    3. I've been reading the very interesting posts to this forum, but this is my first post for help. I'm looking for parents or siblings of Samuel J. GRIFFITH (b 27 August 1826 in Hamilton County, OH, died 3 October 1871 in Clermont County). He married Elizabeth MYERS in 1853. During the Civil War he enlisted in 79th Ohio Infantry Volunteers. He was a carpenter and its rumored his family came from Wales. I have all kinds of records on this man, including his military and pension files, but I cannot find any mention of parents or siblings anywhere. I'm hoping someone out there can help me or give me an idea where else to look. Thanks! Ann Craig SURNAMES IN CLERMONT COUNTY: CRAIG, GRIFFITH, HOMAN, DAY, MYERS

    3. Carol: It's probably a good bet that your Elizabeth Gray was a descendant (perhaps granddaughter) of Archibald Gray who settled in Clermont County early on. Archibald had 11 children by my count, 7 sons (John, Hiram, Henry, Vincent, James H, Aaron and Andrew) and 4 daughters (Mary, Elizabeth, Rachel and ?). I am no expert on the Gray genealogy, but am interested in this family because of their close association with the Beckelhymer (aka Behymer) family that I have been researching for several years (see my web page at: http://members.home.net/johntippet/). Archibald was born circa 1757 in PA. He had a daughter named Elizabeth, but she married Aaron Parker in 1819, so she would have been likely one generation earlier than your Elizabeth who married in 1831. You need to determine which of the seven sons of Archibald may have been Elizabeth's father. Andrew had a daughter, Elizabeth, but she was born in 1824. John, Henry and Vincent moved west early on per Everts 1880 history of Clermont County, OH, so I don't think they would have been your Elizabeth's father (BTW: John Gray moved to Fulton County, IL in the 1830s - I suspose Henry and/or Vincent may have joined him). That leaves Hiram, James H and Aaron as possibilities. I have done no research on them so can offer no assistance there. Hope this helps... 3. Carol: about the 3 other Gray brother possibilitys that John mentioned in his email (sons of Archibald Gray): Hiram married Nancy French. They had a son Wilson Thompson Gray who married Malinda Beckelheymer. James H. Gray married a Lucy and they had a son Eldridge Gray. Aaron Gray I have no information about. Also, in my files, I'm watching and wondering if this Peter Gray from Clermont Co isn't also a son of Archibald. I have no information on him accept that he died in Batavia, Clermont Co in 1812. 1. Clermont County Schools
    2. Hello, Mr Fagley's posting, earlier today, gives rise to my question. Do school records exist for Clermont County Schools and particularly New Richmond Schools for the 1860's? I believe that S Conrad Trauth may have taught school in the German language in the Clermont area 1866 and earlier. I just came to this conclusion and would like to know if there is any documentation that might support or deny my idea. Thanks for your help. --Jack Trauth

    1. Early schools of Clermont and Brown photo's
    2. HERMON B FAGLEY
    3. Dad's 102nd seems a fitting days to talk schools. Bob Slade,of Batavia,Asst Supt of Clermont Co Schools ,was one of us Local history nuts, being most active in the 1960's an 1970'. Schools were of particular interest to Bob,and likely he published a book,or booklet. What Bob,did, for sure, was have his collectors of old pictures, like my mother, scattered around the county, and Bob made his rounds, gathering those old photo's, and then publishing them in either\or[?] Batavia's 'Clermont Sun" and "Clermont Courier" newspaper. And,microfilms of those papers should be [are?] in the Doris Wood Public Library,Batavia. Often,it was a photo of a 1 room school, and it's students on the front step, and, often, they are ,largly, named. Also,in the 1970 era,John Armleader's branch of the 'Clermont Co Historical Soc' [sic] republished Theiry and Mitchell's [1891?] History-Atlas of Clermont, and Bob Slade nearly doubled the original's size with old pictures. Again, 1 room schools, often with students named. We have had other collectors of old photos, and publishers of same. Richard Disney, Mr Smiley, our own John Emmitt, O.H.Sharp, to name a few. It took 20-30 years of settlement before Ohio had a public school law, locating 1 room schools within a couple mils of everyone. And the villages had larger schools, and ,long term, Parker's Academy, and Augusta Ky college. My great grandfather,John F.M.Ely took a business course at Farmer's College,Cllege Hill, nw Cincinnati, and Lebanon,Oh had a Normal school. Ely's NEW RICHMOND store went bankrupt in the Panic if 1873, and he hd a break-down. My grandmother, then thru the 8th grade at New Richmonf, became the family supporter at that age, teaching at Anti-Bantam brick 1 room school [Bill Plank's] . Ely Hill just told me Bethel schools became consolidated in 1936 [8?] and his dad moved from Bantam 2 room,to Bethel, where his name livs yet on EBEN C HILL Elementary. Maybe Markie Dunn has a story how the Dunn brothers got from Nicholsville to Bethel High. Larry Jegley's Mom,Janie, lived to remote to commute, and so she lived with Dr Wm Eberly Thompson to go to high school. My mother was so lucky as to have an electric RR [STREETCAR and baggage ca] pa st her door. My dad.commuting to Williamsburg schools to teach, picked up high school students en route, like George Musgrove and Rodney Davis' mom. So,you could walk to the 1 room school, but getting to higher grades was a problem. 1870 CENSUS OF Brown Co shows my wife's Kirkpatrick's farmig south of the Germanic Arnheim, but it also shows a 2nd household,of their children, headed by a late teens daughter, living in Georgetown-surely for schooling. Carl Thompson's 1970 era historyon Brown Co includes the 1830 school census of several, but not all Brown Co townships. Census gives the adult's name, and no. of children betewwn 5-16 including zero. There was 1 1 room school n e of Williamsburg, where almost all the students were Waits. Anyway, there are, today, online OHCLERMO-L and OHBROWN-L those that started out in 1 room schools, pre school buses. ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! 3. Nancy: I have been going through the Common Pleas Chancercy Records of Clermont County, OH. In Vol 1 (1824 - 1835) there is a dispute between John G Scott and wife and Andrew Gray and wife Vs Samuel Beckelshymer and son, John Beckelshymer. There is also information regarding 3 or 4 of the Logan family in this dispute. I have been researching the Beckelhymer (aka Behymer) family for many years. If you are interested in seeing what I have compiled on this family, point your browser to: http://members.home.net/johntippet/ The Behymers and Grays were closely allied families. John Gray, I think a brother to your Andrew Gray, married Esther France. Esther had previously been married to Levi Beckelhymer. John Gray migrated to Fulton County, IL circa 1840 where several other Beckelshymers and Frances had migrated. He and his wife both died circa 1850 in Fulton County, IL. Andrew Gray's children by his first wife, Elizabeth Logan (or Martha Logan ?) are listed in the dispute mentioned above. It is quite interesting reading. If you don't mind large files (5 pages each of upwards of 1 MByte or so) I could scan them and E-mail them to you. FYI: I also just discovered this related web site: http://members.aol.com/janau/gray.htm I would be interested in knowing what you may have on the children or ancestors of Andrew. 3. Now i will try to tell a short story not as long or as "neat" as Hermon's. I have always been interested in where my father came from and like many, if i had enough sense i would have ask. Started in about the late 50s to find the family. My husband died in 1979, so i quit and tried to put my life back together, did some research but not alot. Put the books and many papers away. A couple of years ago my son insisted i get this "beast" and put the family history on it. (In fact he built it for me( As everyone, that has lost someone, knows you forget a lot of the little things. A man on the OHROOTS ask about a Matteson, which is my husband's Grandmother's name. SOOOOOO!! i went out to the garage and started digging and found, "Historical Collections of Brown County, Ohio" by Carl N. Thompson. I had forgotten i even had it. NOW, because i know how hard it is to search, it is indexed so anyone who wants me to look for their family i will try my best. Don't all yell at once :-). June

    3. 1st, the old religions of the east, in their original form, were not in the ABC counties. And it required an educated in England clegy that mostly went back to England in the Rev War,1775-83.In large part, they were replaced by the slightly schooled Methodist Episcopal circut-riders. The Quaker religion o the East didn't have an educated clergy, but it mostly was not in the Ohio River counties of Ohio-Cincinnati and ? excepted. Hillsboro,Blanchester, Lebanon north past Dayton Ohio to the Richmond, Ind aea. The Quakers support Wilmington College,of Oh, and Earlham College of Ind New Netherlands was Reformed Dutch, and an educated clergy, and we had none. New England's Pilgrams and Puritans became a Congregational and Unitarian churces. Rev Fred Fagley,in his "History of Congregationalism " said a business relatioship with the Presbyterians. They split the cost of missionaries, with any new churches to be Presbyterian. Which had an educated clergy. And,which, from eastern Clermont, across s Brown, to Adams Co ,Oh was often dominent. Today, the Church of Christ,or Christian church may be dominent. "New Lights" Rev Mathew Gardner had much to do with it's spread. But, who kept it going before Gardner was adult. Rev John Dunlevy 1801-06. But after him,and before Gardner? Md's Catholic church spread to Bardstown,Nelson Co,Ky.Bishop Purcell spred his church east from Cincinnati to St Martins, with oter steps.
