    3. Dear Hermon, Thank you for your stories, even tho I'm not familiar with or searching that part of Clermont County. Can you tell any stories about Miami or Goshen Townships? My ancestors there were Wainright and Leever, and we're transcribing a daily 1853 - 1855 diary of Mary Leever Wainright. The every-name index will include several hundred of their friends and neighbors mentioned in the diary. Rod Nordberg rodnordberg@worldnet.att.net

    3. I have been unable to locate a burial site for Samuel Walraven, b. abt 1771, though I feel sure he died in Clermont. His wife Sally Sargent, b. Mar. 11 1780, d. Apr 6, 1842 may be buried in Wood Cemetery. I am trying very hard to break through the Walraven "brick wall" and discover the names of Samuel's parents. He may have been b. in Delaware. Sally & her family came to Clermont from Maryland, via Kentucky, and one genealogy (posted on worldconnect) gives their marriage place as Maryland, which indicates that they were married before the move. Any help greatly appreciated. Virginia. --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free. Checked by AVG anti-virus system (http://www.grisoft.com). 3. At dawn,as my dog was near a Tunnel Mill millstone in my yard, it struck me to wrife of it's wood, and frame still exsisting,in a different form, just north of Williamsburg and new Rt 32. The 1st old barn,on the east side of Rt 133,north of new Rt 32, was built by James Allen Ashton, from the lumber he got from tearing down Tunnel Mill. Indeed, the mills macheniry if,metal, have sunk in the ground just north of the barn. 1910 era. He had bought the farm just south of the 1826 era farm of William Johnson Ashton, and built a house, and this barn. I've seen it in the past month. Most of his other buildings are gone, but the barn stands. My Dad loved to fish the creek at Tunnel Mill-now very upper Lake Harsha,East Fork State Park. The creek made a 3 mile loop around the hill where the mill's tunnel carried water. He could park his car,and fish down the creek 3 miles, and end up back at his car. Expect even more typing errors from me,due to a kitten playing on this desk. And sleeping with me as my 'Teddy Bear" at night. Tunnel mill is pictureed,I'm sure,in Bob Slades additions to the 1970's reprint version of Theiry and Mitchell's history. I used to swim there as my Dad fished, for a dam had been built for summer cabins.

    3. I'm just passing this on as asked to do. ----- Original Message ----- Sent: Friday, November 10, 2000 2:00 PM FW: please pass around! Please read this and participate. We cannot allow Gore to undermine the democratic electoral process of the U.S.! United Republican Fund of Illinois Chicago November 9, 2000 From: Joseph A. Morris, President To: URF Leaders and Friends Herewith is some practical advice on action that every citizen can take in the event that the Florida recount confirms the election of George Bush, but Al Gore fails to concede. We all know what is going on in Florida, and that the election hinges on the outcome. I am writing you today to prepare us all for what we will have to do if what I think is going to happen actually does. The recount, which will be finished by 5 p.m. Thursday, will likely show Bush to be the winner once again, with only a few thousand overseas ballots to be counted. Those ballots will be overwhelmingly for Bush, a minimum of 60% and probably closer to 75%. If the count goes our way tomorrow, we have won this election. This is when something critical happens. Either Gore bows out gracefully or he doesn't, and I can almost guarantee he won't. These are people wedded to power who will only go down kicking and screaming. They will use every legal maneuver in the book to steal the election. (In 1960, when Richard Nixon had every right and reason to challenge the election results he didn't for the sake of the country. Expect no such noble behavior this time.) What will they try? One bet is to find a friendly judge to throw out the Florida results on a flimsy premise. They are already floating this as a trial balloon in the form of the allegedly "confusing" ballots in Palm Beach County. I have seen the ballots - they are not confusing in the least. Indeed, they are identical in form to the punch-card ballots used in Chicago and Cook County, Illinois, in this very election. What is more, it is just as likely that Palm Beach County voters who wanted to vote for Bush inadvertently voted for Nader. All parties approved the form of ballot before the election. The form-of-ballot issue is a mere pretext for an effort a judicial invalidation of the Florida election. While I hope this scenario doesn't come to pass, I fear that it will, and it will only have disastrous results for the country. The election fight could drag on for months and actually be decided by a court! If this comes to pass the vision of our Founders and the blood of patriots will have been betrayed. Personally, I am not going to stand for this, and I hope you won't either. The good news is that we are not without voice. HERE IS WHAT [CAN] BE DONE: if the vote count affirms Bush's election, we allow a short grace period to see the reaction of the Gore camp. If they have not graciously conceded after a few hours, we must bombard the news media and our public officials AT EVERY LEVEL with phone calls of outrage that demand Gore's concession. I mean literally millions of phone calls. We must jam their phone banks with calls. There are millions of us so it shouldn't be too difficult. (While you're at it, send e-mails to your local newspapers as well.) If it becomes widely reported - and it will - that there is a groundswell demanding that Gore back down and not embarrass the country, it will be very difficult for Gore to withstand the pressure. He will have to relent. Here are some places to start: The White House: telephone (202) 456-4114 FAX:(202)456-2461 e-mail president@whitehouse.gov The Vice President's Office: telephone:(202) 274-5000 FAX:(202) 456-2883 e-mail vice.president@whitehouse.gov Vice President's Senate Office: telephone: (202) 224-2424 Senator Tom Daschle (Senate Democratic Leader): (202) 224-2321 Also: (202) 224-5556 Representative Dick Gephardt (House Democratic Leader): (202) 225-2671 Also: (202) 225--0100 Also, be sure to call your congressmen and both your senators. All these numbers are easily located on voter.com. You can also contact them through the U.S. Capitol Switchboard: U.S. Capitol Switchboard (all Senators and Representatives): (202) 224-3121 Another office to call is that of Chicago's Mayor Richard M. Daley (the brother of Gore's campaign manager, Bill Daley): Telephone: (312) 744-3300 FAX: (312) 744-2324 If you've never made a call like this, there's no reason to be shy. They get opinion calls all the time and are set up to take them. In fact they like calls. It helps them tell which way the wind is blowing. Some media contacts: Boston Globe (617) 929-2000 Matthew V. 3. Hi List, I just subscribed and thought I would attempt my first message. I am trying to find information on my wife's gr-gr-grandparents, John Henry Jackson and Pauline Raper. I have just received information which was written down by their daughter-in-law many years ago which says that John Henry was born around 1845 in New Richmond, OH and Pauline Raper was born 9/30/1848 in Batvia, OH. I am attempting to locate their parents names and/or anything else about them. They both moved to Washington, DC when they were very young and married here in 1871. I'm not sure whether they met here or met in Ohio and moved here together. Thanx for any pointers. Harry Rudd Bowie, MD

And,faintly, her brother, uncle Orin Vandement. Bob Davidson and I had need for the 1922 "Bethel Journal's " to plan the 1972 US GRANT 150'S, but the newspaper files did not go back that far. "Go see Miss Ethel" we were told, and she told us "Come back in a few days-Orin always saved the papers in the attic. " And she had them. Was Vandement the Vanneman of Swedish sw NJ like my Justice? 1. Exercising your right to vote in the "old days"
    2. My former husband always loved to tell this story about his two great uncles (or maybe they were great-great uncles) in Iowa back in the days of horse and wagons. It seems these two brothers farmed next to each other and usually did things together to sort of help each other out. They weren't in the habit of voting because they had to go so far to the polls to vote, but one year when the presidential election came up they decided to go vote. They had to hitch up the horses to the wagon early in the morning before the sun was barely up, their wives fixed them a lunch basket to take, and off they went. They knew they were giving up a day of work on the farms that would have to be made up by putting in even longer days. It was a long, slow trip to the town where the polls were located and it took all morning for them to get there. They voted, ate their lunches that the wives had packed, and headed back home. It was almost evening when they arrived back at their farms, and one brother turned to the other and said, "I know that it's supposed to be a secret ballot and no one is supposed to know how you voted, but we're brothers so I don't think it would hurt if we tell each other how we voted." They did. And guess what. One voted for the Republican candidate and the other voted for the Democratic candidate! True story. Susan
