Hello listers...I am new to this list. My ancestor Jesse Fletcher lived in Clermont County and I am trying to track down his origins. Here is what I have and I would appreciate any help... John Fletcher b. abt 1760 somewhere in PA (possibly Western PA and from a farming family who had whiskey stills) married Phoebe Bickel. They had two sons David and William and left Bedford Cty, PA in 1791 along with several other families to go to Gerrard's Station, Hamilton County, Ohio. Jesse was born there in 1792, possibly the first white child born in that county. John was accidently shot during a surveying expedition and Phoebe married Captain Richard Hall who was apparently in charge of the settlers. In early 1800's the family all moved to Clermont Cty as Richard was transferred there under St. Clair. Apparently other Fletcher and Bickel family members had migrated to Ohio with them and on to Clermont County. The Draper Papers mention other Fletchers and Bickels in Hamilton County early on so I suspect related families just all went together. I am trying to find out the origins of these folks. If any of you have information or family connections to any of these lines, I would love to hear from you. Susan in Milwaukee

I am looking for info on John Jacob Hetterick. He died July 23, 1913. I did not find his funeral record in the T P White Funeral Home Book, but i visited Nurre Funeral home and did find it. It says he died at residence at Moscow. Clermont County cannot find a death cert. on him. By 1913 did they not have to keep death cert? Could there possibly be an obit in one of the older newspapers? Does anyone have access to these newspapers? If so could possibly do a look up for me? Any other suggestions would be great. Thanks, Missy

I've learned much on Benj Clark,an early leader in the Bantam,Oh Old Bethel Methodist from the following joint Email. I differ with a couple things, and I have additions. Sarah Blackman, wife of Rev JOHN COLLINS, and her brothers, James and Rev Learner Blackman, had a Clark mother. Likely Tom Clark was their grandfather. I have wondered if Capt Elijah Clark m Jane Lardner was their kin. I have long wondered is Learner was not a corruption of Lardner. .Tom Clark sent a son back to CT to bring him a 2nd wife in NJ. Son also found a bride that trip to CT. I'LL POST THE EMAIL,and follow with more comments < NJ to Clermont Co. The site is marked by the old Burying Ground or Churchyard, at what was known as Clark's Mills, now a part of Port Republic. [very near Leeds Point-Collins Mill-Smithville-Chestnut Neck BATTLE- On the river bank, at the site of the Clark Plantation, in Clarks Landing are two headstones: "Here lyes the body of Mr. Thomas Clark who died May 17, A. D. 1752 in the 65 year of his age. Here lyes the body of Mrs. Ruth Clark wife of Mr Thomas Clark who died June 2nd 1749 in the 53rd year of her age." The Presbyterians were at Clark's Mills Meeting House, built by Thomas Clark about 1762. < B-1 Benjamin Clark, born ca 1760, died before 1847, married 1st Sarah _______, 2nd 9-22-1805 Lucusso Garland, who must have died before 1813, 3rd Christina Garland, who d before 1847. He was in the Rev War. He shows on estate settlement of David, deed book F, p 223 1800-1802, & G, p 262 1902-1803. In the Colonial period and for a number of years later, live stock roamed at large. Early laws required that they be earmarked, the horns marked, or that they be branded for identification. When livestock wandered to the wrong plantation, the law required that it be reported, also advertised. A "posting" fee of 25@ seems to have been charged in Great Egg Harbor Twp. The note was that a "yearling steer, crop off the Neigh Ear, hole in the right Ear" came to Benjamin Clark's Mill 1794. He arrived in Tate Twp, Clermont Co, OH ca 1804. He bought land with the deed dated 1806 from Robert Tylar and Margaret, his wife. Daniel Teagarden and Robert Leeds were witnesses. [Robert and Margaret Leeds Leeds lived on the site of Bantam,Oh,with his land joning Daniel Teagarden at Ullrey's Run. Teagarden, in 1811,moved near present Franklin Co,Ind with his new [EDWARD?] Doughty son-in-law,who died hunting the 1st winter on the extreme frontier.Wm Simons is [not?] of ADAM SIMMONS. Jesse Justice,Thomas Page,Wm Simons, George Swing bought adjoining tracts the same day in 1805. Simons sold some lands to Page, and moved to Indiana[?] but died on a trip back to Bantam. Like Andrew Pinkham, who bought the Teegarden farm,Timothy Folger was a Nantucket whaler, HB FAGLEY] He secured another piece of land from William Simonds and Lydia, his wife. He and his wife, Christina, sold both together on 4-7-1813 for $1400 to Timothy Folger, of Hamilton Co. Witnesses were David Teagarden & Andrew Pirkham. The land bordered Samuel Echarts, Robert Leeds, Daniel Echarts. The land had been surveyed by Thomas Pearson and Patented to Robert Tyler and recorded on War Office Vol. N, page 133 of lands granted to
the Virginia Line on Continental Establishment and conveyed to William
Simmonds by deed Jun 27, 1810 Robert Leeds, mentioned above, could be the same man who showed in the New Jersey records. There was a large family of that name at Leed's Point in Gloucester County. It was at the mouth of the river that the Clarks lived on -- being called the Egg Harbor area. Matthew Collins was a neighbor in New < Jersey. He may have been related to the REV John Collins,[ a brother of] who came to Clermont County to set up the church. [Old Bethel Methodist in East Fork State Park,a mile n of Bantam,Oh Emma Doughty, Mrs. Daniel, writes to her relatives in New Jersey that Benjamin Clark farms about 18 acres, with corn 11 feet tall, and "has not reached its growth yet. I mention those things that you may see how fertile the land is without manure." This is from a series of letters reprinted in a Atlantic County, New Jersey history. The letters are dated 1836, and were sent from Batavia, Clermont County, Ohio to her sis-in-law, Mrs. Sarah < Doughty, Egg Harbor, Absecome, NJ, County of Gloucester. Daniel and Emma took seven children, leaving their home, which had been sold on contract to a family member. She mentions Benjamin Clark, as reprinted, p 30, Vol 7-8 of Atlantic County History Society Yearbook. A note of explanation, p 27 Vol 7-8, says these letters were to Sarah and Charlotte Doughty, wives of her husband's brothers, Nathaniel and Enoch. [Emma Doughty lost Daniel in the explosian of the steamboat, 'Mozelle" She then married,2nd,a son of George Peterson, Pleasant Mills,NJ and Williamsburg,Oh merchant. Emma mentioned JAMES BLACKMAN and JOHN VAN SANT,AND JAMES EWAN,etcin Ohio-HB FAGLEY] He was one of the men to whom Rev. John Collins and his wife, Sarah, transferred 1805 land for the purpose of starting a Methodist Episcopal known as Bethel-Bantam Church, or Bethel Methodist meeting house. Others on the deed were Robert Leeds, Thomas Page, Daniel Teagarden, William Simonds, David White. This land bordered Elias Gerard, Jonas Blackwood, Josiah O'Heroin on the Little Miami River. Witnesses were John & Richard Doughty. This is north
of Mount Carmel. [WRONG-Old Bethel Methodist and 5+ acre cemetary is a mile n of Bantam,Oh. John Collins, and at his house the first meetings were held. Among the early members of the class were persons belonging to the Collins, Higbee, McCullom, Justice, Drummond, Clark, and other families living along the East Fork. About 1807 a log meeting-house was erected by the society." John Collins had come from NJ and started what was known as the New Jersey Settlement. Benjamin lived on the edge, buying from Tylar. Benjamin's 1st wife was Sarah, who must have died ca 1805 (to be 2nd person buried in church cemetery,) when he sold to move further north into Union Township. His wife was Christiana when he sold in 1813. It is possible that he married 9-22-1805 Lucusso Garland and she did not live long. The 2nd marriage was preformed at Milford,Oh 15-20 miles from Bantam,Tate Twnsp No marriage record is found for a Christina Garland. A history of ME Church is quoted "Mrs. Sarah Clark, wife of Benjamin Clark, a Methodist 'exhorter' and class leader, was the second person buried in Old Bethel cemetery. Mr. Chandler was the first." The records of the Bethel Church were stored in a shed, which burned in the early 1900's. Only a few items mentioned in county histories have been preserved.[I'm not sure this is correct-I have heard, but never seen, other records] <ere is another Benjamin Clark in Clermont County, in Miami Twp, in 1820, Benjamin Clark's Garland wives, and minister, were from Miami Township where there is some bottom land capable of raising 11 foot corn-unlike Bantam,Oh's land.-hb fagley] but he does not show in county earlier. Matthew and Margaret {SHELDON} HAYWARD/HAYWOOD came from New Brunswick, Canada to Belmont Co., OH, in the early 1820s. By 1834 they had moved to Edenton, Clermont Co., OH, apparently to be with Margarets SHELDON family, who had come from Nova Scotia to nearby Clinton Co., OH. >From the records we have been able to put together, it appears that Matthew and Margaret had at least five daughters and two sons, all but the first born in Ohio. We think that most of those listed below were included in this family, but have little proof on any of them. Hi to everyone researching Clermont... I'm compiling a book on the HICKS family of Clermont... putting together the work of a distant cousin who'd been collecting information for more than 30 years; I'll be glad to share what I have. The Hicks settled in Clermont before 1806. I'd love to find some cousins to fill in some gaps...do any of these names belong to you? Joshua HICKS m. Diana Adams in Rowan Co, NC 1794. Children: 1. Hi Everyone ,Ive been researching my family the Creagers, found all on the 1850 census Jacob, Eve and eight children . They came from New Jersey but do not know from where. Would like any help in finding their parents, or brothers and sisters. He was born in 1807 and they married in 1828 in Clermont Co. They died there but have only found one daughter Lucinda buried with her parents and her husband Jacob Philhower. Also curious to know if William Creager and Catherine Nitzer also on 1850 census could be related poss Jacobs brother or father. William died in 1850 and Catherine prob in 1853? they had sixteen children but only have names of Sarah Bonisa and Aaron , Would be greatful for any help. Thanks in advance Linda Creager Stephenson
