HI GROUP, JUST FOUND OUT THAT ANCESTORS JOHN B. WORTHINGTON AND SARAH HALFHILL WERE MARRIED IN CLERMONT COUNTY, OHIO, NOT SURE OF THE DATE. HAS ANYONE HEARD OF EITHER OF THESE FAMILIES?? MARILYNN
Bob had cancer, and he had Parkinson's. Maybe rootsweb.com isn't the proper place to announce his death, but so many of us grew up with Bob Braun on the Ruth Lyons TV show, and then on his own show, that nobody in Greater Cincinnati was better know. And,when Bob's show's was replaced by Sarah Jessie's talk show, Bob spent another several years in the business at L.A.,till the Northridge earthquake. Bob's son has been anchor man on our Cincinnati TV news years, and Bob was drive time am radio on WSAI til cancer made it impossible. 1st time I ever saw Bob Braun was in swin trunks,at the big swimming pool at Coney Island, with microphone in hand, interviewing kids [pretty girls] for his om radio show. So handsome, and well built. So,I'm guessing his age at late 60's. That's Bob 'with microphone in hand!" Nobody could give commercials more naturally, and without teleprompter's. Day after day: year after year, Bob filled Cincinnati's TV noon hours. With Ruth Lyons, and then alone. I'm glad I don't have memories of him wasted by cancer, and shaking with Parkinson's. . There was always something not quite 100% natural about Bob,on TV. Then he told us all just what it was. He had what's called a "Lazy upper lip" that did not move ,so his upper teeth were never seen. Good bye.Bob. Thanks for a million memories!
If any of you drive east on RT 125 from the RT 222 South traffic light about a mile, you will come to the metal towers on a high power line carrying electricy from the power plant,on the Ohio east of New Richmond, to the Uranium plant in Pike Co,Oh. My hikes are carrying me under this power line all the time. Nobody wanted it to cross their farms. 1950-52 era. Our next door neighbor was farmer, but mostly lawyer, Robert Justice Harris, and the plans put the tall metal towers on his land. Three times, where a tower was planned on his farm,he established a 'paper" cemetary. And,three ties the power company moved their towers slightly. As I hike, I note the 3 towers out of line with the main power line, and chuckle at the giant game of checkers once played there. I don't know how many churchyards started out as family cemetaries, but several Calvery west of RT 743,on 756's old section was 1st the Alexander Buchanan family cemetary with several burials before it became a church yard in 1816. The church may have buried on my Rev George Brown's cemetary, w RT 743,and n Indian creek til then. Maybe. The church once called by Alexander Thompson, and now called Mt Holly Christian , had Murdock's and kin before that. S side RT 125 EAST OF Rt 132 nORTH. Could be the widow Chandler buried her husband at Old Bethel before Rev John Collins buried a son in 1807. The pioneer churchyard of n Main,Bethel was the Denham's,and kin,but they were also, mostly the Baptist church. I'll guess Mt Moriah started as the Witham extended family Baptist ceetary. Gatch's became Milford's. Almost all those early churches were built on land beside a little run of water. Smyrna,Hopewell,Calvery,Old Bethel,Bethel,Clover,Mt Moriah, etc. Maybe there was [is?] a spring nearby. Certainly Witham's Big Spring was at Mt Moriah., People and horses needed some water. Camp meeting grounds needed water. I've always thought the lone well at the RT 743-756 intersection might have been dug for Gregg';s camp grounds. . [Where was the water for the great Cane Ridge camp meeting on 1801 8 miles n e of Paris,Ky.

I was wondering if anyone could help me with a Charlie Sweet? My mother-in-law Altha Carter Blair, had a cousin named Charlie Sweet who came from Cincinnati to see his grandma. Not sure who grandma was bit she was the daughter of George (Wash) Carter & Alice Dell Kirgan. Altha was born in Williamsburg, Clermont County, Ohio June 14, 1892. I have photos of them together & the look to be about the same age. I have not been able to find the name of Sweet in this line...anyone have an idea? Thanks, Eileen Blair

Fellow researchers: Please be advised that I have just posted an update to my web page. Point your browsers to http://members.home.net/johntippet/ and click on Beckelhymer and then Behymer Tax Records. Changes with this update are the following: (1) I have added a transcription of the 1786 to 1803 Personal Property Tax Lists for Franklin County, VA for Beckelhymer/Picklesimer and allied family names. These include Archer, Dillman, Fishburn, Harger, Kinsey, Landis, Lazena, Lemon, Logan, Phares, Prator, Rinker, Trout, and Waggoner. I have proof read these and I think the information there is accurate. There are still some of the allied names, however, that are missing. I have to go through the list one more time before I can be sure. I will post an update in the near future. (2) I have added a transcription of the 1816 to 1824 Duplicate Tax Records for Clermont County, OH for Beckelhymer and allied family names. These include Archer, Custer, Fitzpatrick, France, Gray, Kinsey, Littleton, Logan, Lower, McCord, Mattox, Parvin, Robb and Shultz. At this time, most of the allied family names are only included for the years 1816 through 1817 or 1818 (however, Kinsey and Lower are complete). I will be adding the allied family names for the remaining years in a future update. Enjoy! John Charles Tippet johntippet@home.com
I'm weeping already. Amanda,of Savil,of Rev Jesse Justuce lived where I type. Our treasures include her diary, and autograph book [signed by 2 sisters of Pres Grant. 2 tombstones,as close as any to Old Bethel Methodist -mother church of the Jersey settlement in mid Clermont Coi,Oh. 1805,her grandfather sold farms n Swedesboro,NJ to come to this Bethel,Oh farm. 1815,her others,James and Ruhama Blackman came from nw of Atlantic City. 1818 her grandfather Blackman built the present Old Bethel church on his sister Sarah Blackman collins farm 1803,Sarah and Rev John Collins, and colony came. She had lost brothers to the sea, and didn't want to loose sons also. 1807 is the nearby tombstone showing she failed. Her son, buried by the original log church on Corker's Run 1824,Savil Justice married Ruhama,a 16 year old Blackman twin and I can see the site of their 1st log cabin, and the depression where they dug clay, for brick, for their 2nd house-in my yard. Both were old enough to remebember the long trip from s NJ,VIA LAND,AND RIVER,TO e Cincinnati. 1827,their 2nd,Amanda was born, and she kept a diary from her late teens til her early, and sudden death. My daily hikes east are almost to the cabin of a young couple she went to nurse thru the cholera. But,she came home, and quickly died, and the wedding dress she had made to marry Edward Wilshire Salt was her burial clothing. Jan 9th,I stood between the tombstones [2] of Amanda and her parents and siblings, and the adjoining one of E.W.Salt, and her sister,Ann C,who married him. Amanda's 14 year old brother, Lewis V Justice died slowly,in 1847, and his grandmother, raised Elizabeth Wilson,on Woodbury Creek,NJ took to her own bed then, and died the next day. Amanda's diary starts out with the teen age Amanda, and friends, making house calls to cheer up old Silas Williams,a mile north. And then comes a wedding of Williams nephew,John to Nacky Smith, at Old Bethel, and not thru the last 90% of the diary did old Silas Williams get another visit. Young John had been the real object.of her calls. Maybe,I'd better post data I remember hearing here- Silas Williams had come as a young farm hand, from N WALES,SE Pa with the John Simpson's. And made a trip back near Bucks Co,Pa to bring his desc sister's little boy,John Williams,to live with him. Welsh. The teen age Amanda Justice had her grandfather,James Blackman, and Justice and Latta uncle's in downtown Cincinnati that she often visited. He father hauld many loads of hay,and on of cherries,to Cincinnati, from ' this farm. James was Methodist class leader for Wesley Chapel, downtown on e 5th,where P+G's towers now are. And his brother,Rev Learner Blackman's tombstone was found under that church. Lot of little boys in the Jersey settlement namd for the eccentric traveling minister,Lorenzo Dow,or for Rev Learner Blackman, who drowned at the Cincinnati river ferry in 1815. I'VE LONG GUESSED Lardner Clark was his grandfather, and namesake,on the Little Egg Harbor River,of NJ. dUSK,TIME FOR 1 LAST HIKE.
In the book "Boone Co., Indiana History" published 1984, page 418, a biographical sketch of the Norman & Thelma Sloan family, makes mention of the following: "...his second great grandfather, William Slone/Sloan, came from Clermont Co., Ohio to Marion Co., IN in the 1830's. Kids of Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown-will written 1814 RT 743 and Indian Creek,Washington Twnsp,Clermont Co,Oh .Do I know them- no. Capt-Lt-JP-Rev George Brown's does not mention all his children. "Or" it does not mention all the Brown's in his near neighborhood. And the waters got muddied 1-2 years ago when we met akabrat830@earthlinknet, and by some data from the joint EMAIL group, MCQUEEN-L@rootsweb.com . I can prove a no of Brown's the age of his children nearby . The problem is that Henry Brown lived nearby a few years, and his childen [child] are the right age,and likely 1st cousins . And that Henry Brown's son Washington Brown m a McQueen also. I'm much more sure Capt-Lt-Rev-JP George Brown,d 1814 was raised in the Hampstead-Westminster,Md area. And have many more hints that he was son of John Brown m Ruth [?] mCQueen, and grandson of George and Mary Stevenson Brown[e],whose land adjoind,n e Westminster ,Md Dugal and Grace McQueen's, from 1743. John Brown's dau ,Mary, was in MADISON CO,KY m to Edward Logsdon,Jr, her cousin. I think Henry, above,is John's son, also. U. S. Grant. In the fall of 1818, John Simpson moved from Montgomery Co., PA, and settled on the Page place(which he had purchased the year before), moving into a brick house, part of which was erected in 1807 and fully completed in 1811, and which yet stands in good condition.[old brick burned, with multiple loss of life abt 1900. Fine modern home on it's site] Mr. Simpson was a man of intelligence, and bore an excellent reputation among his neighbors. He died Jan. 20, 1837 in his seventieth year. His family consisted of Mary, who married James Griffith, Jan. 29, 1813, in Pennsylvania, and moved to Bethel in 1817, where he carried on his trade, blacksmithing, until his death. He was the father of John S., William L., R.McK., O.P., L W., and A.R. Griffith, and of daughters who married George B. Johnson and T. Q. Ashburn of Batavia. The second daughter of John Simpson, Hannah, married Jesse R. Grant, June 24, 1821, at the Simpson Homestead in Tate[township], the Rev. Moses Edwards, a Baptist minister, performing the ceremony. [HB Fagley daily walking to corner of farm] The fruits of this union were Pres-gen Hiram Ulyses (later called Ulyses Simpson GRANT ), born April 27, 1822, Samuel Simpson, Orville L., Rachel C. (died single), Virginia Payne (Mrs. A.L. Corbin), and Mary Frances (Mrs. M.J. Cramer). Jesse R. Grant died at Covington Ky., but Mrs. Grant still lives with her daughter, Mrs. Corbin, at Jersey City, N.J. The fourth daughter of John Simpson, Ann, married James Ross, also a Pensylvanian, who came to Clermont County in 1818, and who lived at Bethel until his death in 1849. Their children were Helen, Orlando H., and Marcellus. The former married W.T. Burke (now of Portsmouth, Ohio), and at the breaking of the war, in 1861, U.S. Grant, Orland H. Ross, and W.T. Burke were all serving as clerks in Grant and Co.'s leather-store, at Galena, Ill.; and Ross, after holding many positions in the Army, was assigned to a position in the Treasury Department, which he still holds. The only son of John Simpson is Samuel Simpson, who married Elizabeth Griffith, and yet lives near Bantam, in Tate [Township] nearly eighty four years of age. He reared two sons, Capt Robert B., living in Cincinnati,[who was HB Fagley's great uncle] and John, a captain in the United States army, in New York. Of his five daughters, Harriet E. is single; the others married William Elrod, George S. Gatch, Benj. Winans, and Walter E, Burroughs. Perhaps I should explain my interest in all this. All of my mother's family were in Clermont County from very early until recently. This makes Hermon Fagley a very distant cousin, through the Browns. Mother had told me we had some connection to Gen. Grant; my aunt and cousin didn't know exactly what. When I went looking, I found that Mary Ellen Griffith, the daughter of James Griffith and Mary Simpson, was the first cousin of Gen. Grant. She was also the second wife of Judge T.Q. Ashburn, who was my grandmother's uncle. So you see, I really can't claim any relationship. It is still interesting, though. Hope this is of a little help. I'm looking for more info on my grandfather, Alfred H. CRAIG (1880-1972) married to Minnie GRIFFITH (1889-1985). He was the son of Alfred A. CRAIG (1850-1887) and Patience Isabella DAY (1851-1884). After his mother died when he was very young, his father remarried and he went to live with an uncle. His uncle was known as "Doc Day" (maybe a vet or doctor?). His cousins' names were Clint and Clarence. I'm trying to find out who this uncle was, and I've narrowed down the possibilities to Patience's brothers, who were John, Percival, Daniel and Joseph. I would appreciate any information anyone may have on these families. Thanks, Ann
Virginia, The Ohio Historical Society has some newspapers from Clermont County at this site: http://www.ohiohistory.org/resource/database/newsfilm/c.txt My forebears were involved in several journalism ventures in Clermont County in the late 1820's. From the Joseph HERRON bio: "When New Richmond became the county-seat, the sons established a weekly county paper, called it the Luminary and placed at its head the motto - Enlightened minds and virtuous manners lead to the gates of glory. They also published a monthly magazine - The Columbian Historian - one of the earliest of its kind. Joseph, having gone as far in his studies as his teachers could lead him, was prevailed upon to take charge of a county school in the Franklin neighborhood. Here the youthful teacher succeeded in inspiring his boys and girls with a love for learning, taught them to declaim and organized a debating society in which not only the farmers sons but the farmers themselves came to listen and to discuss the questions of the day, and Franklin School House became the center of an intelligent community which has remained such to an unusual degree. On Saturdays Mr. HERRON set type in his brothers office for the magazine, committing to memory every article he arranged." I believe that they were also involved with the Ohio Star. Karen, Withamsville is not a separate town but rather an area. So far as I know it was never an incorporated village. Currently we nearby locals recognize it as extending along Ohio rt125, known as Ohio Pike, from I-275 on the west to a little east of Glen Este-Withamsville Rd. Mt Moriah Cemetery is an active cemetery with offices at 686 Mt. Moriah Dr. Withamsville (P.O. would be Cincinnati OH 45445). Phone is 513-752-1773. Most likely you will get an answering machine. Hi Hermon, You seem to know a lot about the history and people of the old Brown & Clermont Co's. I just wonder if you have ever heard of "Sarah Ann Logan"? She married Joseph Keethler/Keithler 16 Sept 1840. She was born in Va 1767. Was Logan her maiden name? or was she married before she married Joseph and Logan was her married name. Sarah was 12 - 13 years older than Joseph and he was 60 when they were married. Sarah died in Scott Twp in Sept 1874 at the age of 109 yrs and 6 mos. What family was she living with at the time of her death? If you don't know the answers to any of this, maybe some one on the list will. I hope you can give me some help on this. I don't know who her parents were or just when she came to Brown Co. I havn't been able to find where Joseph or his first wife Betsy Holton are buried either. There was a Keethler Cemetery in Mt Orab, not far from the Mt Orab Cemetery, but it is probably not there any more. My guess is they were buried there. Thanks for any help you may give me. Rita (Keethler) Ingersoll
I have read in some articles of a piece of Brown County E. of Felicity was at one time Clermont County. Why the change and what is the location of this area? Raised in Clermont recently moved to Brown. Believe this could be part of the territory but not sure. Also there is a very old cemetery at the bottom of Buckey RD. Just pass Utopia, Ohio. Can anyone tell me the name of the cemetery. I do know that Shinkle's were early settlers there but this looks to be more of a family plot. Haven't got to investigate yet due to dog located next to it. The cemetery seems to be un kept. Any info would be great! Hermon, calling on you again. smile. Do love this group. ============================== Join the RootsWeb WorldConnect Project: Linking the world, one GEDCOM at a time. http://worldconnect.rootsweb.com
Today,my w Bethel,Ohio hike took me where I was in the northern part of the farm where Jesse Root Grant m Hannah Simpson in 1821. I could see,in the distance, the site where the old brick Thomas Page had sold John Simpson,Jr had been located. Thomas Page then started a tannery at Pt Pleasant,Oh,on the Ohio, where, 1822,Hannah Simpson Grant and Jesse Root Grant had the future Prs- Gen US GRANT. Said house burned with multiple loss of life,1900 era. Ohio Rt 125,then s Sugartree Rd,3\4 mile. I have a picture of the house, someplace 3 days ago,I saw the Simpson tombstones in Old Bethel churchyard,a mile north of Bantam,Oh in East Fork State Park. Thomas Page had 400 acres from 1805. He built the neighborhood's 1st,or 2nd brick and sold the whole to the John Simpson's [Jr] in 1817 era. I know the site of a 2nd ,very old ,cabin and well on the property. Simpson had a Griffith son-in-law with him,and another dau m [James?] Ross. Neshamminy Presbyterian, in s e Bucks Co,Pa had been a church of Simpson,Jr. John Simpson,Sr had attended one near Harrisburg,Pa ministered by Rev Elder. Terr Gov Samuel Medary wrote of attending elementary school with Hannah Simpson Grant,in s e Pa .My memory is that it was a Quaker school, though both Medarry and Simpson had Nesamminy Presbyterian ties. But they lived in the Gwynedd-North Wales ,Pa colony across the county line south. 1698, Gwynedd,North Wales was settled, and many of the Welsh became quaker. Medary had a Welsh Harris mother.John Simpson,Jr had a Welsh Roberts tie, plus the Griffith's were Welsh- 2 Simpson siblings m 2 Griffith's. Prof and US GRANT expert John Simon tells me of Hannah Simpson Grant being so quiet. I think she was educated as a Quaker-for sure, she was raised amid nw Philadelphia suburbs Quakers. Ks-Mn Territory Gov Samuel Medary wrote of attending Quaker school with Hannah. A power in Ohio State politics, and a Columbus,Ohio newspapermam, this childhood friend of Hannah's was jailed in the war by Gen Grant for his Peace Democrat newspaper writings. 1825,Sam Medary had stopped his migration west at Bethel,Ohio because of the Simpson's. I'm from his sister,Mary Medary Iden, who stopped at Bethel,in 1834,after gettig a Quaker certificate of removal from n Wash DC in Md Quakers. Hannah Grant's nephew m a Fagley Hannah Grant's bro-in-law,Oliver Grant m a Medary, with a Bucks Co Quaker mom. But,the Simpson farm adjoins not my Dad's Fagley's, but my Mom's Justice-ELY-Brown farm. I was raised in the Bantam Presbyterian,1940's because, 1865, Samuel Simpson converted my Mom's Justice's and Ely's from the Methodist Old Bethel. But all are buried at Old Bethel.Which is not,and is 5 miles west of the Methodist church in Bethel who had Jesse Root Grant as leader. A block east of the latter was an Underground RRer Methodist. Actually ,on a corner of the 400 acres of John Simpson was a 2nd Underground RRer church. Which makes one think. The Grant's were so-so on slavery, but the Simpson's? A farm cut from the 400 acres of Page-Simpson was Underground RRer Rev Isaac Holmes Brown's. Samuel Simpson's son,Capt Robert Belville Simpson married a sister of a proven Underground RRer.,Capt Will Fagley. When a Presbyterian church became available at Nicholsville, the Simpson's attended it. And the Presbyterian's were anti-slavery. Was Samuel Simpson,or son, guilty of breaking the Federal law and helping slaves escape? JOHN SIMON? Bob Fagley, you send me a post card of Supt of Locust Corner High School Bob Fagley's students,1913. He writes his elder brother, likely Supt of Ridgeville,Ind schools saying 'This is my bunch' [of students" Bring your violin home with you Christmas,as I want to introduce you to some new girls' likely including Bob's futie wife,Nellie Kiester. Evedently,Walter forgot his violin, for he did not marry Eula Kiester. Anyway, 1970-75 at the Harry Wolf Produce firm below 2nd,on Plum,Cincinnati, Harry, and 2 other older men always mentioned my Uncle Bob Fagley, teacher at Locust Coner. Somebody posted a local news article from Locust Corner the next year of Owensville High Schools Supt of Schools,Bob Fagley, returning to Locust Corner on a visit [to see Nellie Kiester]. Mention should be made the same Bob Fagley's 2nd wife celebrated her 90th biurthday last Sunday. I've studied the post card's students faces. Any post card from any Locust Corner SCHOOL had to be 1\2 Behymer's. I've picked the 1\2 I think were Behymer's,including one I think ws East End grocer-Mt Moriah Ralph Behymer, who,I don't think was the noted genealogist, but he did buy many of our apples.
