Ben Franklin's famous cartoon 13 segemated snake captioned something like - "United we stand:divided we fall " was accurate. 13 former British colonies ,some that were about 50-50 on Independence. That was nearly the Contential Congress vote on Independence. 50-50. 1st, there were 20 some British colonies in North America,not 13. 4 in Canada,and some in the West Indies,but also East Florida and West Florida,from Jacksonville to Natchez. Ky had 3 forts in 1775. Lexington,Ky had a Loyalist colony in 1776. Some say there was another Loyalist fort in 1780 north of Lexington. Down in western NC,the Regulators-tax protestors- were defeated in 1771,and made to take an oath to King George III. Thus,western NC had more of a brother vs brother war. Col Jonathan Hunt was the militia leader of the Boone-Bryan settlement oon the Yadkin around Mockville,NC,where the DAR chapter is named for him. 2 of his 20 siblings pioneered east of Bethel,Clermont. Levi and Charles Hunt,who moved on in 1807. They had a sister married,and widowed by a Loyalist Bryan,whose brothers were Col Saluwm Bryan,and Capt Joseph Bryan,all uncles of Rebecca,-Mrs Daniel Boone. Back in 1776,when the British military moved it's base from Boston to New York city,they had 600 boats. In July,1777,in their move from New York city to Philadelphia,they had 260 boats. The British controlled the Atlantic,except in 1781,during Yorktown,Va. How many Clermonters had once lived exposed to the British Navy,or near the foraging parties sent out by the British from Boston,New York,Philadelphia,or [fewer] Charleston? No way to defend any of the colony of Delaware,for instance. Or the Jersey shore. Campbell Co,KY IS JUST SW OF Clermont Co,and named for Pittsburg fur merchant,John Campbell,whose busines and land speculation partner was Dr John Connolly. Together ,1774, they owned the site of Louisville,Ky,but Connolly was then captured as a Loyalist.
