; or the Hamilton County Health Department at 11499 Chester Rd., Sharonville, OH 45246 -- telephone: 513-326-4510. They can check death certificates and give you an exact date of death. You may then contact us with this information. Our email address is: mg_staff@plch.lib.oh.us magazines & newspapers dept.
