...A portion of an article I wrote some time back is hereby shared with you. You might say they are areas in which I had problems at one time or another. Barbara Jean ~~~~~~~~~~ "Rightly or wrongly, people often judge credibility by the written presentation. To be the professional genealogist and to look the part, it is important to learn the proper spelling of important and often used words: GENEALOGY (is sometimes wrongly tried as 'geneology' and nothing shouts "I don't know what I'm doing" louder than the misspelling of this key word). Try this little test, to assist in remembering the correct spelling. The first letters of each word combine to spell GENEALOGY. ~~ Genealogists Examine Needed Evidence At Lots Of Grave Yards ~~ CEMETERY (is not with an ..ary). EMIGRATE is to leave one country, or region, to settle in another. REMEMBER...EMIGRATE begins with the letter "E" and so does the word "EXIT" as in EXITing a country. IMMIGRATE is to come to a country of which one is not a native, usually for permanent residence. REMEMBER...IMMIGRATE begins with the letter "I" and so does the word "IN" as in coming INto a country. ITS is a possessive word, but it does not take an apostrophe either within it or after it; i.e. The horse lost its shoe when running. IT'S is a contraction for IT IS, and the apostrophe in this case is reserved for IT'S; i.e. - It's a good day to go swimming. RECEIVE is likewise deceiving, and is not spelled as it sounds. Remember the little ruling verse you learned in grade school -- "Write I before E, Except after C, Or when it sounds like an A, As in neighbor and weigh." (e before i: receive, deceive, ceiling, conceit, vein, sleigh, freight, eight); (i before e: relief, believe, niece, chief, sieve, frieze, field, yield; EXCEPTIONS: seize, either, weird, height, foreign, leisure, conscience, counterfeit, forfeit, leisure, neither, science, species, sufficient. THEIR, is a pronoun (THEIR home is lovely); as opposed to THERE, being an adverb (THERE is the house). YOU'RE is a contraction ('contraction'...meaning a shortened form of a word or phrase) of YOU ARE (You're reading this now.); while the word YOUR is a pronoun (I Like YOUR idea, or ...the cemetery is on YOUR left). The proper placement of QUOTATION MARKS is another thing worthy of a mention. When making a quote saying -- Mrs. Smith told me, "The cemetery closes before dark." -- notice the final quotation marks are on the OUTSIDE of the period/punctuation. When writing, lots of people think they belong ahead of the period and, though it seems right, that is not correct. To get a better feel for proper usage, pay special attention to where those quotation marks are placed as you read a reputable newspaper or magazine."
You can possibly find current OBITUARIES on this newspaper site (if it's a big enough town). Many newspapers also have Archives for several years back. Interestingly, I was able to pull up an Obit on a family member through this Internet connection...just hours after the newspaper hit the street 100 miles from me. The old timers in the family couldn't understand how I managed to find out about all the funeral arrangements on a computer. <smug smile> http://www.newsdirectory.com/news/press/na/us/

Where Were You/They Born? According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, the first three digits of a U.S. Social Security number is a code that may indicate the state or territory in which your application stated you were born (because the code reveals the state in which you registered). For recent immigrants, the number is supposed to match up with the state or territory in which you were living when you received proper working papers. Note: The database in this document is not 100 percent complete. Populous states have added numeric ranges not contained here. Instructions: Enter the first three digits of a U.S. Social Security number in question. Click on the Search button. See the corresponding state or territory in the field. http://www.dannyg.com/javascript/ssn2/ssbirthplace.htm
U.S. Surname Distribution Enter a surname (last name) into the form on this site and you'll get a map of the United States showing the distribution of people with this surname within the 50 United States. This map is often helpful when trying to determine a starting point for genealogy projects. The source of this data is the 1850 Census, 1880 Census, 1920 Census, and 1990's phone books. Note that the Census data is a sampling of 1 in 100 names, so the 1990 data is the most accurate. http://www.hamrick.com/names/
Within the week since I posted my 'offer' (Monday to Monday), I have received 50 pieces of mail from the good genies on this site. Every one has been answered, some receiving up to 9 printable pages on their specific name/s submitted. ...To add to our growing list of UNUSUAL names being researched: Dorcas COOPER; Samuel Garrett PRATHER; Andrew MART; Tobias DOLE; VAN KOUWENHOVEN; Freelove DIBBLE; Zadock & Ezra NOBLE; Anthony CIANCIOLO; and Benjamin MALOTT. I would like to point out that while I can help you with research 'possibilities' -- it is up to each individual to dig from there. Several people have asked for additional help (i.e. how to get maiden names, where to find various documents, etc), and I simply don't have the time to answer all of those requests. Every situation can be different, with no one-line answers. Compiling a family genealogy takes a lifetime! Like they say...it is a never ending job...so don't anticipate finishing it. Whenever you run into one brick wall, plow awhile in another area. I can see that many of you have reached out for years, looking for specific ancestors; that you have posted across the Internet on Message Boards and a wide range of other genie sites. One neat gentleman wrote asking for an update on downtown Hillsboro, OH (since he hadn't been in these parts for 20 years). I had to talk to a few more old-timers to get the facts. In a couple of instances, I have been able to pair researchers together who were looking for the same surnames. Several people have responded that miscellaneous facts sent to them had given possible leads into other locations they had not before considered. Walt, I was interested in your reference to the migration pattern from Lancaster, PA to Clermont Co, OH: " We do not know that Timothy Conner, my 3rd Great Grandfather, was born in Lancaster. We only know that he was born in "PA". Our Conner family was closely associated with the Jacob Light family in Clermont Co., OH, in the early 1800s and we are only guessing that the families may have known, been associated with each other, before coming to OH. The Lights were in Lancaster, once owning the area where Churchtown, PA, is located, then Westmoreland Co. and finally Allegheny Co., before coming to OH." I am researching the HERRON family that followed this pattern. From a family biography of the John and Rebecca CLARK(E) HER(R)ON family: "It was, (I think) in 1790 that they reached Philadelphia, and went immediately to lands in Pennsylvania, previously purchased with reference to farming or to coal and iron. John Heron's portion fell in Lancaster County. Glowing accounts of the new Northwest Territory had for years been traveling eastward, and in 1816 John HERRON determined to remove thither. With his family he crossed the mountains in the great Conestoga wagons of that time, and took raft at Pittsburgh for Cincinnati. In accordance with previous arrangement with former neighbors he found his way to Clermont County, and purchased a farm near the Ohio River, where he passed the remainder of his life." While I have not been able to determine where in Lancaster County the HERRONs settled, this biography and Bible records make reference to New Richmond in Clermont County. Hey gang...another 7 of you sent requests for look-ups today (on unusual first or last names) and I just managed to get caught up! Adding to the previous list of ancestors being researched, we can add the unique names of Mahala LAYCOCK, Elijah WARD, Pauline Zerelda RAPER, Esau Daly RICE, Peter VANBRIGGLE, Solomon WHIDDEN, and Hannah LITTLE. Again, it is interesting to see how far reaching out Clermont County Site is, with people subscribing from all over the USA. I know. I am hearing from them...especially when it comes to bragging about how nice their weather is. While I read, I am throwing another log on the fire!
