Gang, With all the recent activity on this list, I thought I would see if anyone has any information regarding Stephen Bennett and family. Here's what I do know about this branch of my family: I know nothing regarding the ancestors of my Stephen Bennett who married Margaret Mitchell Rardin April 8, 1841. Here is what I do know regarding my Stephen Bennett: 1. He was born "on Irish soil" according to his granddaughter. 2. He owned 320 acres near Cincinnati, Ohio. 3. He had a son by the name of Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 4. His first wife died soon after Stephen Nathaniel Bennett was born. (This would be around 1833 based on census dates) 5. He married Margaret Mitchell Rardin 6. His son, Stephen Nathaniel Bennett married Eliza Jane Curless on 20 November 1856 in Clermont Co. 7. He gave his son Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 80 acres near Springfield, Ohio. These 80 acres were or are a part of Miami County, OH. These 80 acres were also close enough to Cincinnati that Nathaniel's children attended school in Cincinnati. All the above information was gathered from an Autobiography written by Sarah Elizabeth Bennett 10 December 1937. What I have dug up myself is: 1. Stephen Bennett married Margaret Rardin on 8 April 1841. 2. Stephen Nathaniel Bennet, under the name of Nathaniel Benet, was counted in the 1860 Union Twp., Champaign Co., OH census Page 144 Line 18. He is living with Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. as well as Charlotte M. Curless. 3. I was able to find a Stephen Bennett of the Monroe Twp in an index for the 1830 and 1840 Clermont Co. census. (Does anyone have the actual census info?) 4. There is a Nathaniel Bennett in Springfield Twp according to the index of the 1840 Clermont Co. census (Is this the 80 acres given by his father? Does anyone happen to have this census info also?) 5. Other than the index entries I have not seen the actual 1830 and 1840 census, so do not know what Stephen's household looked like. 6. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1870 Benton Co. MO census. He has Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. still living with him along with a Maria Curless and a Edny Curless. 7. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1880 Butler Co., KS census. Here are a couple of other items extracted from Sarah Elizabeth's autobiography: "My father sold the eighty acres in Ohio and went to Sedalia, Missouri. We lived there for 4 years, later taking homestead in Kansas near Towanda." The fact that Nathaniel was counted in the 1870 Missouri and the 1880 Kansas census appears to support this. I was able to locate a Nathan Bennett in the 1900 Pottawattamie Co., IA census. He is living and working in an apartment building there as the elevator man. The only item that would make him my Nathan is the fact that he states he was born in Ohio and his father and mother were from Ireland. Other than that, I'm not certain this is my Stephen Nathaniel, but I haven't been able to locate any other ones in the 1900 census. He shows up again in the 1910 Arapahoe Co., CO census living with his daughter Sarah Elizabeth and her husband James Andrew Hunter. Sarah Elizabeth met her Husband when they lived in Towanda, Butler Co., KS. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett doesn't live long enough to appear in another census as he died 27 October 1919 in Glendale, Arapahoe Co., CO. I hope some of the above information can lead to more discuveries regarding the Bennett branch of my family. Thanks for your time, Jim Butler the.butlers@verizon.net
