    1. Re: [OHCLER] Migration to Colorado - PETERSON, 1860-70
    2. kim j torgler
    3. Cindy, The most probable route wasfrom Omaha, Nebraska along Overland Trai which followed the the Platte River across Nebraska and down the South Platte thru Julesburg, Colorado and into Denver. During the Civil War, the Overland Trail west of Julesburg and the Cherokee Trail nw of Denver on to Fort Bridger, Wyoming was patrolled by the 11th Ohio Cavalry (1862 - 1866). Some of the soldiers were from Clermont County and had travelled the trails to an from Omaha and their western posts. They would have been good sources of information for anyone in Clermont who traveled West after the War about what to expect and what would be needed to make the trip. Travel by wagon continued along this route even after the Union Pacific built its rail lines adjacent to the trail. Sonme of the soldiers ended back out in Wyoming and Colorado after returning home following the War. 1. Migration to Colorado - PETERSON, 1860-70
    2. Several PETERSON families from Williamsburg, Clermont County migrated to Colorado in the 1860's and 1870's: Henry Clay, Fountain, Adolphus, William, and Edwin L. PETERSON. After some time in Colorado farming NE of Denver, some of these families returned to Clermont County. I am interested in finding the route that they took for this trip. Does anyone have any ancestor tales about moving west during this time period? Or can anyone point me to any websites that might have some information? Thank you, Cindy [email protected]_ (mailto:[email protected])

    2. The Butler Family
    3. The N in the name of the Stephen N. Bennett that married Eliza Jane Curless stands for Nathaniel. In fact, in some census, Stephen went by the name of Nathan or Nathaniel. In the autobiography of Stephen Nathaniel's grandaughter, it states: "My father wandered away from his father's home when a youth but returned to Cincinnati, Ohio, when he was quite a foung man." Since the 1840 Clermont Co. census shows Nathaniel living with his father and the next time I have been able to find Nathaniel, he appears in the 1860 Union Twp, Champaign Co. census, as his own household under the name Nathaniel Benet, along with his father Stephen and step-mother Margaret. I can only assume that when he "wandered away" was sometime during 1850 since his father and step-mother are listed in the 1850 Monroe Twp census and I have been unable to locate a place where Nathaniel was counted for that year. Regarding Eliza Jane Curless - the 1880 Towanda Co, KS census states that her father was born in New Jersey and her mother was born in Ohio. 2. Hi John, Thanks for your response. I am not directly related to the Perrines, but it is a name I keep running across in my research of DYE. I am descended from JOHN DYE, the Revolutionary War vet who settled in Brown County, OH. ISAAC DYE's father was JAMES DYE, a brother to my JOHN. They were both sons of JAMES DEY and SARAH LEACH of Middlesex County, New Jersey. I would be very interested in the additional information on JOSEPH PERRINE found in Daniel Perrine, The Huguenot. 1. Good Night!, Irene
    2. RICHARD RUSSELL
    3. Hello: This is where I came in. Only kidding, Irene. The death certificate info for Amanda (Wheeler) Beckelhymer, widow of Elijah Beckelhymer, states that "Lavina Wheeler" was her mother. As I was not at the birthing I cannot guarantee that the "Lavina Wheeler" was the same Lavina/Lovina/Lavena/Louvina Wheeler who was a blood daughter of the William and Margery Wheeler that are buried in the backyard just off of Lewis Rd in Clermont Co Ohio. All indications would say so. Plus, I cannot guarantee that Lavina/etc was actually unmarried, or not, but only that no "husband" (father, to Amanda) was listed. This would bring up the other "possible", even though againest the common or usual or standard, when only the mother is listed, - - - - maybe Lavina/et Wheeler was some Lavina/etc (someone) who had married a Wheeler?, - - - and no one knew his name? That is also why I suggested getti! ng Amanda's Pension records. Take care, Dick

    3. Hello: I said I was in bad shape, and I just proved it. Also just proved how "tender" the info/data, often copied as Gospel by the "readers", comes across the "airways", - - - -contains mistakes, even if only "typo's". Into the middle of the "Wheeler" deal, and then John's questions, and several other's comments, I entered my two cents, and blew it. Re: V0 5 #75, per V0 5 #74, of course it is the Pension papers of Amanda (Wheeler) Beckelhymer/Bhymer that need looking up, - - - - not "a" Amanda (Wheeler) Short. The latter surname, "Short", was a big big big mistake by my hands over my old worn out mind. Sorry. Elijah Beckelhymer died 14June 1895 Terre Haute Vigo Co Ind, and only wife/widow Amanda (Wheeler) Beckelhymer died 2 may 1905 Terre Haute Vigo Co Ind, and listed in Vigo Co death certificates, are both buried at H! ighland Lawn Cemetery Terre Haute Vigo Co Ind; - - - - same plot as Luther and Christina (Bhymer)(Corbin)(Lawson) Stark. The death certificate vitals lists Lavina Wheeler as the mother of Amanda Wheeler, with no "father" listed. Sorry that my "two cents" wasn't worth it. Take care, Regards, Dick

    2. Eliza Curless 23 m Stephen N Bennett,25,nov 20,1856 by John C Maddy, minister. Rev John C Maddy was not local, but was a Methodist located at several Clermont Methodist churches. There were 3 pioneer NJ>Clermont Co [2 a mile into Brown Co.] Curless families. I'm guessing she was a granddaughter of Timothy Curless,of the Williamsburg-Batavia township line [north side of 1970 Lake Harsha within East Fork State Park.]That would be 15+ miles from the Big Indian-Laurel Bennett's, I guess she attended Greenbrier Methodist,if not my Old Bethel. Miami Co is north of Dayton, and west of Springfield, and 100 miles from Cincinnati schools, with Dayton in between. Timothy Curless lived 25 miles east of Cincinnati.

    1. Garrett Family and the Smyrna Church
    2. Donna Stinson
    3. Could someone tell me if most or all of the cemeteries in Clermont co have been published? I have located one book at the library here in Los Angeles with what seemed like a lot of information on Clermont co cemeteries. But I found only one Garrett family and that seems odd to me, the family arrived about 1800, I am interested in the dates from about 1820 through 1860. I know they were affiliated with a the Smyrna Church. Perhaps there is a cemetery attached? Thanks Donna

    1. Stephen Bennett and family
    2. The Butler Family
    3. Gang, With all the recent activity on this list, I thought I would see if anyone has any information regarding Stephen Bennett and family. Here's what I do know about this branch of my family: I know nothing regarding the ancestors of my Stephen Bennett who married Margaret Mitchell Rardin April 8, 1841. Here is what I do know regarding my Stephen Bennett: 1. He was born "on Irish soil" according to his granddaughter. 2. He owned 320 acres near Cincinnati, Ohio. 3. He had a son by the name of Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 4. His first wife died soon after Stephen Nathaniel Bennett was born. (This would be around 1833 based on census dates) 5. He married Margaret Mitchell Rardin 6. His son, Stephen Nathaniel Bennett married Eliza Jane Curless on 20 November 1856 in Clermont Co. 7. He gave his son Stephen Nathaniel Bennett 80 acres near Springfield, Ohio. These 80 acres were or are a part of Miami County, OH. These 80 acres were also close enough to Cincinnati that Nathaniel's children attended school in Cincinnati. All the above information was gathered from an Autobiography written by Sarah Elizabeth Bennett 10 December 1937. What I have dug up myself is: 1. Stephen Bennett married Margaret Rardin on 8 April 1841. 2. Stephen Nathaniel Bennet, under the name of Nathaniel Benet, was counted in the 1860 Union Twp., Champaign Co., OH census Page 144 Line 18. He is living with Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. as well as Charlotte M. Curless. 3. I was able to find a Stephen Bennett of the Monroe Twp in an index for the 1830 and 1840 Clermont Co. census. (Does anyone have the actual census info?) 4. There is a Nathaniel Bennett in Springfield Twp according to the index of the 1840 Clermont Co. census (Is this the 80 acres given by his father? Does anyone happen to have this census info also?) 5. Other than the index entries I have not seen the actual 1830 and 1840 census, so do not know what Stephen's household looked like. 6. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1870 Benton Co. MO census. He has Eliza, Elizabeth, and Ida M. still living with him along with a Maria Curless and a Edny Curless. 7. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett is counted in the 1880 Butler Co., KS census. Here are a couple of other items extracted from Sarah Elizabeth's autobiography: "My father sold the eighty acres in Ohio and went to Sedalia, Missouri. We lived there for 4 years, later taking homestead in Kansas near Towanda." The fact that Nathaniel was counted in the 1870 Missouri and the 1880 Kansas census appears to support this. I was able to locate a Nathan Bennett in the 1900 Pottawattamie Co., IA census. He is living and working in an apartment building there as the elevator man. The only item that would make him my Nathan is the fact that he states he was born in Ohio and his father and mother were from Ireland. Other than that, I'm not certain this is my Stephen Nathaniel, but I haven't been able to locate any other ones in the 1900 census. He shows up again in the 1910 Arapahoe Co., CO census living with his daughter Sarah Elizabeth and her husband James Andrew Hunter. Sarah Elizabeth met her Husband when they lived in Towanda, Butler Co., KS. Stephen Nathaniel Bennett doesn't live long enough to appear in another census as he died 27 October 1919 in Glendale, Arapahoe Co., CO. I hope some of the above information can lead to more discuveries regarding the Bennett branch of my family. Thanks for your time, Jim Butler [email protected]
